I’ve been on my journey for 7 weeks now. The scale basically stopped moving but I’m still continuing and not giving up because stopping won’t get me any closer to my goals. I now love doing research and finding videos like this one to keep me motivated and educated

I lost 20 lbs in 2 months and was stuck there at 180 for 5 months. I concentrated on continuing to avoid sugar and processed foods not binging and dealing with cravings. It was discouraging but I was feeling better and my appetite and cravings were under control. I made a point to get deep sleep. After 5 months I’ve lost 4 lbs and at 176 which has been 20 yrs since I’ve been that thin. I want to be 150. Don’t stop if you plateau cause you sure don’t want go in reverse.

@@NA-sb2kd middle of week 9. Still making strides. Turns out I’ve been gaining muscle and my body fat percentage dropped by 4 percent. Still not a big scale impact but it’s all great parts of the journey.

The moment that Sal said standing up while watching tv is resistance training, or an 80 yr old holding their arm above their head for 10 seconds is resistance training.....sold me. Any little movement is the real deal. He appears to be willing to start where people are.

As a woman, watching this is so refreshing! He has busted so many myths with simplicity which otherwise are really complex topics. I am 8months postpartum now starting to get back to my workout routines. One thing I am going to be doing more is strength training and doing less of cardio. Heavy cardio is just not sustainable. In fact makes you want to eat more and negate the gains.

I started my journey 7 years ago. I’m still going strong. It’s my lifestyle now. And I don’t workout for a long time. I’m just consistent. And to me the nutrition is number 1.

I don’t use my scale anymore. I have Sal’s book - I’ve been following the first exercise program , cleaning up my nutrition , building muscle - my clothes fit better, I’m getting stronger - I know it’s working. Slow body changes- and my daughter told me that I look tighter.,❤ Thank you Sal! Let’s go Sharks! 😂

I really appreciate how Sal shared his personal struggles with health and fitness ❤ I can relate as I beat myself up in the gym all through my 20’s because I was bulemic and trying to burn every single “extra” calorie that I over-indulged in. Now in my 40’s I lift weights and train for longevity and strength 💪 I’m in better shape at 47 then I ever was in my 20’s! Now I’m finally taking care of myself the way I deserve ❤

18:15 I love this. People keep sayivng "calories in vs calories out" is dumb, old-think and just gets people frustrated and often even fatter. But, it's simply a fact that to lose weight, you must exist in a calorie deficit for some time. So "eat less, move more" is based in truth, but that little blurb is leaving out a universe of information you need to be successful. The main thing I had to learn for myself was to reevaluate my relationship with food. If you are like I was, and were looking to get an emotional pick-me-up from food you've really got to address that. Food is fuel, and the better the fuel the better you're body runs. And "runs" applies to everything in your life. How you feel, how you look, how you sleep, how you walk and run or bike and lift and combinations of all those things. But the cool thing is, the best fuel is satisfying and delicious. Has anyone ever eaten a "girly salad" and honestly thought "man! That really hit the spot"?

Sal is the real deal. He understands the importance of psychology (making better food decisions, building sustainable and healthy habits and patterns of behavior, stress management, adequate sleep), diet (the effects of certain foods, varied hormonal responses, how the body metabolizes specific foods/macronutrients) and exercise. It's all connected.

This explains why I can go hard 3 weeks then take a break and get gains during the rest or muscle rest. I get way stronger than continuing week to week to week. I get gains when I take breaks. Then it’s been year since I’ve been consistent relative to Covid and I still am 30% fat as an older woman which is out of shape to me but better than average to other women. Then when I get consistent it’s like I pop right back to 26% fat and lean out fairly quickly… but I’m no sugar, no fast food, no gluten, paleo, a gallon water everyday, I cook my meats and veggies and still food prep so 45min nature walks 2x week and get started back lifting twice a week The video has helped me not stress about what I’m doing. Thank you so much!

What a great episode. I listened to it on Apple podcasts, but I wanted to swing over here and leave a supporting comment. Due to some health challenges of my own, like Sal, I decided to focus on health. For about six months, I have been lifting weights twice a week with a trainer, and slowly slowly slowly he is helping me clean up my food intake. And I feel so much better, which keeps me motivated. Thanks for the reinforcement, Sal!

