Great video, Juna! A great time saver and Kittl is a great jumping off point for making dynamic designs without having to start from a completely blank slate - plus you can see what's new and popular, but still make your own designs stand out from the POD-ready stuff that's out there. (I'll scream if I see another messy-bun-boss-babe-coffee-addict shirt! That's not POD, that's POS!) I'm excited about the masking tools, too! Juna, I watched your video. It is a good and helpful demonstration. Thanks. I also watched the Kittl video you made with the Kittl employee (I think his name is Drew). In that video, you asked Drew about the sizing at the end at the Export point in the video. He was using 72dpi. You asked him whether it should be 300dpi. He seemed to skirt that question. In this video today, you show us the 72dpi export enlarged on screen. But, I wonder if there is more to it. I seem to recall that the major printing companies all ask for files to be 300dpi when provided to them. So, I am curious if you have done further research (confirming with either Amazon or Redbubble) that 72dpi is not only suitable, but also recommended or preferable. I mean, it may be "acceptable" for POD printing given the equipment they use, or they may prefer to have 300dpi if possible for possibly better quality. In other words, 72dpi might be a "minimum, but we can upscale it automatically" might be their answer. Or maybe it really does not matter at all. I have not yet opened a POD store, still working on designs, and so do not have experience printing on shirts via a POD platform. Please speak to this (or answer below). For example, will you only export to 72dpi from now on for all of your work, and will that be for all platforms? or what? Thanks.
@DetourShirts
@DetourShirts Жыл бұрын
Yeah.... I think 300 is better.. I may have to do a comparison between Kittl at 72 dpi and Affinity designer at 300 dpi and zoom in on both and see what the difference is
@Kittldesign
@Kittldesign Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Sorry if I had not answered a question correctly in a different video. For print on demand, we will always suggest 300 DPI. However, it may be important to understand how DPI works. For example, if Amazon wants you to use a 5400 x 4500 pixel ration (which is already a super massive file size), then there is no need to export 5400 x 4500 at 300 DPI, because it's already the correct DPI that they require. If you exported that size at 300 DPI, it would actually become way larger. Hopefully that makes sense. You will most likely want to go on the higher dimension side of things and then scale down, because it's not possible to scale up most of the time. So if you export a pocket T graphic at 5400 x 4500, upload to your print on demand site, and then scale it down to the correct size, most likely the DPI will turn into something like 800+, because you don't need 5400 x 4500 for the size of a pocket graphic. So this all really depends on the requirements of POD sites. Hope this helps a little bit, and I wish you great luck on your endeavors! Cheers!
@steadmanuhlich6734
@steadmanuhlich6734 Жыл бұрын
@@Kittldesign Hi. I appreciate you responded. However, I think there is still some confusion about the difference between pixel dimensions (such as 4500 x 5400) and the DPI required by a POD platform. Here is what Amazon says: "Your design should be a 300 dpi PNG. Though the image size should be 15 x 18 inches (the printable area of the product),.." Here is what Printful says: "Print file resolution (DPI): again, depends on the product, but should be at least 150 DPI, and no higher than 300-going beyond 300 DPI won’t improve the print quality, just increase file size. Print files for smaller items, like mugs or personalized phone cases, need a DPI higher than 150 because those prints are small and often detailed. We recommend submitting designs for these products with a DPI of 300." So, I think it would be wrong to upload a file that is 4500 x 5400 and only 72 DPI. And I think it would be better (nice) for KITTL to make this clear in tutorial videos and on a FAQ page on KITTL site. I think this is something that would make a good topic for one of your tutorial videos, but before you answer or write your video text, please consider the other platforms (Merch, Redbubble, etc.) and what they say and require. As this comment is already long, I will post a clip from the Redbubble site that is good to see too. (look below for another comment clip). I hope this helps.

@@DetourShirts I posted a few links to some pages from POD sites that address this, and those pages and illustrations could be useful for you if you are going to do a video on this topic. I understand there can be differences of opinion and knowledge, and with so many people jumping into POD design creation/use, I think it would be a good topic for a stand alone video (and could boost your channel views). :) See my comments below in this thread and links.

Alanna, what follows is written in a friendly tone of voice, with the sole intent to share another opinion on this issue. I am not disputing you or your goals. I read the Kittl user Terms & Conditions. In my opinion, Kittl is being more lenient than some other very large/popular sites that sell subscriptions to use their design elements (and many obvious POD oriented designs). And I can understand they (and the designers providing the templates as a community) do not want others to just package and sell their designs, without some limits on how they are used. You might be editing them (changing them), but Kittl has to say something to allow them to pursue/deter others from just copying everything and selling it (packaging it), for downloads elsewhere. Based on what I read from Kittl and from other similar companies, Kittl is trying for some balance.
@awebbdigitals

It's OK I understand what you're saying. I was hoping to ve able to sell digital design in much changed state to those who print offline to mugs etc instead of selling thru pod Co. I certainly understand them not wanting same design for sell digitally as is. Some may think of kittl as same as creative fab or market but it's not as far as selling result as digital product. I don't use canva either because I'm too nervous about their licenses.

