Oh my goodness, this piece turned out so SO BEAUTIFUL! One thing that I’d like to caution you about! As a 65 year old mother of 2 and grandmother of 5. Please PLEASE don’t go to peoples home by yourself that you don’t know!! I’ve heard on the news one to many horror stories of people being tricked into a home and terrible things happening to them! AMAZING! It turned out so well. I did a navy desk for my dad. He needed a desk that he could put his wheelchair under. I found an antique table that was probably used in an entryway. I ended up staining the top and doing the rest in the color "In the Navy" by Dixie Belle. He loves it and I kept looking at it and saying, I did that!

I just did a mcm set that is this same color combo. I used fusion in ash. It looked dark gray in the can but came out deep navy like yours. I used fusions hemp and beeswax on the whole thing to seal it instead of a traditional top coat. That wax was AMAZING on the wood I will say for your info because I think it will save you time and you can use it all over on dark colors 😉. I hate sanding more on a wood base after I painted a dark color close to it. I had to do the same as you too. I like how you tried a new brand and color. Great job!!

I apologize for being a downer here but I would like give you a little constructive advice. I refinish furniture for a living, including Antiques. If you had tinted the primer the same tint as your paint, or close to the color, you could have helped that stain blocker save you from applying an additional coat of paint. I also see you using way too many small/short brush strokes with the paint and sealer. I hope you can understand I had to learn by trial and error as well. Love your work though and I admire what you are bringing to KZbin. God Bless

There are so many different techniques and each painter tends to have their own habits and ways of doing things. Maybe she did not tint the primer because Bin is shellac based while the paint is ceramic based? Whatever the reason, I’m not sure how constructive your advise is.

I love the shade of blue 😘👌 with the dark walnut legs. Beautifully done! The hardware choice for this versatile piece will determine the style -if the client wants pewter then you need to go pewter. By not changing the style of hardware you maximized the style possibilities. I’d have gone with a more ornate design to pop from the clean lines of the piece but I could also see it with more modern style hardware. I really love the migration away from painting furniture with either ebony, some shade of white or a neutral like sage or taupe -blue is so cheerful and vibrant his blue in particular is unique and lovely! Very nice job. Ps maybe bc my dad was such a stickler for detail but I think you’d take your quality up a notch by finishing the bottom edge of the dresser and the bottom edge of the drawers. Both had spotty areas of primer and/or paint. Higher quality means you can charge more too… 😉 Look forward to seeing more of your projects/videos and I might have to try that blue Chippy Paint myself! 😊

Such a wonderful piece and you did a great job with it, Lauren! You mentioned it was commission piece. I typically am not a fan of gold, but I think gold hardware would've really popped against the navy. It makes sense that your client wanted to change the hardware color in order to stick with a color already used in other pieces within their living space. Uniformity makes sense. Either way, the unloved, forgotten piece now looks stunning and will once again be a part of someone else's life. That's a definite win for you, your client and this awesome dresser!

I actually love this. Thank you for posting this as this is exactly what I needed. I brought a depression era vanity and armoire back from my late mother's home that belonged to her parents and it is in about as tough shape, perhaps a little worse, than this piece was. I knew I was going to need to do some wood filling, sanding, and ultimately paint but wasn't sure which products to work with, and I was ideally going to replace the hardware as it's a burnished black, but most of the hardware in my home is silver -- but now seeing the rub and buff, this is what I'll go with to restore the hardware too and keep it all original. Your piece turned out fantastic and I hope in time mine will as well!

I find that thinning out the final coats as you progress through them gives you a smoother finish in the end. It has the effect of leveling itself like leveling cement and thinner means no streaks and zero bubbles. Of course you have to practice at it and cant load up the brushes or it will drip all over the place. A heat gun is another option on some finishes.
@sharleenseas98612 жыл бұрын
What do you use to thin the paint?
@Esuper12 жыл бұрын
@@sharleenseas9861 It depends on the base of the paint you are using. Water with water based paint or acrylics and turpentine or odorless mineral spirits for oil based paint. Read the can, it should say there somewhere what sort of paint it is.

I personally like the cool of the silver with a dark navy but I agree, it depends on what your client's current color/metal theme is in their home. I am not completely sold on rub and buff yet, have only worked with ebony and found adherence issues with it but for spot fixes it is awesome. I had chosen oil rubbed bronze fixtures in the bathroom and had to tone down some of the "copperish bronze' accents on the pieces, worked well. Thank you for the explanation for the bondo choice, I need to pick some up tomorrow for a trim piece repair.

There are several types of bleed through..wood tannins from certain wood species; certain clear finishes create bleed through as they break down; and then there is embedded nicotine from long term abuse from smokers. All of which need to be blocked from bleeding into your paint layer.

Glad to see that there's a Wood Bondo. I'll have to try it. Damage a lot of the times keeps me from buying pieces. This will definitely be a game changer. Does this primer come in gray? I use gray under dark colors. It always takes no less than 2 coats and sometimes 3. If I paint a dark color, I usually add a little of my paint color. It helps a lot. One thing I can't stand is streaks in a top coat. Doesn't it kinda make you ill when you get a piece completed and have to redo something? It does me !! What a great change !! I would've put gold hardware but like you said, you have to do what the customer wants. I love this MCM piece. Thanks Lauren and Neiman for another great video !!
@FurnitureFlippingTeacher3 жыл бұрын
Bondo is a game changer for sure! This primer doesn't come in gray but can be a bit tinted to be gray. I never thought of seeing about putting a bit of my paint in the primer to tint it that color. I may have to try that! Glad you liked the final result! Thanks for watching!

If you can’t get a grey primer for under dark colours, use clear shellac. It’s an excellent stain blocker, primer, and nasty smell encapsulater. Way better than primer.