Wow, this is great! Couldn't stop listening. It puts me in a happy place. I believe in balance and flow, so this resonates. I'm 63 years old and at an ideal weight with great body composition. Granted, I'm genetically predisposed towards gaining and maintaining muscle and enjoying protein more than carbs. I've had 5 kids. When I was trying to get back into shape, I turned to what I called "jock geeks"; those muscle building PhDs. This was the 1990's. I always come back to strength training. Love it! My routine was recently destroyed by a family addition, a new puppy. Trying to get back into something! First thing, a waited vest when I take the puppy out to play. A little voice says, "do some squats." While listening, I've lined my kettlbells up for easy access. Headed to Mexico so I'm taking my resistance bands with me! Soooo happy!

Most trainers today have the same information you are speaking about. As a female trainer and 40 years in a gym, the old school areas "for women only" was to help make them feel more comfortable in a gym. Not being surrounded by men and feeling inadequate. They were separated from the leering eyes of men.

Great interview, really enjoyed it and absorbed all the info. ive listened a few times now. i put it on while i do my daily walks as i chase health and fitness. i was told by drs id be in a wheelchair by 40 years old. here i am at 46 and taking full advantage of what i have and on a mission to look and feel the best I ever had.

I go to the gym consistently 8 months out of the year then fall off during the winter and I always beat myself up about because I lose the muscle so fast and feel weaker every time I get back in the gym. This really is what I needed to hear to stay consistent and have a healthier mindset about working out. I gotta be kinder!

I listened to the whole thing! I bought his book. I have never read a health and fitness book all the way through but his book. It's really easy read and it's not a gigantic book that's overwhelming. Starting working out according to his program in the book!

Great information. This is why I don’t like using the scales as a only measurement of progress. I do a DEXA Scan twice a year and lift weights 4 times a week. My body composition is changing …I feel stronger BUT was surprised to learn I had gained 6 pounds but that weight gain is ALL muscle! So My doctor says to keep doing what I’m doing.

I’ve been maintaining my body weight easily for the last 8 months, after a 110lb weight loss over a couple years. I definitely look different….my clothes for different….but yes….Im tiny…..but fit af! I look at pics of me from 8 months ago….I see muscles now! 💪🏽❤️🇨🇦

I'm totally with you one everything. The more I eat healthy foods, the more processed and fast food do not even taste good to me anymore. Going out to eat has become less pleasant because my palette has changed. It's great because I can still enjoy a really good restaurant every now and then but the mediocre and fast food places no longer tempt me. I'm preparing my own meals. It's a lot cheaper too. But what's wrong with a good pizza (I'm not talking about a processed out-of-the-box pizza). You've got a thin crust, tomato sauce, cheese, meat and veggies. Sounds like real food to me. That seems like it should be fine.

61, jacked in my younger years. Retired in February and retired abroad, with my main goal year one to get back into shape. I’m a long time Vegan and currently living in the mountains of Nicaragua. We walk everywhere and eat VERY little processed foods. I went right back to volume lifting and got gains but then started watching Mentzer / Yates high intensity training and my gains for the last 7 months have SKYROCKETED ! A new PR every time in the gym. My body has made tremendous changes. I do NOT feel better walking home from the gym, I feel wiped out and I LOVE IT. I’m down 35 pounds without dieting. My bench, for example, has gone from 135 to repping 225. High intensity training also helps me prevent injuries. Chest/shoulders/triceps….off 72 hours. Legs….off 72 hours. Back n biceps…..off 72 hours I have 10 grandkids and I am going to be jacked grandpa for as long as possible. We will be traveling Latin America for 4-5 years and I never want to look like a target…and I don’t.

I believe in teaching our kids about fitness when young and work out together so they create the good habits. My grown kids still workout together and that stems from the ymca maybe? I like what you say Sal 🎉

I lost weight by adding fat and protein to my diet. I lost weight doing the keto diet. I feel good and its been easier than other diets I have tried.

A lot of the reach is moving into an anti-rotation movement pattern, a suitcase carry would work. Then during mobility work you work on your rotation.

