Your tutorials are fantastic! Any chance you could make one on texturing damage on a car model? I've watched your videos on dented, scratched, and damaged metal, etc... but it would be nice to see how to put that all together on specific areas of a car to simulate crash damage. This would come in really handy for everyone creating cars in blender for racing sims. Thanks for the excellent work!

learned about this node when i was trying to figure out how to make iridescence. Had no idea about the pearlescent car paint or the hot metal glow effect. Now if i could figure out how o do the new star trek movies impulse engine effects. Its glowing red noisy cells and the larger masked honeycomb grid pattern that seems to be semi random.

I have a question about this: what is the difference between the fresnel node and the layer weight node?

i think layer weight is more linear, which is less realistic or smth

Sorry, but this is *NOT* "how to use the Fresnel node". Use Layer Weight/Facing instead for better and more intuitive control over its output, and you also don't have any consequences for backfacing faces where fresnel will produce Snells Window. The *purpose* of the fresnel node is to blend in glossy at (or near, in some cases) the end of a shader setup. And strictly speaking, *ONLY* that. I would suggest reading up on what the manual says about it. A much better tutorial would be how to use fresnel in a *proper* way, such as: * Describe how it works. What's the math and theory behind it. Maybe touch on complex fresnel and how it relates to metals and why "IOR tables" can be very wrong. * How to calculate substrate IORs if interface is not between air/material but material1/material2. Advanced, but maybe touch on nested dielectrics. * How to correct for backfacing faces if needed, and related to that, what Snells Window is. * How to mimic/fake the Fresnel node using Layer Weight/Facing for architectural glass purposes, glass shadow rays etc. * While at it, explain why you'd want to use Fresnel in some cases instead of faking it (total internal reflections in real solid glass etc). * How does the Fresnel node work compared to Layer Weight/Fresnel. They're not the same. * How to use Fresnel nodes to calculate a "rough fresnel" for a manual PBR setup if Principled doesn't cut it. * Touch on why you might want to use a lower IOR for fresnel for some materials compared to what the theoretical number says. Think "cavity" for this one (ref UE papers). * Only *NOW* do you add that other stuff you presented. Doing weird things like that are okay of course, but shouldn't be main focus of a "how to use".
