*whips out clipboard *whips out Bureau of Standards Pub ASTM E2624-15 *adjusts glasses Well that's true Mr AVE that they use 2 inch fasteners and new grease between runs. That is the universal standard used to insure that all test use the same baseline to testicle different impact guns. IE 3/8, 1/2, 3/4, and 1 inch all use the same test bed for repeatability. * adjusts glasses

rigidity, mass, size of fastener, moment of inertia, friction and some more factors play a huge role in impulse drivers. normal torque wrenches on the others hand only need to combat rigidity and friction maybe they just need to change the testing standards and publish a chart of different size(length and width) fasteners, type of steel and lubrication with achieved torque that at least will be a better reference
@wunderkind56
@wunderkind56 7 жыл бұрын
Yes. Real Tool Reviews doesn't say this the actual torque capability. He uses the Skidmore Wilhelm because that is what he thinks the industry uses to make their "nut busting" torque claims. I think he even has a video where he says "nut busting" torque is marketing BS. But he uses the same procedure for all wrenches so it is a valid benchmark for comparison purposes. At least AvE noticed RTR also gives dynamic results with the digital meter.

Great job and a good demonstration. We use pressure transducers all the time in Automotive Diagnostics. We use them in the tailpipe 4 exhaust pulse diagnosis , we'll use them in the spark plug hole for in cylinder testing , vacuum testing, fuel pressure, transmission Etc. It's nice to be able to see your pressure on a scope instead of just a gauge and log voltage over time.

Also worth mentioning is the frequency response. The type of pressure transducer(s) shown, typically have a conditioning circuit and/or ASIC in the device to provide linearization/scaling (such as the 'live zero') and temperature compensation. This type of signal conditioning can lead to slower response times or a dampened output.

While some of it has to do with marketing wank, it's mainly for repetition. It's a lot easier to polish the washers, use fresh grease and standardize the size than it is to repeat the same level of corrosion, the same thread galling, the same schmoo in the threads and all of those real-world variables. It does give a higher number, but mainly it gives a more consistent number to allow more accurate comparisons between different tools. Some marketing "geniuses" (not naming names here but they're Fraught of Horror) try to throw those numbers out there as if they were real-world numbers when it's really just meant to be a way to compare it to another brand. Your set-up is excellent and you're a genius to use a pressure transducer and an o-smell-oscope to see the actual pressure waves. I deal with these nearly every day for oil and boost pressure logging and it would have taken me a long time to think of using them in the way you just did. I think it would be interesting to see different types of harmonic balancers (and maybe imbalancers, if that's a thing) and see if the oil transducer picks up any spikes. G'day, sir.

awesome vid, I'd love to see you do more with transducers. I work for Cummins as a technician, and our procedure to determine how much compression an engine has isn't a compression test, but measuring blowby with a manometer. I want to build something with a pressure transducer that can measure crankcase pressure, and sync it with an engine position sensor on my oscilloscope to attempt to pinpoint bad cylinders rather than condemning a whole engine, which is what usually happens with the general blowby tests. There's a pressure spec for blow by, but there's also a flow spec. Maybe I could use two transducers across an orifice and calculate flow? I'd love to have a little aluminum project box that displayed pressure and flow but I can't figure out the Arduino code or math. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

You also have to take into acount that the resistive element could be logaritmic and not linear, that whould change the calculations. Connect it into the osciloscope and do a 0 to 600psi sample, save and print the curve with values. That would be you reference chart on the field.

These things are really everywhere. More and more gas stations are starting to utilize pressure transducers for line leak detection. Like stated they rarely do go bad and normally the pigtail and connectors go long before the actual transducer goes out. If you get your hands on one you should do a year down on a mechanical leak detector for people.

You can actually hook those transducers up to a computer mic/line input if you don't have a scope (use a resistor divider and/or potentiometer to bring the voltage down so you don't saturate the line input). If you're not interested in absolute magnitude it works a treat. I used this technique to accurately measure the RPMs of a mechanism (sound cards have a pretty good timebase) and to look for valve sealing problems in an engine. You can also use a cheap audio recorder to take samples in the field for later analysis on a computer. Just make sure it's recording lossless.

In industry pressure transducers/transmitters usually (at least pre-digital systems) used 4-20 mA. This allowed using only 2 wires to the device which would compensate for lead length. I've got half a dozen on my shelf that are worth $10k each that can't be used because we did major environmental testing on them.

I have actually used sockets almost that big. swapping castings from old boilers too new, because the castings contour the round boiler shell the only way to get them off is is to cut the studs off flush with the boiler. a good way to do this is to use an impact to twist the stud right off. they usually shear off right at the boiler.