I've always disliked working out because I find it so boring and I am one of those who was an athlete from elementary - part of college and I learned to be tough, to push through a little of the burn. Since then, I've only gotten my physical activity from just routine, daily tasks like housework, yardwork and walking for the most part, very little time in the gym. I have bands and other strength training gear at home though and I could TOTALLY do what you're saying, 15 minutes a day! I am very busy and more than that would just not get done but I can do 15 minutes. And I like that it's every day so I build the habit. 45 minute workouts don't fit into my schedule. I'm very obese and want to improve my health and fitness so I'm excited to know I can do it this new way! Thank you!

I used to work a job that used to get me no less than 20k plus steps. I changed to a static job Infront of a pc and made a rule that for every hour I'm sat for I'll do a 20 mins walking patrol. I still hit the same amount of steps that I used to in my old job just by doing this.

I used to think the whole pink women's gym section was condescending too but later realized that the pink stuff repelled men from invading those spaces. Gyms are pickup centers. If you really just want to workout and not get hit on, the pink section is useful. Now, it's headphones that save you, but not always. Some guy doesn't always get it.

I'm so glad that Sal is saying this and using this approach, sustainably, I do want to completely change my health and have taken that approach and have been focusing on my health and not just weight loss. I have also been saying that I want to lose permanent fat and just lose weight. Things have become different now, my approach is totally different, I thank God that my mind frame is different now. I'm going to accomplish a real lifestyle change.

Fasting helps not only with permanent fat loss, but also with muscle building! When you're on a diet you always lose muscle, but when you fast for short periods you not only don't lose muscle but gain more!

I can attest to what Sal is saying. In college I lost about 30 pounds through lowering calories and mostly cardio workouts. I barely went down a size. A classmate of mine was a similar weight and height, but had a good amount of muscle. I would guess she was about 4 sizes smaller than me. I have had this happen two other times also. And I got discouraged, gave up, and gained weight back. Now with my health in many ways in a bad place I am taking a different approach. It is heck of scary to try a new way. It is tough to believe that it will work. I have well over 100 pounds to lose. I am having to retrain my mind as well as my body. It is terrifying to go against those voices and expectations of how things "should" be done for success.

All of these tips related to food and how to eat and the additional tips are all things Dr Phil said in his book years ago . I lost weight back then following that book. Unfortunately I fell off the wagon and I am now trying again.

One thing I'll add about whey protein is that it can be used as part of a smoothie, which is more dense and filling. 1) 20oz water. 2) Two scoops of whey protein. 3) One cup of oats (adds thickness and consistency). 4) A bit of natural peanut butter. 5) Frozen fruit like raspberries or strawberries. Something like this is packed full of nutrient dense healthy food while also getting a ton of protein and being satisfying/filling. Versus just adding 1-2 scoops of whey to water and drinking that down.

On 5/01 I quit addiction to soda which was 24/7, then did a food elimination for 30 days returning to clean foods, zero processed. It was hard, but my the benefits!!

I am at the point in my wt./health/mineral and electrolytes journey that I need to maintain and rebuild any lost muscle and flexibility lost the previous 2 years, due to illnesses and injuries from an auto accident. All while fitting in stretching and flexibility exercises. Also on my list was reducing/ eliminating unnatural/ refined foods & additives. I've lost 25-30 lbs tracking food and beverages, combined with classes at the YMCA and increased walking. I go to dance fitness, and now adding tai chi, and soon Silver Sneakers chair exercises, and SS yoga, ... after allowing for pulled quadriceps on my right leg to heal. When I first went back to the YMCA this year, I went right from walking the track, wt. wt. machines, and pool exercises, to dance fitness, then into this SS and tai chi. But in the first real, like Yoga session is when I pulled those muscles. I also got sick (Covid), and the pool n the shower water smell made me nauseous. Hopefully, this is going to pass by Sept. Lesson learned ... one can't just take off after two years of being sedentary. It has also occurred to me that between having covid this year and last year, January, the auto accident followed by shingles, I was really pushing it. It had also occurred to me finally that I could be having lngering Covid effects. Fast forward to now. I am looking forward to returning to the wt room soon. ☺️

Dont need a gym membership to do weight resistance exercises...get a chinning bar...do situps...pullups... pushups...all free and very effective

@richardlawson6787 Exactly what I used to do so many years ago. 😆 Haven't done any floor exercises for quite a while. But, since my arm, shoulders, neck wrists, ribs n my torn. meniscus and right thigh are healed up pretty good, I'm hoping to be able to get back to the old exercise, yoga and Calinetics routines.
