@TYGMUSICCOMPANY -- Hey, thanks. Why not do both?
@peakdavid14 жыл бұрын
@metesables -- my advice on that is to write the essay first in whatever tense seems to fit and then worry about changing something. If by "book" you mean a literary work, there is a thing called the "literary present." So you would write, "Stephen King presents good and evil in religious terms in his early work Carrie." But always write first, correct second.
@peakdavid14 жыл бұрын
@nltandjonas -- that is correct. The name for this is the "as quoted in" or "as cited in" quotation. Also called quote-within-a-quote or secondary quotation. Use a shortened title to replace the author's name inside parentheses. If the title is an article, put title in quote marks. Otherwise, put title in italics.

i have question. When you write an essay about a book do you do in present tense, if so when you find quotes and try to explain do you also keep in present tense?. Thank you.
@nltandjonas14 жыл бұрын
Question: when you use a quote from an source with NO author or page number and you've already INTRODUCED who said the quote (using a phrase like "Snyder says") do you just use the TITLE of the source as the in-text citation?

Hi David, I found your page/channel while studying for the Clep composition exam. I listened to the 5 paragraph essay and loved the layout and simplicity of the lesson. If I may suggest, there are so many people studying and preparing for a specific exam, like Clep for example. It would be nice to find videos that address each main chapter of the exam. I.e Rhetorical Analysis/ Idioms etc. This video in particular, citing resource material using apa/mla style, is a perfect example of a knowledge base that is tested. Hence, why I'm here! So, keep it up! People are accessing the internet and videos such as this one on a daily basis to help them prepare for exams.

hey David, our instructor points out that the use of words like, that. says, explains and etc., makes your integration weak. you should introduce your quote without using these words. What your take on this? thanks for your time.
@peakdavid9 жыл бұрын
mr thanks Did instructor explain WHY those words make integration weak? Did instructor provide alternate ways? Did instructor explain that different disciplines integrate quotes in different ways? Beware of anyone who makes sweeping generalizations. The idea is to avoid "dropped quotations." However you do that can vary widely.

Yes, otherwise the quote may not be integrated fully into your own writing, but would lie on top of the paragraph like an oil spill.