I know nothing, I am the ”wrong” kind of engineer, but this what I would have done. I would have taken a torsion bar, fixed one end in the vice, attached the gun to the other end (maybe stabilized the rig with a bearing) and measured how many degree the gun can twist the bar. The measuring of angle can be done with a mirror glues to the bar and a laser pointed at the mirror. Following the dot (in the ceiling) and simple trigonometry should give the maximum angle. Love the videos!

hmmm I'm gonna copy and paste here... What say you, AvE? www.tabertransducer.com/transducer-inputoutput Millivolt (mV) Output - Pressure transducers with millivolt output are generally the most economical pressure transducers. They are often called "low-level" transducers because they are unamplified and only contain passive electronics necessary to develop and thermally compensate the low electrical output of the Wheatstone bridge. This also means they tend to be smaller and lighter than voltage or current output transducers. The Full Scale Output (FSO) of a Taber millivolt transducer is typically 30mV, with 10VDC nominal excitation. This is also expressed as an output of 3mV/V, 30mV FSO with 10VDC excitation, or as an output of 3mV per Volt of excitation. Optional FSO range is 0-20mV. *The actual output of these instruments is directly proportional, or ratiometric, to the excitation voltage. This means that if the excitation fluctuates, the output will change proportionally. As a result of this dependence on a steady excitation voltage, regulated power supplies are highly recommended.*

No, as long as the input voltage is between the range on the sensor, the output will still be right, plus or minus the tolerance on the sensor.

What you also have to remember the pitch of the bolts are different. If you where to unwrap the threads and lay them out the larger bolts would have longer threads. A bolt is just a helical wedge. So the longer the threads the less aggressive the wedge angle there by giving you better leverage to creat more clamping force with minimal effort.

The torque kit I worked on had various zero points depending on customer requirements (depending on reversible and non-reversible for example). So this may be true for off the shelf pressure transducers but not for all transducer types. pH transducers calibrated with water and calibrating acid (hydrochloric at a pH of 1) are really weird and drift all over the place without being in contact with an ionic liquid (unless they contain buffer solution in which case they sit at mid-point).

Hello, thanks for the video. I am trying to calibrate Omega PX-319 pressure transducer with omega's wireless voltage data logger. I am not able to figure out a way to do so. Kindly help me with this.

Please do the mA transducers ASAP, I've learnt to work with them by trial and error but I've always felt like there's something that I'm missing!

Would using a zener diode or a voltage regulator be necessary to provide a constant reference voltage level from your battery supplies? Would that effect the accuracy of the results?

For arduino take a look at the ams1115 it's a 16 bit i2c based a2d. good enough for some medium speed data logging, cheaper than dirt, and easier to use than SPI ones.

is there any way, that you know of to use something like the transducer to INJECT a signal into a closed pressure system. I am trying to use the device to find pinhole leaks in refrigerant circuits

Most industry stuff (production line stuff) isn't very high pressure, the crap I work on only goes up to 6psi as they don't need much more than that. True the robots main actuators are running higher but that's on a built in pump and accumulator setup instead of the factory main line

PSIG vs PSIA. I built an arduino tire inflator wherein I had to add some calibration math until I realized I was getting PSIA from the transducer. My primary target is giant tractor tires from 9 psi to 14 psi so I had to settle on STP

Hmmm would be cool to hook one of these up to the water supply and monitor water pressure. If pressure is too low for too long it could mean a leak and could set off an alarm. If you want to get fancy you also have flow sensors at the end of each water source so if any indicate flow it's definitely a leak. That would be pretty skookum.

I've messed with Utility Transducers. Single or 3 phase in, DC out (usually 0-1mA or 4-20mA). WATT and VAR Transducers are interesting. Some allow for reverse power.

I grant you all those points, but that being said, as long as all the guns are tested in the same way, isntnthe one that shows the higher torque still going to be able to do a better job busting that fucking rusted honda crank bolt off? and wouldn't it be rather difficult to come up with a test to consistently test those sort of circumstances? another thought, could that breaker bar you have leaning against the bench be flexing and absorbing some of the impulses too? that might help explain the gap between your results and those they get on the "professional" testers along with the other things you mentioned. Fantastic video as always

The specs are "Max Torque", meaning the maximum torque you can achieve from that particular impact gun. Then using the best setup so that the gun can tighten (or loosen) a bolt to its best ability should be used to test the max torque spec. So I agree, it is less ambiguous and good way to compare impact guns. The so called "dynamic" torque test of skidmore is ambiguous. For once, even though the name sounds like it is going to give the instantaneous highest torque value of the impact impulses, it is actually giving an averaged value. And they don't tell what is inside, what kind of averaging they are using to come up with the resulting "dynamic" torque value it measures. That is less useful because you actually don't know what the conditions and the exact method (averaging but how?) used for the spec it gives.
