I find different DAWs can coexist. They all have slightly different features that some prefer and some don’t (Like many prefer Logic to ProTools etc). This is basically Ableton, but I’ve found Ableton difficult to get a handle on (which all my Ableton friends find ridiculous of course). I also really like the simplicity of Novation’s Ampify studio and Ampify apps, which are compatible with Ableton. I’m mainly a bassist / vocalist who has always struggled with learning DAWs, MIDI, and related technology, so I think there IS a place for all of it, even if some find it redundant. 👍🏽

I asked for this feature when I migrated from NED’s Synclavier w/DtoD to Protools Mix24 in 1997. :0 - If it works similarly, protoolers who compose and create tracks will love grabbing audio clips (call em samples) from linear recorded tracks and throwing them into a sequencer based mode, hopefully instantly playable on a midi keyboard or pad. It’s what so many great mega producers did in the 80s. It’s a really cool workflow. If it works.

This is a great concept, but I cannot imagine why Avid did not use the same key commands and editing conventions as used in the main software. Clicking and dragging a midi note doesn’t play it back or reflect changes. Clicking and dragging to select multiple notes within a range isn’t implemented at all… The record keyboard shortcut doesn’t work, etc. I hope Avid can make this more intuitive for users used to the Pro Tools key commands and conventions.

Hi, thanks for the comments! Some PT keyboard commands cross over (e.g. Zoom) and more will come. To select a range click and hold for a second then drag out selection.

Well it's very much like the toontrack EZdrummer or Superior Drummer, where you bring grooves and beats in and start building the song right there, this sketch is pretty cool and useful

Hi, built-in instruments (Synthcell & Playcell) for V1, which gives unrestricted roundtrip with iPad. Lots of other possibilities in development… :)

Thanks! Yeah good question -- you can record or drop in something that you want to transition across scenes, duplicate it into both scenes then set the start/end points differently for each copy so you get a smooth continuation across. Or...use a Pro Tools track.

Wanted to create loops in 7/4 or 7/8 or 5/4 but can't do that! Kinda lame that it's limited to only 3/4 or 4/4 time signatures. Come on Avid!, open this up for folks in other genre's!

I love this BUT it won’t preview my own .wav loops in the browser at the sketch session tempo. It does conform once a drag it in but not while previewing. Anyone have this problem?

On a computer you can use any track in a Pro Tools session as an input into Sketch so you can use any AAX (not VST) plugin and virtual instrument. That said, I noticed that just having a Sketch window running with an active Output introduces additional latency on audio and instrument tracks. I first noticed it playing my e-drums with Superior where it was instantly noticeable but then found that it was true for audio tracks as well. Hope they can fix this (I reported it through a rep I did the user interview with) because I will definitely use it when they do.

Pro Tools Sketch looks great for sketching ideas but I have never used Pro Tools, so just want to know if there are any limitations with Pro Tools Sketch in Pro Tools Intro and whether I could map my Maschine Jam to Pro Tools Intro, in order to launch scenes, control transport, etc. If this is possible, then it would definitely be worth trying out. MIDI Mappings for Pro Tools seem to be limited when searching online.

Thanks Jason, no limitations on the Pro Tools Intro version of Sketch. No MIDI mapping for clip/scene launching yet…but loads of updates in the works.

Thanks Simon. I can see Pro Tools Sketch becoming the new favourite for live loop performers if MIDI Learn is implemented, due to it's ease of use and neat interface. Next closest product I can think of is Remixlive, which hasn't been updated on PC since 2016 or 2017 and creating your own remix sets on it is way too convoluted vs Pro Tools Sketch.

In Pro Tools Intro we are limited to 8 Audio, 8 MIDI, and 8 Instrument Tracks. Do we have the same limitations with Sketch that comes with Pro Tools Intro? Or can we make all 16 Tracks of the Sketch an Instrument Track, for instance? Thanks

Hi, this is co-installed with the new version of Pro Tools (2023.9) Once you launch Pro Tools 2023.9, when you click on File>Open you'll have the option to open a Pro Tools session or a sketch session

this is amazing simple to understand and utilize i just want to know where is the the drum sequencer ??? its the only thats ever been missing to be honest Groove cell doesnt cut it, and idk if its just on my computer but it even stop working out of no where besides being extremely limited oh maybe a "native" sampler but i got cr8 for now so im good on that behalf !!

I don't think it's interesting. It should be placed on the host like cubase or Ableton as a material library auxiliary function, which can be used for production, so that the protools can be more powerful.
