If after cleansing and / or toning, sunscreen is the first skin care product that should go on your skin during the day, and a chemical exfoliant such as glycolic is the first product in the evening, if you want to apply both in the morning, which one should be applied first? In this episode of DermTV, Dr. Schultz discusses how to use chemical exfoliants in the morning with sunscreen.

I usually recommend applying sunscreen as the first skincare product in the morning and chemical exfoliants like glycolics and retinoids as the first skincare product at bedtime. The reason I recommend this for sunscreen is to insure it’s in direct contact with clean skin... so it can delivers its labeled level of sun protection… since that’s how it was tested to demonstrate its SPF. And for the exfoliant, to insure its optimal efficacy by also being in direct contact with clean skin. But if you need an extra boost of exfoliation and want to use glycolic in the morning also, which goes on first, the sunscreen or the glycolic?
Obviously the sunscreen and exfoliant can’t both be first, and which ever goes on first could potentially diminish the efficacy of the second… unless they’re both applied at the same time, in the same product!
As you probably know, I’m a huge fan of combination products and here’s a great example of why. If your sunscreen and chemical exfoliant are combined in one product, you get the best of both worlds… no decrease in the rated SPF level and no second vehicle to interfere with the exfoliant.
Easy and perfect! Almost. Here’s the catch: you need to reapply your sunscreen variable numbers of times during the day but multiple applications of a potent chemical exfoliant would probably be irritating. So while a combination sunscreen and exfoliant product is a great way to start the day, when it’s time to reapply your sunscreen later on, use one that has no exfoliant. Just SPF and broad spectrum protection!

I have always taken your advise to apply my physical spf directly onto my clean skin as my first step, once it sinks in, i follow with my moisturizer. However, i constantly hear from "skin care experts" and even dermatologists to apply sun protection after you skin care has absorbed, as the last step in you morning routine. ex:(cleanse,tone,serum,moisturize...lastly apply your sun protection) Can you please reiterate your thoughts on this, and whether there is any real danger/benefit of apply an spf as a first or last skin care step. Thanks

In regards to re-applying sunscreen, do you know of a product that can be used over your makeup without interfering with it?

Hello Dr Schultz, I have sensitive skin and I've been wondering if I could use a glycolic acid exfoliating and then hydroquinone? I use glycolic acid on a daily basis and works wonderful for my skin.

At 0:48 you said "What goes on first could potentially diminish the efficacy of the second". I'm assuming that this won't happen if the first product has a lighter vehicle than the second product right?

I'm wondering the same. I feel like his opinion regarding the order of application differs greatly from the mainstream conventional views of applying sun protection as a last step in skin care. He has consistently stated the importance of applying spf first (unless its a combination product which is obvious) I've been doing his method for years and my skin has benefited immensely from it, yet i often wonder why no one else agrees with this.
