Chorus with high gain is my ABSOLUTE favorite. Iron Maiden Somewhere In Time is the absolute best sound an album ever had, and that thing oozes with chorus. Same for You Got Another Thing Comin' by Judas Priest. Or the Turbo Lover Solo, what an amazing sound. There are dozens of stellar tones I could list which have chorus on high-gain tones.

Chorus / detune is great with distortion for just this reason. I'm really curious about the chorus in the ToneX and if it can still my hunger for these types of tones.

You've Got Another Thing Comin' is a great tune, but sadly an example of too much chorus making things sound unnatural and washed out - especially considering that KK and Glenn were probably using treble boosters at the time the tune was recorded. Just a bit too much. Even live recently, still too much on Glenn's sound. Richie, however, sounds great. Not exactly sure if he's got chorus running.

Everyone needs to remember all this stuff is about personal preference. If you hate chorus….you hate chorus. There is no right or wrong and telling other players what sounds “good” and what doesn’t does nothing but create these ridiculous “camps” of players that all begin to sound exactly the same. Metal music is particular cultish in its adherence to convention. Providing tips on how to use effects like chorus to achieve a certain sound if they WANT it is the value here and why I like this channel. Keep up the good work!! 🤘🤘

Death used chorus on high gain amps, one of my favorite tones
@mattvdhАй бұрын
Yeah the 80's hair metal guys used them a lot to get a really lush tone. I saw an 80's cover band use this setup with jcm800 and it sounded so cool. Adds a certain coloration. If you're getting a washy sound, you're doing it wrong. Apparently the 80s/90s guys used a Electro-Harmonix CE-2 or Boss CE-1

I love chorus (or modulation in general) with high gain...I grew up on it with Korn, Orgy, Fear Factory, A Perfect Circle, etc. When you listen to those bands you'd be hard-pressed to ever call those sounds "dated". They still hold up 25 years later. Maybe the old 80s way of using chorus on high-gains amps may not have stood the test of time, but the Nu-Metal genre sure as hell brought a LOT of effects that fell by the wayside back to life. So application and context is the most important thing. Maybe if you're in a blues band, a chorus pedal might not be the best thing, but I bet there's some dude out there (hopefully) bucking the trend, doing something different and really making good use of it.

The best “chorus” on high gain for me is a static detune. I usually go for flange for high gain modulation. Even a bit of front end phase on a solo like Jake E Lee.

Had to subscribe to your channel considering how gracefully and constructively you handled my comment. This is a great video explaining how chorus can be used to enhance but not take over a high gain tone. As you mentioned, it was over-used in the 80's. I believe the effect that the favorite was the Roland Dimension D rack unit. I'm also fairly certain it's why Bob Bradshaw had to set up the center dry cabinets in many of the rigs he made for people so that the sound would have the immediacy and punch that was lost due to the effects. This leads me to another possible way to set up the downstream digital - with a parallel effect loop, which is what the GigRig Wetter Box is meant for. All in all, you've given me some food for thought as to how to preserve the high gain tone - but it has to be done sparingly as you mentioned. Clean tones - lay it on, dirty - easy on the mustard please.

I use a Boss CE5 on all my rhythm guitars... very subtle use but it makes a huge difference, it gives the tone depth, character and fattens everything up... also it makes your tone sound like your guitars are all quad tracked without actually having to quad track anything.

I typically put mods in the loop, but if you want to get rid of the "sheen" of chorus over high gain then just put it in front of the amp. I keep two mods on my board. One in front and one in the loop so I can choose where I want it for that part.

Pretty simple: go wet / dry when looking to use chorus with distortion (i.e. run chorus in parallel so that it doesn't directly affect the dry distortion tone).

The evh chorus is the best i ever used with distorted sounds because its more of a still chorus and a waving type, but i hate the damn input and output crap they out on it...but im gonna have to rethink my chain now if i wanna use the stereo delay that's coming to the tonex.. 1 input on the evh made it less versatile.
@charlesb7831Ай бұрын
I don't know, I think Zakk Wylde has a massive, fantastic tone and he uses Chorus quite a bit, Paul Gilbert still uses it. I've been using a MXR stereo chorus for 20 years , I just dialed it a little on the mild side, enough to hear it , but not overwhelming. The great EVH used it quite a bit as well. Just my 2 cents anyway for what it's worth lol.
@nasticanastaАй бұрын
the only way is to run the pedal in stereo through both amp fxloops...it widens your tone, you can't fail with 2 amps in stereo
@grahambrecke9292Ай бұрын
it works best in stereo. It widens the stereo field a lot, works well with delay and reverb. if chorus is to much try detune works great and is known as still chorus its chorus with out the movement. lots of great pedals for this eventide makes a couple good ones. all of that sounds much better than the sounds on here.

We can take Jarrod seriously when he actually employs animals that can Hear. Human Hearing is not good enough at this point. Until Jarrod uses the Greater Wax Moth to determine "chorus usage" can we take him seriously? Or how about the Beluga whale? Best Hearing in the water. Jarrod wants us to trust Human hearing when he could take his videos to the next level and use the best set(s) of ears on the planet to prove his point. Until Jarrod tests his A/B stuff with the Greater Wax Moth or a Beluga Whale this video is really just junk science. When the Greater Wax Moth identifies the "sheen" on top of the tone then I can take him seriously.
