One thing. For people who have problems with "muddy" colors: Use Cyan, Magenta and Yellow to mix colors and not Red, Blue and Yellow. Makes a big difference.
@aelineart86585 жыл бұрын
And remember that there are cold blues and warm blues, with a little bit of red in it. You may want to avoid these when making green, as they don't look as vivid as cold blue mixed with cold yellow. Same applies with all the other colours. But what is even better is to use pre-made colours for colours you use a lot, they are a lot more vivid and light-resistant.

It's the first video I see from you so I don't know if you're already aware of it, but the muddy grayish tone you get by mixing some colors is because of the complementary propertys of warm and cold colors. So mixing a cold red with a cold blue (both closer to violet than orange or green) you will get a cleaner look the white concealed the effect by bringing the values closer together, but you can still see some gray hints in the gradient (which doesn't mean it looks bad!) There are nice videos on that topic on youtube, so you might want to play around with it :)

A very helpful video. Adding white to a pigment tends to make it lighter in value and saturation, as when white and red make pink. How would you achieve a bright, matte red? Or for that matter, any deeply saturated color? Or a mix of deeply saturated colors? I had always assumed that all gouache colors were equally opaque, but I can now see that they are not.
@ShadowoftheDude6 жыл бұрын
A) Use colours that are opaque on their own, such as cadmiums and cobalts. B) Build up the colour in layers. C) Mix 1 part opaque white to 6-7 parts transparent colour, this should give you an opaque colour without losing too much saturation.
@ruchiju6 жыл бұрын
mixing magenta with a little bit of primary yellow should give you a quite opaque red without having to use white actually. I think white and yellow are the most opaque

Actually, there is a reason why using watercolor is so easy to get muddy. You have to figure out how one color is mixed. For ex: if you mix orange and blue, it will most likely create a brownish color, because I see that your orange is made up of more yellow than red, which make it a hot color type, but your blue is more likely to be on the cold type, which will create brownish muddy thingy.

Gouache is like a mix between acrylics and watercolor. If you don’t mix it with water it’s opaque like acrylics (it just dries matte and not shiny like most acrylics) and if you mix it with water it can get as transparent as watercolors

Prolly just continuously layering, starting a little transparent (i.e with more water to make it smooth, and then lowering the water content and making it more opaque/saturated as you go) bc as she mentioned, some of the pigments tend to stay transparent. or you can mix just a little bit of that white so as to not make it super noticeable (zinc white, not permanent or titanium white)

I have to paint some big images with big even surfaces (with irregular edges) on drawing paper and I found that I can’t work with acrylics because they are transparent and any layer shows his traces over and over again, anyhow I try to make it even. I believe that gouache paint could be the answer to my problems but I have some questions. Is there any need to protect the gouache paint with a varnish (for paper)? Can I write over the paint with fountain pen or sharp liner directly? It can keep the ink without spreading if it is absorbed by the paint surface? Thanks!

Please can you tell me, would you still get the streaks in the gradient if you used more colour and less white in these paints? I suppose I'm really asking how much white is required to make a smooth gradient in gouache? I like to use quite dark colours in my art, I like their intensity, but I have been getting the streaks you mentioned. I would like to remedy this situation by adding the white, but I don't really want pastel colours in my paintings, yet. Can you please advise me? Thank you in advance. Ps. I love your videos! You are brilliant! Regards from freezing South Wales.UK.
@MarySanche6 жыл бұрын
Yes, you can, but I would recommend trying several layers of thinner gradients, like the second gradient I did in this video. Not all colours are as streaky as quinacridone red, either - I purposely picked one of the most transparent reds. Only way to know for sure is to try! Sorry if it sounded like pastel was the only way to go - it's just that it usually behaves better haha

@MarySanche5 жыл бұрын
To get a very dark, opaque blue, I recommend using more opaque pigments like ultramarine and black. You may need a couple layers. Depends on the result you want. You can add a touch of white but white+black will diminish the saturation of your colour.