I have to say, I am so disappointed with the new direction Kittl has taken. I've been absolutely loving it (I have the Pro version), but I went tonight to look at what's new, and suddenly *very few* trending designs are available at "only" the Pro level. Now you can only access them at the $24/month level. I am so ticked off right now, just can't believe it. This is a huge mistake, IMO. Most people relatively new to POD can't justify paying that much per month for an app (that is one of several used). Sorry, but I am really aggravated!

@@MissMolly3377 I would suggest trying Kittl for a few months and see what you think. Personally, I use both Canva and Kittl (plus Affinity Designer). It would be hard to have to use only one or the other. Canva has such a large selection of graphics and is easy to use. Kittl has great fonts, many cool vintage graphics, and some great design templates. I'm still annoyed about not having access to premium templates with Kittl, but I hope they'll come up with some better option for Pro users.

I I got Creative Fabrica, for the graphics, now, and I was going to use Kittl, because they do have some great features, that Canva doesn't offer, plus the great fonts, while Canva has better graphics/elements. I have a couple of more weeks with Canva Pro, so, hopefully, I will decide, by then. I am learning Photoshop, slowly, but it is difficult to start, with. Thanks for the advice, though, I do appreciate it. If I ever get the hang of Photoshop, I would be fine, but it gets so frustrating. 😂

Juna, during the export phase, when choosing the settings, I am curious about the use of that "Optimize" setting. I have not yet seen that explained by Kittl (in videos or on their site). If you know specifically what that slider does to the image file, please elaborate. Is that something that only applies to PNG files? JPG only files? Should it be used on SVG output at all? Is it "sharpening" the file? Or making it smaller in size somehow? ?? If you know specifics or have a link to an answer please let me know. Thanks.

@Kittldesign
@Kittldesign Жыл бұрын
Hey there! Definitely a good question. We are working on the best way to explain what that feature does and how it works, but in the simplest terms, when you select optimize quality, the render becomes much smoother. Or in other words, the browser takes a bit more time to make sure your design is exported correctly (without the browser just quickly exporting your design as it may often do). This isn't to suggest that you won't get a nice or high resolution file if you don't have it selected. But specifically for PNG and JPEG (raster) downloads, selecting optimize quality smooths out the pixels to make sure the design has no jagged or jitterness to it. (It's not really necessary for PDF or SVG files since those are vector project files). This works very similarly to Adobe Illustrator's Art Optimized feature, which also a bit difficult to explain. Most of the time, for web-based graphics, the regular export setting will suffice since you are inputting the exact dimensions required. But for Print On Demand files you may need downloaded, we always suggest selecting the optimize feature so that you get the highest quality possible. It does not make your design smaller or larger. I suppose "sharpening" is the best way to define it like you have said haha.

When you were changing the colors of the text to orange, the larger words changed to orange, but the smaller words in the middle had a white front with that little shadow background being orange. How did you select the little background shadow was going to be orange without changing the front white text? Is there a way to change both of the colors to a different color than the little shadow to a different color because I could not tell how do you selected which portion to color orange.

@chevlim
@chevlim Жыл бұрын
@@DetourShirts From my understanding, DPI affects how sharp a design will look when printed on a physical product while PPI affects how sharp a design will look on the computer screen. Having a large resolution (e.g. 4500 x 5400) will lead to a high PPI and make the design look really sharp on your computer screen but if it has a low DPI (e.g. 72), it will not look the sharpest when you print it on a shirt. So there is no way to tell if a design will look sharp just by looking at it on the computer screen. A printer will read the DPI value and it will print with varying sharpness based on the value that it is fed with. You can test this (advised from Canva) by creating a design with the same resolution but make two exports with two different DPIs - 30 and 300. Then print both designs on two pieces of paper and put them side by side. All that being said, i have personally done a print test comparing 72 and 300 DPI on an A4 piece of paper. I cannot tell the difference unless i whip out my iphone and take a photo with 3x magnification. This is why I have decided to stick with exporting using Canva even though i know it only exports at 96 DPI instead, because I think few people will buy really large prints from my Redbubble store. Juan, please feel free to let me know if my understanding on this topic is incorrect, love to learn from all your videos. Cheers!
