There were some things I didn’t quite understand about iCloud and I tried learning something via videos which were all over the place with their info and I just couldn’t watch but for less than a minute. So I decided to use iCloud for a while on and off and then stopped bc I was unable to understand and coordinate all those files I had “roaming around” on my different devices! But thank goodness that I serendipitously came across your video which clarified everything for me, EVERYTHING! And you did this in just a few minutes! You were so clear and easy to understand from the very beginning! Thank you so much! You saved me a whole lot of time, especially time spent on other useless videos! 👍

I think the biggest inconvenience with iCloud Drive or any other similar service is that by default the preference is to MOVE files there and potentially lose them when I don’t want to use it, instead of copying and simply helping with copying files across devices, whenever i’m turning off iCloud Drive , the default action is to REMOVE files I currently have locally into iCloud Drive, as if by punishment, instead of simply leaving the device be, not everyone will always think of storing files locally or on an external drive, safe from the wrath of leaving iCloud Drive or similar services, my losing files that way before is one of the reasons for completely turning off iCloud altogether on all my devices and manually transferring files whenever I want to without the growing risk over time of forgetting how it works and losing files again. That said the video illustrates very nicely how it works

Excellent video. I have been using Macs since 1987 with System 3 using 800K floppy discs. I have gradually evolved the way I work as the Apple ecosystem has developed. Unfortunately when iCloud started it couldn't handle all my data files (not a real pseudo hard drive then), so I invested in Dropbox to synchronise between desktop and notebook computers. I am now migrating from Dropbox to iCloud, but I need to work out what I can remove from [paid for] Dropbox! With my data storage also including external hard drives, I am using around 10TB (including TimeMachine backup and a full main drive clone) so it is quite a mental task to work out what is where, and where it should be! Oh yes, I still have a USB floppy disc drive unit, just in case - and it works!

Very clear, very thorough. One question that you didn't deal with: when files are synced, where are the actual files? Duplicated on each device? Only in the cloud? This is important not just for understanding where your files are, but for managing storage on various devices.

They end up everywhere where iCloud is installed and logged into the same user account. Example: You create a document in the iCloud folder. This doc will get uploaded to iCloud @ apple and the will become available on all your other devices. Also if you delete the doc on any device then it will be removed from every device and from iCloud @ apple. If you don't have a backup of the doc file at another place like a external drive you will lose this document.

WOW!!! I wish someone or you had posted this video earlier because I have learned all these methods - well a hard way...lol!! Anyways, I watched the whole video, few points I learned from this video was understanding that iCloud when signed in, comes with its own desktop and documents and it sucks up all the data from out machine and puts it on cloud based, virtual desktop and documents!! You are just simply, amazing with your way of work and the kind of topics you bring up. Good Luck!

Thanks so much @Sheh Zad! I appreciate the kind words! I would clarify that when you choose the option to Sync the Desktop & Documents Folder to iCloud, it's just taking the existing Desktop and Documents folder on the Mac and making it part of the Cloud. Those are the only two folders that let you be part of that environment aside from the main iCloud Drive folder. Seriously though, thank you for the support and your feedback means a lot! Hi @Nick T! I'm glad this video was helpful and gave a little inspiration to keep moving forward and empower you to learn more! I have a few additional videos of mine that I'll link below in reference to your questions... THE MOST IMPORTANT APP ON YOUR MAC! - Getting started with The Finder! kzbin.info/www/bejne/imOwZJxsapd8i68 The Finder is your BEST FRIEND on your Mac. It's literally your entire file structure and digital filing cabinet. Master it and you will be 100% more efficient. That video above is a still relevant for the most part, but if you're on the latest macOS, you may have additional options of what you see there. Either way, it should still be helpful. iCloud Drive in itself is related to this, but it just has the options to sync the files to the cloud in addition to other devices. This video here you've already watched talks about iCloud Drive on the Mac, but I'll link one down below that focuses on iCloud Drive and file Management on an iPhone or iPad: UNDERSTANDING Apple's FILES App and HOW TO ORGANIZE DOCUMENTS in iCLOUD DRIVE on an iPhone and iPad! kzbin.info/www/bejne/r4rZdY2nbcl3a68 As far as duplicates are considered, are you talking about duplicates of just folder and files in general or duplicates of photos? I do have a video about duplicate photos that I'll link for reference, but not one of files/folders: HOW TO DELETE DUPLICATE PHOTOS in Apple Photos - IN DEPTH review of software to FIX your Duplicates! kzbin.info/www/bejne/jKG0Zp56mJh1rLM If it's duplicates of files/folders you're looking to conquer, first get an excellent grip on the Finder and that may help you figure it out. If not, there are some third party apps that are able to do this, but I haven't looked at them in a long while to even recommend a good one to use. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! Hi @Robert Viani, All Things Wood Heat & Maple, Oh no, I hope you didn't lose anything. Yeah, definitely format your drive to a Mac recommended format especially if you're using it for iMovie and such. I have another video on the topic of formatting drives that may be helpful if you have not seen it already. thank you!! very structured and clear tutorial. nice that you two macbooks to show and not only talk about what happens. I hope your channel is gonna refinance the second one. :) litlle side story... yeah the "cloud" is just another computer somewhere. people trust to much. because of that word. last year in france the building of a cloud service burnt down with most of its servers. so many people lost all their data. It's always good to have a second and third backup. I use icloud as an "instant" backup and time machine for my harddrives. I even keep my backup drives in different places "far" away. you know. :)

