How to use Pay with PlugShare. Why using Pay with PlugShare makes life for EV drivers so easy.

Traveling with an EV comes with some challenges as it is. You have to be able to locate charging station within the range of your electric car and possibly also look for a back-up station in case the one you planned on is out of commission. We'll have a video coming on "How to plan a road trip with an EV". But todays topic focuses on Pay with PlugShare. This makes life a lot easier when traveling and having to use many different brands of chargers from many different providers. Instead of having to open up an account with each charging location provider you can use Pay with PlugShare and only have to provide your information to PlugShare instead of all these providers. Some of these chargers you'll only charge on once or twice anyway so you don't want to open an account with them. We have used Pay with PlugShare during our travels with our electric cars and found it to be a very helpful tool in an "EVers toolbox".
In this video we'll show you how to use pay with PlugShare at a SemaConnect level 2 charger in Seaside OR. We filmed this on the trip to Seaside with our 200'000 mile (322,000 Km) 2013 Tesla Model S 85. In order to charge a Tesla at an J1772 charger you'll need the Tesla provided (came with your Tesla) J1772 to Tesla adapter.

I couldn't set it up because it said I had to enter the vehicle display code which I couldn't see???!!! Was it on my phone?

Hi, It's been a while since I made this video, about 2 years. And I have not been charging at any Pay with PlugShare location for about 8 to 10 month. The PlugShare app has changed a lot since, so it is possible that this is something new. I had it never ask for a vehicle display code. I always only selected the location and then the charger number. Which location were you at? I would like to look it up and see what I can find out.

Do I need to have the charger plugged in for the app to show the PWPS option?

Hi Vanessa, No, don’t need plugged in, you can even just look at the chargers in the app without being there to see if the Pay with Plugshare is available. Unfortunately not all providers do participate. If it does not show in the app then it’s not available. Contact the provider and tell them that you would like Pay with PlugShare. It will not help right then, unfortunately, but maybe next time.

Hi, great video, thank you. Are you able to print out some bill for tax purposes?

That is a good question. In the app it will save your Pay with Plugshare sessions. If you click on the icon at the bottom that says "Me" a menu opens that has a line "Pay with Plugshare", click it and it will show an overview of all the sessions you had. You can click each session and it will give you the same end of session screen you have seen in the video. You could print this screen I guess. Since it is on the Credit Card I don't print anything for Tax purposes. I just categorize right from the statement download in accounting. That said I deduct standard rate for mileage not vehicle operating cost for taxes. This works out better in regards to tax deduction in our case. I'm NOT a Tax professional so check with one for your own situation.😉😀

Hi Domenic, Good question. I assume you can as long as it has a Visa or Mastercard sign on it. But I'm not 100% sure.

So I'm going to post the Comment from "Ron Carguy": Ron Carguy How can you find out in advance which EVSE (chargers) accept Plug Share. I am a member with Plug Share for locating EVSE &. CCS " DC fast chargers".I have accounts with Charge Point, & Evgo, & would like to use Electrify America(EA). Also, I see that you used J-1772 adapter for your Tesla, instead of using a Tesla Destination charger. Will the Plug Share app work with a CCS DC charger for a Chevy Bolt?

Hi Ron, There are a couple ways to see which chargers are accepting Pay with Plugshare. As you click on a charger location the info will open up and towards at the bottom of the station info you can see the Pay with Plugshare Banner if availlable at this location. Another option is to set a "temporary filter" for Pay with Plugshare. There are filters associated with your vehicle but you can add temporary filters. Click the filter icon in the app, then scroll down to Temporary Filters and select "Show Only Pay With Plugshare Locations". Then only PWPS locations that work with your vehicle will show on the map. Electrify America unfortunately does not work with Plugshare, you have to either pay with a Credit Card at the charger or set up an account with EA. Yes I had to use the J1772 to Tesla adapter since there were no Tesla Destination chargers at this place. Also Tesla destination chargers are free, they do not require any payment. The Plugshare app will show pretty much all chargers available for the car you have selected. You can change the selections to fit your needs. If you have a Chevy Bolt selected on Plugshare, it will show DC fast chargers with CCS plugs. Make sure your Bolt has a CCS plug as it was sold as an option from GM. The availability of Pay with Plugshare depends on the provider/owner of the charger not what kind of charger it is. You find mostly J1772 Level 2 chargers but there are also DC fast chargers that accept PWPS. I hope you'll find this Reply since I could not directly reply to your comment.🙂
