I used to travel by train quite regularly for last 15 years, maybe with exception for last 1-2 years so maybe something has changed recently. But you could always buy a ticket from train staff. It was just additional fee (like 6 PLN) added and payment accepted in cash only. If you bought ticket on the station where there is no window for tickets, there was no additional fee in train. I remember that sometimes when the queue at the station was long and I knew I would be late I went straight to train and to conductor to ask for selling me ticket. There were also some tricks. So the general rule was "the longer distance your travel the cheaper price per kilometer will be". So for example (please note prices shown are not real, they are just to understand the logic) you paid 20 PLN for 100 kilometrs journey but 25 PLN for 150 kilometers. You could switch trains and this rule still applied, as long as you bought ticket to final destination at your starting point and you use trains of the same company (intercity, polregio, etc.). I remember as a student with 50% discount I traveled for ~25 PLN from Poznań to Polish-Czech border (around 250-300 km) using only polregio trains. Crossing the border was the next trick. So imagine train was starting in Wrocław and final station was Bohumin (first Czech station). So you bought ticket to last Polish station. then when train arrived there, you went to conductor and ask for ticket "to cross the border" ("przejściówka" in Polish). And then in Czech station you bought ticket for further journey. However I'm not sure if this is still the cheapest way. When I was student some ~12 years ago "przejściówka" cost like 2 PLN, however 2-3 years ago without any discount it was 8-10 PLN. Another trick was to buy tickets for weekends. They were valid from Friday 7 PM (I suppose) to Monday 6 AM. For intercity it cost ~80 PLN and you were allowed to travel anywhere and any train (within intercity company) within this time frame. I remember when I was working in Kraków and I was leaving for a weekend to Poznań, my train departed around 6 PM so was buying normal ticket to Częstochowa and weekend ticket as well. Częstochowa was 1 hour from Kraków, so when I arrived to Częstochowa it was just after 7 PM so my weekend ticket was active from there. Last trick I wanted to share was to buy ticket for intercity in advance (not sure if it's still supported). So if you bought a ticket in 1 month advance it could be even 30% or so cheaper. Cheers. [edited] Aaah, there was one more trick. There were discount "Ty i raz, dwa trzy" ("You and one, two, three"). Something like that. I think it was in "polregio" company. Basically 1 ticket was in normal price but next persons you traveled with had discount.

Warsaw public transport Zone 2 is basically outside city limits, so not much use bothering with Zone 2 tickets most of the time 🙂 Plus you can only get outside Zone 1 on the bus (as in go outside city limits to the nearby small towns) and it should be clearily marked where one zone ends and another begins on this display with stops insidethe bus.

is tram, metro en bus service is free for a senior tourist (70 years or above of age) in Warsaw in zone 1 and 2 ?

These tickets are valid for the specifiied amount of time. You can take as many buses / trams / trains as you want in that time :)

There are 30 and 90 day tickets available, but you have to go to one of the many Passenger Service Points (POPs) to get a city card. After the ticket on your card expires you can write a new one on every ticket machine in the city.