Great question @david davidd! External drives automatically backed up to what? Nothing is able to backup or auto backup to iCloud Drive. For Time Machine, you can have external hard drives back up to that automatically. Thanks so much for watching! Hi Joel, thank you for your videos. They are very helpful. I purchased the MacBook Air M2 as soon as it came out…a year after I sold my MacBook Air M1 after using it a few hours at most. My new MacBook sat unused for 3 months. Lol. I have finally begun to use it. I have had iPhones and iPads for years, but the Mac OS system is different enough that I have had much difficulty making the transition from Windows. Your videos are extremely helpful. I have two questions for you. 1. It seems like in one of your videos you recommended turning off both OneDrive and Google Drive, and having EVERYTHING, Windows based documents and apps sync with iCloud Drive. But I have not been able to locate anything since explaining exactly what should be “shut off” and what should be “left on”. I do have a Windows laptop as well. Question #2. I would really like the ability to edit pdfs. I like Adobe Acrobat Pro, but I think it’s ridiculous what they charge for one person who will realistically be using their software 2-3 times per month. It appears I may be able to do some pdf editing using Apple Books? But I’m guessing not enough. Bottom line, I have researched other options. Each article or video begins with hope that there are other options, but at the end I am left with, “unless I am willing to figure out workarounds, it’s Adobe Acrobat”. Before I bite the bullet and begin a subscription with them I thought I would see if you have any suggestions. Thank you!
@Learnwithjoel
@Learnwithjoel Жыл бұрын
Hi @Scot Stevig! I appreciate you and your kind words! I'm glad you're finally using your Mac! :-) Let's start with question 1: It's not that I recommend that you only and exclusively use iCloud. You can use any of the big cloud systems. Apple, Google, Amazon, Dropbox, whatever else. It's more about understanding what each has to offer. The reason I may recommend to turn off other syncing options is because Apple recommends to do that. I'll stick with Apple and Google as an example... Both have the ability to sync the directories/folders of the Desktop and Documents. If you have two different cloud systems trying to sync that same information, it can get confused and cause sync errors and possible lost files. So I recommend to pick whatever platform you have that works best for the hardware you have. If a user has all Apple Devices, my recommendation is iCloud. However if a user has a windows PC and an Android phone, their recommendation would be stick with Google. But even if there is a mixture, all cloud solutions are very similar so just use what you're comfortable with and what fits the needs. It's about knowing what you're using and how to use it vs just picking a brand. Question 2: PDF editing. So what kind of editing are we talking about? Do you need to markup up a PDF with annotation? Do you need to merge different PDF files? Do you need to make fillable forms? Do you need to highlight text? Do you need to convert the text and make it editable? Adobe Acrobat is very robust and offers a ton of features that the average user may not use. Preview is the built in App on the Mac that is the default PDF viewer. It has some handy tools built in, but it's not as full featured as Acrobat. So it really comes down on what you're trying to do. For simple things Preview really is amazing, but it's no Acrobat. I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! If this video was helpful and you learned something new, please SUBSCRIBE to my channel if you haven’t already! Great question @Jesús A! So if you signed out from iCloud, it will prompt you different things depending on what you have synced and it will often ask you to either download the content or delete what's on there. The problem is that if you sign out and delete everything, the moment you sign back in, it will just pull everything back down from iCloud that you have there. So really it's a waste of time. In my opinion, it kinda gets hard to delete everything all at once from iCloud. Especially Photos. What is your main goal? I hope that helps! Thanks so much for watching! It helps more than you know and is greatly appreciated! If you know someone who may benefit from this video, feel free to share it along!
