The 'to be' verb is generally omitted in Malay. We do have 'ialah / adalah', however it is also most of the time is not needed in a sentence. For eg. Saya pandai - I am smart. Dia cantik - She is pretty Mereka orang Malaysia - They are Malaysians

Malah..can be used as 'yet more or 'even'' in English. Somewhat similar to the type 2 of 'pun' but it is not used much in Malaysian spoken Malay. I think Indonesian Malay uses 'malah' much in their daily conversation.

We could understand each other maybe 60-70%. There are many similar words with the same meaning however the pronunciations could be slightly different. If you watch an Indonesian sinetron and a Malaysian Malay drama, you could see the difference in pronunciation.
