When you originally purchased them, how many times did you launder them before use?

Kelly Hernandez thanks for the great question! I laundered them about 4 times before actual use and now they are super soft and absorbent after about a year and a half of use!

MommieTalk how long have your FSTs lasted? Mine have started to stink like ammonia. I did a bleach strip a few months ago, but the smell is back. I’m wondering if I should trash the FSTs I have and get new ones? Is there a way to salvage them? I’d hate to waste the 20+ inserts I have. We currently wash 3-4 times a week and mostly use Charlie’s soap (except our nanny had been using our liquid detergent on accident). Thanks in advance for the info!

Hi Kelly! Thanks for the question! My FSTs have lasted over two years and now they are stored for the new baby on the way! It definitely sounds like you are having a wash routine problem! What is the main brand of diapers that you use? Have you tested your water for hardness level?

Do you just use the flats or do you find you need a doubler, second flat, or prefold?

Hi Christina E! Back when my son was still an infant I just used the flats by themselves. Now that he’s a toddler and holds quite a bit more urine at a time I usually double it up with something like a microfiber insert or something! But I use pockets. Don’t use a microfiber if it’s going against the skin like in a cover. Put the microfiber inside the flat!

@@MommieTalk when you used the FST for the newborn did you use the pocket as a cover or not at all? If you used the pockets did you specifically use newborn pockets or did you use the newborn hack with one size?

I didn’t have any newborn diapers at the time my son was born. All I had were one sized so I used those when he was big enough to fit into them. I did use pockets with the inserts in the actual pocket but I know several people that use them like AI2’s! Where they just lay the insert right on top. Some people prefer that simply because of staining reasons so the actual diaper remains stain free

Do you know how big your flour sacks are? Mine seem to be really big! 30x30 do you use the FST as your only inset?

That depends on your baby! FST’s are pretty absorbent on their own but depending on how much output your baby is urinating at one time you might need some kind of booster. I have found the combination of one microfiber for fast absorption plus one folded FST for longer and more hold together make a pretty good combination but of course experimentation can be great to find out what works for you!
