Blindspot mirrors are also extremely useful when parallel parking. Helps to get as close as possible to the curb so you can get into a small spot _without_ getting a curb rash on your rims.

The issue I have with mirrors is that the nature of it "mirroring" confuses me and I don't trust what I'm looking at at a glance. So you have to turn and look over your shoulder but those giant pillars are blocking your view, then you have your eyes off the front of the road.
@HowSkills6 жыл бұрын
I still often take a quick look to the side before I change lanes, but I try to make it as quick a glance as possible. Things can change very quickly in front of you, so it needs to be done as fast as you can. On the interstate, I try to keep an eye on the traffic behind me so that I know if a vehicle is approaching or if it’s clear for quite a ways. If I keep aware of what’s behind me, I feel confident passing another vehicle without looking over my shoulder. That’s about the only situation where I don’t look over my shoulder. And thick pillars sure don’t help!
@lancefarrell80077 жыл бұрын
Good video, as someone who has had delivery jobs in all classes of vehicles, I feel placement of these mirrors are very important. Like you, it should be on the inside or closest to the the truck /car. (top not bottom though)... The most important area of a side mirrors is the outer, middle to lower area. That area should be left to the clearer, more detailed & larger factory mirror, not a tiny convex mirror for wide angles blind spots. Why most people cover this with the tinier convex mirror isn't logical and totally wrong. I prefer upper inside corner, which is the least used area of the factory mirrors. Plus, this frees up the bottom area for backing up in tight parking spots & lining up the painted line if need be. Oh and I seen a comment about a person looking over his/her shoulder!.. Unless in a stopped, or very slow trying to park situation, you should never have to take your eyes off the road and turn your head to make lane changes for example. Those drivers scare the s@!% out of me. It's all about the mirrors and knowing your surroundings. A little tip when teaching your kids to drive, randomly ask them without looking, what color is the car behind them and or the other lane. They should be able to answer that at all times.
@HowSkills7 жыл бұрын
Great comment and advice, Lance. I tend to agree with you that if you're staying aware of the traffic around you and are using your mirrors like you should be, then there's no need to look over your shoulder to change lanes. That quick glance back over your shoulder can be dangerous, especially at Interstate speeds.
@psdaengr9116 жыл бұрын
Mounted high, a supplementary mirror helps cover more of the sky. Mounted low on a stock mirror it helps cover the stock mirror.

Agree! Bottom inside is best. The door mirror should take in all the road in the lane parallel to your car. The blind spot mirror shows what is beside your car for any obstacles or cyclists and parking lines. Most others say upper right.... but doesn't make sense. We don't need to see the sky! lol

Been using little cheap round convex mirrors on the bottom outside corners for a couple years, totally worth it as someone that merges at high speed and drives on an interstate every day for work. Every little bit of vision helps. And if you don't like them, you can just unstick them. They're cheap, so no great investment to try it. Get some with good tape or buy some 3M. Don't want them falling off and bouncing up to hit another car on the highway. I use 3M, never had an issue.

I was very glad to see that they are indeed adjustable. Most stick on mirrors are not very effective because they are not adjustable. These however are very good. One word of caution though. I do not recommend sticking them anywhere on the inside edge of your mirror. That is were most of the action next to your car takes place. You don't want to block your view with a blind spot mirror. Most experts recommend the outside edge of the mirror. I have mine mounted just below on the mirror housing, so as not to block any valuable flat mirror space.

I highly suggest the MaxiView adjustable blind spot mirrors sold on Amazon, made in the USA, great quality and they mount with a little ball joint, so they are fully adjustable to get the perfect angle. They almost nearly eliminate the large blind spots on my larger Dodge truck, and they make backing into tight spaces way easier. Not advertising, just sharing a product I've had good experience with. Do make sure you buy from a good seller, a couple reviews have mentioned knock offs that are poor quality. Can you do a video on how to use blind spot mirrors to judge whether it is safe to change lanes? For example, I roughly know that with regular side view mirrors, if the car behind you (on the lane you wish to turn into) is roughly in the top half of your side view mirror, then it is safe to change lanes. With blind spot view mirror installed, the side view mirror will look different. How would I then judge when it is safe to change lanes? Thanks.

Hi Stan, I commented in your other video too on our car seat which is blocking our rear view of our car... I see you have a car seat in your middle back seat, but your car seat doesn't seem to block your rear view at all. Just for everyone else's info, we have a GRaco 4ever that we just had installed in the middle rear seat of our Honda Accord and my husband is worried that the car seat is blocking the view of the rear of the car. I had trouble w/ car seat rear-facing behind passenger's seat when making U-turns (a frequent thing here in NEw Orleans!). I would asume that having a car seat in the center of the vehicle is safest. Our daughter is ready to forward face (meets the height requirement).

Did you know that you are using blind spot mirror wrongfully? Because blind spot mirrors are made to see cars on your left, not for parking or see bikes behind the trunk.
@HowSkills7 жыл бұрын
That depends on how you have your regular mirrors set. I made another video about setting your mirrors according to the SAE (Society of Automotive Engineers) recommendations, which have your mirrors showing you a view further out from the side of your vehicle than many people are used to. The SAE setup gives you a panoramic view around the sides and rear of your vehicle, eliminating many blind spots. This does leave the areas close to your vehicle out of your view unless you lean forward or look over your shoulder. This is where the blind spot mirrors come in handy to show you what's actually up close to you. The combination of the SAE mirror settings along with the blind spot mirrors gives you a very encompassing view of what's going on around your vehicle. If you do have your regular mirrors set where they're showing you the side of your vehicle, then I would arrange your blind spot mirrors so that they point out further away. But, I would recommend that you try the SAE mirror set up as shown in this video: kzbin.info/www/bejne/h3rOoJeipZ17g68 Thanks for your comment and thank you for watching.

