@@peakdavid Sir, sincerely, thanks you so much for your great videos. We still need some help, I hope you could do couple of videos about: building up academic writing skills in general from scratch, how to summarize a journal article before starting writing a Literature review, how to take notes during a lecture, how to read faster, how to scan and skim through our readings, how to summarize .. etc. We as international students didn't learn such skills properly in our home countries, and we do suffer once we get such assignments. The way you teach make things extremely simple and easy. I hope you could read my comment. Thank you very much once again, we do really appreciate it thank you sir. :)

Parts of Critique 1) Introduction - Introduce the author and title of the work. - State the author's main point ("take away") - State overall evaluation of the work (1-2 sentences) - Add background info for the reader, set the stage. 2)Summary Entire work or section of it. Written objectively to relate: 1)Author's overall point 2)Suppor provided for the overall point The goal of a summary (abstract): Provides author's thesis and main point untainted by opinion 3)Evaluation Criteria Accuracy of information Definition of key terms (or lack thereof) Hidden assumptions Clarity of language Fairness Logic and organization Common fallacies: name-calling, hasty generalizations, over-simplifications, emotional language 4) Response Where do I agree or disagree? What does the author get right or wrong? What ultimate merit/use does this work have? Would I recommend this work as a credible research source? Consider your response section a miniature essay. Your thesis is your opinion of the work. Your main points in this section support the view expressed in your thesis. 5)Conclusion Remind the audience of the overall importance of the topic Combine your rating with a personal response to focus on overall strengths and weaknesses. State what you believe is the ultimate success of the work.

All the points typed out. 1. A critique is an evaluation 2. Parts of a critique a. Introduction: i. Introduce author and title of work ii. State the author’s main point (take-way) iii. State in 1 to 2 sentences of your overall evaluation of the work. iv. Background info the reader needs to understand the work b. Summary i. Entire work or section of it whichever you are critiquing ii. Written objectively to relate: 1. Author’s overall point (takeaway) 2. Support provided for the overall point iii. Language written in third person and has none of your own ideas iv. Goal of summary (abstract) is to provide author’s thesis and main point without detecting any of your own opinion c. Evaluation (this is where you become a judge) i. Accuracy of information ii. Definition of key terms (or lack thereof) iii. Hidden assumptions iv. Clarity of language v. Fairness vi. Logic and organization (flow). Are there gaps? vii. Common fallacies 1. Name-calling, hasty generalization, over-simplification, substituting emotional language, black/white & either/or fallacy, bandwagon appeal d. Response: This is like a miniature essay. Your thesis is your opinion of the work. Your main points in this section support the opinion expressed in your thesis. i. What I agree or disagree with? ii. What does the author get right or wrong? iii. What ultimate merit/use does this work have? (a lot, some, a little, none) iv. Would I recommend this work as a credible research source? Should be avoided in your research. v. Use outside sources to backup your point in this section. e. Conclusion - doesn’t need to be long i. Remind audience of overall importance of the work ii. Combine your rating with personal response to focus on overall strengths and weaknesses of the work. iii. Use your ratings of strengths and weakness to state what you believe is the ultimate success of the work.

Jill--Thanks for your kind words. You maybe give me too much credit for your own abilities to learn and then apply that learning to your own writing. Good luck!

For a 2nd year college like me, I now have a good grasp of writing a critique and I'm quite motivated to make one. I have 1 day to make a critique, I hope I can make it until the deadline for my school requirement.

You can write one in a few hours. Just follow the formula in the video.
