Parallel processing is a mixing technique where you duplicate audio signal, add processing (such as compression) to the other signal and leave the other signal non-processed (dry), mix them together and send them to the master out. This technique is particulary useful with drum compression as with it you can apply heavy compression to the drums while retaining their original dynamics. This tutorial I will show you how to set up parallel compression (also known as New York compression) in FL Studio. You can download the project file (and check the non-video version of this tutorial) from here: howtomakeelectr...

Nice work man, I've watched your vids ever since I started producing lol anyway parallel compression is so much easier to understand now after seeing how to use it in Fl Studio. Although I know what it is in general, its hard to understand how to actually apply it to your music when most other compression based tutorials are explained iin other DAW's. Keep it up man!!

Agreed! His tutorials make everything so much easier to understand when shown in FL. He's also very good at explaining things clearly and precisely. Undoubtedly one of the best channels on KZbin!

Nice tutorial man. Very basic so very understandible. Although I wouldnt put the kick in the same subgroup as the snare/hihat.

@SADANMUSIC Hi, there is an automatic plugin delay compensation feature in FL Studio (PDC), but when doing routing like this, you will experience the phasing problem, so in order to deal with it: Drop exactly same set of plugins to the Drums (dry) and NY Comp (wet) channels, but remember to DISABLE the effects in the Drums (dry) track as you dont want the dry signal to be processed with the compression.

About assigning them to the mixer, I like to just select them all at once and just select "starting from here" from link selected channels whenever you select a track in the mixer. Of course, the "assign to a free mixer track" would probably work better if you're working on a song with a ton of drum samples and synths. Just something I wanted to say. :)

@howtomakeemusic Thank you for your reply! Your advice helped partially solved my problem, but even so I think this is a significant lack of FL Studio. Personally for me

routing is sending of both SIGNAL and SOUND while Sidechaining is only Sending the Signal
@lunchpaddle
@lunchpaddle 11 жыл бұрын
rather than sidechaining the mastered/wet/dry channels to the bassline, just sidechain the kick itself from its original position on the mixer. just pick the kick you want to sidechain on the bassline - and use that raw channel to avoid the snare/hats etc getting involved via the processing channels..

If you send Kick, Snare to the group “Drums”, a group of “Drums” to send to the master channel and send to group “NY Comp” and insert a compressor in the group “Drums” and group “NY Comp”, then the delay of signals can be heard as the Phase effect . How to deal with it in FL? In Cubase this is not observed for example.

I get how to route everything now, but I don't understand how to now apply effects to individual drum sounds without the effects doubling up. Like if I add a reverb on the clap, because of the way it's routed, the reverb will get added twice

Dear howtomakeemusic, this may have nothing to do with the tutorial, but I really need your help. Sometimes when I'm compressing drums (e.g Kicks).. After a few tweaks in the compressor, the beginning of the kick drum loop sounds louder than the rest. For example if I have 4 kicks in the step sequencer, the first kick would sound louder than the last 3 for some reason. I'm pretty sure it has something to do with how I'm using the compressor. I hope you read this! Thanks

+TurCoD Maybe you forgot to right click and ''route to this track only''. That's where i went wrong. Otherwhise it will sound weirdly phased and compressed.