Many people forget or don't realize they have blind spots and even more never even think about the blind spots of other vehicles on the road. I constantly see knuckleheads passing other vehicles on the right which is especially dangerous on highways and when passing larger vehicles like trucks. Tractor trailers have huge blind spots. I've seen countless KZbin videos of people passing large trucks on the right and then the truck moves right and some nasty accidents happen. THEN, people commenting on the videos always say what idiots the truck drivers are. Those people don't have a clue.

My father was a truck driver and he taught me early on about how big the blind spots are on a tractor trailer. If I'm in a position behind them where I can't see their mirrors, then they can't see me, and I need to proceed with caution. Truck drivers are normally some of the safest and best drivers on the road, and I don't think they get near the respect they deserve.
@mrfester423 жыл бұрын
@@HowSkills Quite true! Tractor trailers DO have huge blind spots... especially on their right side and the best rule of thumb is to remember that if you can't see their mirrors, they can't see you. It's also true that truck drivers ARE some of the safest and best drivers on the road and they DON'T get nearly the respect they deserve but I'll qualify that by saying the best of those are tractor trailer and other big rig truck drivers. DON'T pass trucks on the right people... especially big rigs.

I got a question, do you use the left and right mirrors more then the windshield mirror when backing up
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
To be honest, I was taught that I should turn slightly in my seat and look over my shoulder out the rear window to see where I'm going when backing. (Of course, this only works if you have a vehicle that has a rear window you can see out of.) I do check my side mirrors too, and what really helps using them with this mirror setup, is installing small blind spot mirrors and pointing them so that they show you the area close in towards the side of your vehicle. These can really help with backing and parking.

I’m taking a drivers test soon am I able to have them attached to my mirrors still ?
@HowSkills2 жыл бұрын
I probably wouldn't use them during a driving test. The add-on mirrors are illegal in many states in the US, and I wouldn't want you to get any points taken off for having them.

Hi Stan, thank you for your video does the feild of vision increase if you put it on the outside? I put mine like you on the inside.
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
I feel that where you place your blind spot mirror depends on how you have your side mirrors set. My driver’s side mirror is angled out so that it shows me more of what’s going on in the lane next to me, so I placed the blind spot mirror on the inside corner and angled it so it show me the area close to the side of my car. If you have your side mirror set so it shows you everything close to the side of your vehicle, then I would place the blind spot mirror on the outside edge of it and angle it so it shows what’s further away from the side of the vehicle. It’s a matter of personal preference, and the blind spot mirror gives you a great wide angle view wherever you place it.

The first thing I buy spot mirrors ..I drive a 60 ft bus and u have to depend on them..can’t understand why I see so many other bus drivers not on their personal car
@HowSkills6 жыл бұрын
That's a very good idea that you immediately buy blind spot mirrors. They help everyone be a safer driver. It's too bad that all the other drivers don't use them on their own vehicles.

Alternatively we can keep the side mirrors 90 degree to avoid blind spots
@HowSkills5 жыл бұрын
However you have your main mirrors set, you can fill in some gaps with blind spot mirrors. Never hurts to see a little more of what’s going on around your vehicle.!

Hello is this legal for driving test I have test next month
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
Before your test, I would call the agency that will be giving you the test and ask what their policy is. It should be allowed, but make sure it’s approved by your specific testing agency ( DMV).)

Question: Do I still need to shoulder check if I already have blind spot mirrors?
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
Yes, I still recommend that you shoulder check before making a lane change. I do, and I believe it's a good habit to develop and use. It gives you one more verification that it's safe to move into the lane.

How did you move them around in the video? Are they magnetic?
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
Before I decided where I really wanted them, I put a piece of rolled up painters tape on the back of them so I could move them around. Once you find the location that you like, then you can expose the actual adhesive on the back of the mirror and stick it where you want it on your main mirror.

Why are people putting blind spot mirrors on the left side of the main mirrors? It seems to make more sense to have them on the right side like in this video.

After you adjust it how should it look from the normal position
@HowSkills3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to see the entire side of your vehicle and quite a ways out away from your car. This gives you a good view when backing & reverse parking.

Would it be safe to remove it after sticking it on? Would it just leave some residues? Nothing goo gone can’t fix? Thanks!
@HowSkills4 жыл бұрын
Yes you can remove these fairly easily. One way is to use fishing line or dental floss and pull it back and forth behind the mirror to kind of saw it off. And Goo Gone is great for cleaning up any residue.

So your regular mirror doesn't look beside your car instead this does. Ok. I drive with my mirrors already looking beside my car so I'd spot that bike and kids toy no probs. I was thinking of using these to look out wide towards the 3-4 o'clock position and 8-9 o'clock
@HowSkills6 жыл бұрын
I have my side mirrors set so that they look out further from the side of the vehicle, which helps to do away with some blind spots when other vehicles are passing me. The blind spot mirrors then show me what’s close to the side of my vehicle and helps with backing and parking. I made another video about this using what’s called the SAE recommended mirror settings. I’m all for whatever setup gives you the most visibility of what’s going on around you when you’re behind the wheel. Thanks for watching!
@PascalSiakam136 жыл бұрын
Stan Cravens I gotta try your set up now. I put my blind spot mirror on the outside, so my car sides are visible in both mirrors, though the smaller one gives bigger angle, and its a little bit distracting, since every time I want to change lane to the left, I keep looking in the small mirror and it kind of defeats the purpose of the bigger one. Your set up makes more sense, can’t wait to test it

They do help a lot, but always remind yourself to still do a head check before changing lanes. There’s no substitute for it, even when using the blind spot mirrors...just make it a quick look, because the traffic situation can change very suddenly in front of you.
