You can also use powdered food coloring mixed with cheap vodka and airbrush that as well. Micas can be mixed so many different ways. You can mix it into clear nail polish, thin and spray it. If you work with Clay, like I do, you can brush powdered food color on and set it with hair spray. There are tons of places making mica and powdered food colors now too, so it's worth shopping around the web for them. One advantage of powdered food color is they can be mixed to create custom colors. Gel food colors can be thinned some and mixed also. Powdered food color can be applied using makeup brushes that are soft. Eye shadow applicators, like you used here, can be purchased in bulk very cheaply from Amazon, Sally's beauty, the dollar stores, etc. Going to ulta or Sephora is actually more expensive for those. You can also use both mica and powdered food colors in resin molds if you use either a mold release sprayed onto the mold first and then brush in your choice of the colorant, or vegetable shortening. They can be blended in your mold this way as well. I started out life as a baker, now I craft...can you tell? Lol. Just thought I'd share some tips and tricks for anyone out there who cares to try any of these methods. Just please remember a mask when using mica it's not good to breathe it in. PPE is important too lol. Depending on what you're doing, you can also mix either one into clear Elmer's glue, Linseed oil, and a variety of other products to make your own paints.

Nice test, and nice video as usual. Some 5 or 6 years ago I painted a car model using this technique, but the clear I used was 2K (over black primer/surfacer). It worked well, so that's another option for a clear. I got those pigments from a company in the UK (at the time pigments weren't so easily available).

Excellent video as always! Great tips and help for sure!! Gonna use some, most definitely! For colored chromes, recently I've found my favorite way is adding alcohol inks to my Duralumen. Done it now for a few different things (power swords, burgundy armor, etc.) and it's turned out great. Will be putting some uv varnish over to topcoat and protect the inks from UV, and should be good. Tend to do that in general with my alcohol inks now since I've been using them more as a staple anyhow. Decanted some Kamar varnish (thanks for the decanting tips!) For the initial coats, then uv varnish, but have found other varnishes that should do the same. I wonder if that diamond coat is uv protective for the metals? And for the micas, finding some that have actual metal particles vs just mica for metallic pigments is big too I've found. Some will have bigger flakes (mica) than others with the aluminum or other mix like the ones you showed. Definitely some good finds! Just a grab bag lol Apologize for my verbal vomit lol. Hope you heal up quick! Thank you for your time and content, and have a good one!

After watching your video on touching up nub marks on gold kits, I tried the gold nail powder over almost dry gloss black on the yellow parts of my MG Hi-Nu Ver KA and it was spectacular. Best gold finish I’d ever had. So I was going to try mixing it into some clear enamel to see what that’s like, but having my kits and spray space put away for the holidays delayed me. Thanks for this video, I’m definitely going to try it now! We’ll just as soon as I get all set up again

Did you try this with Pledge? And if so, how did it go? I tried Pledge with a metallic powder and I ended up with a kind of coarse surface with a lot of metal flake, as opposed to when I applied the powder directly over a tacky gloss primer that gave me a far smoother metallic surface. I either used too much powder, or not enough! (Or my airbrush is kind of crap. Either way, I'm curious how this might have worked out for other people.)

@@allanlowe9346 Good to know, thanks! Adhesion wasn't a problem for me, but the surface just wasn't good. I wonder if Pledge might be too thin or it could simply be that floor polish isn't a good substitute for actual airbrush products in this case! :)
