How to use Cryptomattes in Redshift and Cinema 4D

1. The cryptomatte AOV generates mattes for your 3D render based on an ID type which you determine in the cryptomatte settings. It’s much more time efficient and flexible then using puzzle mattes.
2. Add the cryptomatte AOV to your AOV manager. Select the cryptomatte and under ID type make sure Object Name is chosen.
3. There are four different ID types - Object Name, Material Name, RS Object ID, and User Attribute. For this tutorial we’ll go over how to use the Object Name ID type. The "Object Name" ID Type uses the object naming conventions to build individual unique mattes based on object names.
4. If you’re rendering multi-layer EXRs turn off Multi-Pass output for the cryptomatte and make sure that Direct Output is enabled.
5. Import your render and the cryptomatte sequence into after effects.
6. Add them both to the same composition and apply the cryptomatte effect to the matte layer. Now click the layer parameter and hit OK on the box that appears.
7. With the effect selected in the effect controls panel, right click the object you would like to create a matte for. If you need to select several objects, hold shift and right click each object to add them all to the same matte.
8. Under Output select Matte only. Now you can use this layer to luma matte the selected objects.

Wow!!! I didn't know it before!!! I used to manually turn the selected object into white and other objects into black and then render it out for luma matte... It save me lot of time of extra render!!! Thanks 👍👍👍

Cryptomatte's are a godsend, thank you for the concise video! I'm running into a problem however where I have some DoF/bokeh in my scene, and when I matte my elements using the cryptomatte I get a white halo. Am i missing a step?

That is definitely possible. I think you would just make sure you un-check the multilayer exr file option when you set up the C4D save. Let me know if that works.

@@the-astropath In the meantime I found the answer :). You have to add a "$pass" token to the path like: D:\YourProject enders\$pass\whatever.exr the token added to the path ensures that a new folder will be created on every AOV you added before.

Any idea why the Cryptomatte pass doesn't work over Team Render? Enabling direct output and disabling multipass while using Team Render also doesnt result in files being rendered. This is really disappointing since you basically have to make a secondary render AND render locally just to use cryptomattes.
