In this lesson, you can learn how to use would have, should have and could have. Did you learn anything new in this lesson? Let us know in the comments!
These verbs-would, should, could, etc.-are modal verbs, so they don’t have past forms like normal verbs do. Instead, you can talk about the past by adding have plus a past participle after the verb.
In this class, you’ll learn how to use these modal verbs to talk about the past in English, what they mean, and how they’re different. Keep practicing after you watch and try a class with an OOE teacher today: bit.ly/ooe-teachers.
See the full version of this lesson with text: www.oxfordonlineenglish.com/w....
This lesson will help you:
- Learn what the imaginary past is with 'would have'.
- Learn what the imaginary past is with 'could have'.
- Use 'could have' to talk about possibility for the past.
- See how to use 'could have' to criticize something someone didn't do.
- Explain that someone was lucky to avoid something in the past using 'could have'.
- Use 'should have' to criticize something someone did or didn't do in the past.
- Talk about something you expected to happen, but it actually didn't, using 'should have'.
Contents:
1. Would Have 1:34
2. Could Have 3:58
3. Should Have 7:42
4. Would Have, Could Have, Should Have 10:23

That is a great lesson. In the past, I've always mixed those three verbs, thinking that they have the same kind of function, especially 'would' and 'could'. However, now everything is clear to me, and I'm confident that in the future, I won't have a hard time using them. Thank you so much for this lesson ❤

Hi my great teachers! Thanks for teaching us about "would have" , "could have" and "should have" And I've come across the following sentence : "If the photograph was taken in 1999 , I would have been ten years old" I've got a native speaker saying the sentence And my question is : Why is the first part of the sentence "was taken" and not "had been taken" Someone took the photographer in the past , then why not "had been taken" ? It's a conditional sentence , isn't it ? And also I've come across such a sentence which is "I wish I never met you" The act of meeting is in the past but why not "had never met" Could you explain why ? Thank you so much!

Should have/could have/would have, thre are model verbs, are used for the past.Should have ,is used for regret and self-criticism.For exampl, I should have married Marinda before she got married...would have ,is used for imaginary past.For example, I would have got married her, If I had estates.Her father disliked poor. Could have,is used for guess.For example, my friend,John Keat say that I could have accepted the award.He chastised me why didn't accept it?Thanks both of my respected teachers. I have no such words for both of your compliment, but will say you (both)are matchless among your contemporaries .Bundle of thanks.

The best thing I learn in this lesson is that "would, should, could" are modal verbs, which don't have past forms. Back in the days when I learned English at school in my country, "would and could" were kind of mistaken as the past forms of "will and can," and that made it really confusing with the idea adding "have + P.P." to talk about the past. Thank you so much for pointing that out right at the beginning of this lesson!
@Oxfordonlineenglish1
@Oxfordonlineenglish1 5 жыл бұрын
It's a common point of confusion! The problem is that in some cases, 'could' and 'would' *are* the past forms of 'can' and 'will', but they're also full modals in their own right. Modals are complex, I think.
@tyoahsan6617
@tyoahsan6617 Жыл бұрын
Hi! I love this lesson, it helps me so much with my understanding of the modal verbs. I've just recently found an example of the use "how could you" to express our disapproval or to show that we dislike that someone has done something : "How could you have gone without telling me ?" I'm really confused about that sentence because usually with "could have" it indicates that something was possible but we did not do it and in that sentence did I actually go ? Or was it only a possibility that I did not do ? But if it was only a possibility, I would think, it doesn't fit the idea of someone doing something that we dislike because "could have" means we did not do it. What would the explanation be for that ? Thank you in advance.

What a great lesson i got . As for the "could have~" we usually think of it as imaginary past alone. So whenever I happened to read the other usages, to guess~ to criticise~ to say that ~lucky, i was so confused that it made me crazy. Now thanks to this lesson, i have clearly understood the usages. thanks again. Acturally, the "could have usages" are not explained in detail like your class in any other grammar book. What a wonderful~ I've finally got to know what I have been eager to
