I just started personal training about a year ago, and this podcast has flipped everything I knew about personal training. I went from barely knowing what to do to help clients to being confident that I can help almost anybody. I get a tremendous amount of value from the free stuff y’all put out. I am 20 years old moved out and paying for massive amounts of protein, but as soon as I can afford it , I am looking forward to buying all the maps courses and seeing how that adds even more value to training others and even my own training. Guys provide useful information and advice on fitness topics and it’s a knowledge for me and everyone who are involved in fitness. P.S. For instance, a person is doing cardio training on treadmill and aimed to complete at least 5 Km. Despite time differences to complete 5km, calories burned from jogging and walking would be same right? Would appreciate your thoughts on this 😊

13:50 “Muscle is the side effect of strength” So spot on. All these enhanced KZbinrs have confused people into thinking they can just do isolation lifts, cables, etc at a high volume and jet jacked out of their mind, but natural lifters have to build that base of strength before they can really pack on muscle anyway.

I appreciate you guys, but this may confuse people. Cardio does burn fat. It’s really about how much someone does that will determine if the body turn catabolic and starts to consume muscle for energy. Diet timing and exercise duration are critical factors.

My cardio of choice is jumping rope, and I do it for 20-30 min 5-6 days per week. But I've never done it for fat loss purposes. It's more for heart health, vo2 max, and to stay conditioned for lifting intensity. Also, it's such a great way to start the day right out of bed with full body circulation. Aside from that, I love outdoor walking on a daily basis just to be generally active and get some extra sun. It's great for health/wellness.

Keep on listening dude, maybe even re-watch the episode. The folks who are in your situation are exactly who we are trying to reach with this message. To sum it up: If you rely on cardio for fat loss, it will be a constant uphill battle- and like you said, if you stop, you lose. What we are saying is that you can actually teach your body to burn body fat on its own. You can only do that with strength training! It isn't so much about the calorie burn during exercise, its about the calorie burn during the other 23 hours of the day. Again, maybe rewatch the episode to get a more in-depth explanation. Best of luck to you!

I really appreciate this episode, as someone who is on a journey to lose 75+ lbs to hopefully start a family with my husband (and who has battled being overweight their entire life) I’m constantly fighting the temptation to go all in on cardio because that’s what gave me ‘quicker results’ in the past. But honestly I enjoy lifting weights way more anyways, and this episode gave me some relief from that pressure and to keep my focus on strength. I still want to improve my health overall though so knowing how to program some HIIT and more steps in to help my heart and endurance is so helpful. Grateful to mind pump!

I love your videos, but here, I think you totally missed the ball… Cardio is the best way of loosing fat. Period. As any exercise, you cannot rely only on it in the long run. And that should be the message. You mention at one point of your video: look at high-level sports people… yes, I have: no one has a leaner body than medium to long distance runners or swimmers, or soccer players… When you are 100 pounds overweight, the fact that you loose some muscle when doing cardio is totally irrelevant… you need to loose fat, and Cardio will be the way to go (at the initial phase). I believe you need to change your message: Cardio is the best thing you can do, but if you think is the only thing that you have to do, it is wrong as well (as it is wrong only doing weight training). I just lost 44 pounds walking. I am building muscle now, and I am not paying attention to the scale anymore. Thanks for the rest of the videos!! 🙏🏽

A lot of the misinformation about cardio for fat loss comes from the tradition of PED enhanced bodybuilders who made doing hours and hours of LISS cardio for fat loss a thing. Even drug enhanced athletes can burn away muscle with too much cardio. I can’t emphasize how important this episode is for all individuals, enhanced or not. Like, save to favorites, listen to again and again if you hit a plateau.

Walking is cardio so this title is misleading. Areas where there is more transportation options like taking buses, metros and bicycle have on average less body fat than in society's where there minimal transportation options where they use their own car. And even when you are not moving you get anxiety and end up eating more. When you walk your not only burning fat you also have less appetite because you have less anxiety.

I haven't trained in 6wks the last week was the 3rd wk in MAPS Performance, where I had just completed Anabolic. I get alot of cardio at work but want to start lifting again where should I start back? I have not been able to workout (strength train) for about 6-7 weeks. However i am very active 4-5 days a week at work where I work 12-14hr days lifting 10-50lbs, climbing, squatting, walking. I get between 9000-12000 steps a day at work alone depending on the day. I only get about 6-7 hrs of sleep. There were a few things with my heart that was keeping me from lifting, right now the last thing is a injured middle finger that is pretty much almost healed but in a stint.

I'm glad Adam said what he did about cutting calories. I'm surprised Sal brought it up the way he did. That was NOT the way to bring up that point. Otherwise, I liked the discussion. As someone who's performance-driven, I would say cardio is essential. And I know these guys tend to denounce circuit training and doing strength training when fatigued, but that's basically counter to performance. If you want to be most capable, you have to be versatile and strong even when you're fatigued.

Wish I had heard this 6 months ago. I lost 40 lbs since April using tons of cardio and dieting. But now I'm a string bean with a bit of stomach fat, melted away all my muscles. So now I'm lifting and bulking to try and get my muscle back. I sure did this backwards.

My wife and I have this debate all the time, I got my daughter doing Maps 15 advanced with me and she and I are seeing some pretty good results so hopefully one day my wife will consider doing a round of at least maps 15 with me and just walking after listening to this one. Just a side note my wife looks amazing so it’s hard to win the argument when what she is doing is working for her 🤷🏼‍♂️

Great fuggin episode! I have been on hiatus from you guys for a while now (consumed in other life matters) and this is great refresher into your guys philosophy of training. And I’m a runner! Ran half marathons, 10ks and 5ks, but just for fun, knowing full well that it wouldn’t really help me build muscle. But just for kicks, but I still lift. This was a great discussion, I love and am enchanted by the dialogue 👍🏽🔥🤘🏽

🎉🎉🎉thank you! This is what I ordered! I am a coach and I am planning a coaching plan for brides to be in their optimal health by their wedding. And I know (even before I even launch my program) that I will have some cardiobunnies who I need to convert to just building muscle 💪 thank you guys 🎉🎉🎉

Needed this episode... trying to encourage my gal, who is more interested in cardio, to pair up with some strength. Pair that with this episode "How To Convince Friends & Family To Workout | Mind Pump 2152" :-) Killing it guys.

I have been lifting over a year now and not only losing fat but the ladies are paying lots more attention to me now. Looking strong and more fit. I have been eating whole foods and lifting full body three days a week but no Cardio. Now I want to add cardio to work the heart and hopefully help the high blood pressure issue I have. But I don't want to hurt the strength training. This coming March 24th I will be 60 :)

My wife finally followed me to the gym and after that I’ve been trying to convince her of this concept regarding cardio. What program would you recommend for her to focus more on strength building than cardio?

I do 4 day split upper/lower and the other 3 days I just enjoy staying active such as walking etc sometimes on incline treadmill if I need to hit step goals etc but what I have noticed is that due to my strength training, if I do fall off my ‘diet’ it has a far less impact than it use to when I was doing such things as Insanity DVD etc! Great video!
