Hi! I've been learning English with Oxford Online English since 2years ago.. And... 'could' still make me confused. Yesterday, I red a book, I wrote down. In this book, there's one sentence that I can't understand... it's about 'could' Peter hopped through the woods. A path led to the farmer's gate. Peter squeezed under the gate and looked around. "I see green leaves everywhere!", said Peter. Peter wandered through the garden. He ate some lettuce. He ate some green beans. He ate some radishes. "These vegetables are delicious", said Peter. I'll eat some more. Then he hopped around the corner. Peter gasped, "The farmer!" The farmer gasped, "A rabbit!" Peter ran as fast as he could. In my opinion.. the last sentence is wrong... because.. Peter ran as fast as he could.. This is about a specific ability at a specific momnent to me.. So... It could be Peter ran as fas as he was able to. Am I wrong? Please.. would you help me? ... take care.. and thank you for making of lessons Oxford Online English helps me a lot!!
@Oxfordonlineenglish1
@Oxfordonlineenglish1 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there. We're happy you enjoy the lessons! Good question. In this situation, 'could' is the correct word to use. We would use 'be able to' in a sentence like: 'Peter was able to run away from the farmer,' or, 'Peter was able to escape.' You will commonly see 'could' in situations like, 'Peter ran as fast as he could.' For example: 'She did the best she could during the exam,' or, 'We arrived as early as we could.' Basically, it's a way of explaining the highest possible ability for that activity. Hope this helps you!
