Hi everyone! I'm posting something different today as part of a summer series I'm calling The Beginner's Guide which I'll be posting sporadically throughout the summer. This is not the typical starting point for a series like that, but it's a great topic for both beginners and veterans alike. Get better at using the Ravelry search filter by the end of this video or your money back. 😎 (Kidding. It's free to watch. 😉) Enjoy!

Hi Tayler: one feature that I like on Ravelry, even as an experienced knitter, is when we look at projects made with a pattern, we can target the ones that were tagged as helpful by other Ravelers, they are marked with a 🛟 symbol. You can even filter the projects to only see Helpful posts. Not all of those with the tag have something useful to say but often they do mention things that are good to know before casting on. It's also useful if we're having issues with a pattern, we can read how others dealt with a particular issue.

❤Thank you, Taylor! This is a great video. You broke down the Ravelry puzzle very well. I have dabble in Ravelry. You gave me a more methodical way of using Ravelry that I appreciate. I get overwhelmed by too many options, so you really helped this granny out. Now stand back everyone, I have tools!😅

I wish my grandma would have lived to see Ravelry (or even use a computer). Or I wish I'd seen this when I was a spanking new knitter. I had to learn on the fly, and while Ravelry is pretty user-friendly (gets better all the time), this really ups the game and gives power to the newbie. Thanks for sharing!

Thanks for this video, Taylor!! Its great for beginners and experienced! Ravelry is a big database. It will be great to see videos, on following designers, threads, when they have KAL, and you have to include your picture, whether from a phone or desktop. Many people dont join because they can’t do all those things!! A good learnings for the summer.

I love the projects page! I like to see how other peoples projects turned out, if they’re using a brand of yarn I like, and especially what colors look best with the project. I recently took an intro to Fair Isle class after never doing ANY color work beyond choosing a variegated yarn. Revelry’s project page was INVALUABLE for choosing SIX colors that would look good together. Looking at others projects made me realize how important contrast was going to be in that project.

I am currently working on my Master's in Library and Information Science and I used Ravelry as a topic about paper about metadata once. It's a REALLY good example of how online databases use embedded metadata to make their database easier to search. I often wonder if the person who made it is a cataloging librarian.

Excellent Ravelry info. I've just been learning bits and pieces. The one thing I need is info on message. I don't know if there's a place to see new message. And right now till I get tablet I use mobile site. When I start knitting definitely BIG screen. 😥Thanks for sharing.
@annfearon2107
@annfearon2107 Жыл бұрын
A quick tip to allay frustration for tablet users: when you type in the search box, don’t click the “search” button on your tablet’s pop-up keyboard. Instead, click the magnifying glass icon within the ravelry search box. This will prevent spell-check messing with what you typed in. (Your tablet’s spell-check doesn’t recognize some crafting terms, and especially pattern names, yarn names etc. It will substitute a close-but-no-cigar word and you will get a message saying “nothing matched your search”.)

Great info! Ravelry can be a tremendous resource… I use it mostly for pattern searches and cataloging my own projects. In one of my Ravelry project pages a yarn company saw that I was unhappy with their yarn - the dye lots matched but the yarn didn’t - so the company contacted me through Ravelry and sent me replacement yarn. Yay for Ravelry! 🎉

One of the first things I choose is “has picture”. I don’t like patterns without pictures and I don’t think I’ve ever chosen one without them. I’ve been using Ravelry for years, and the Advanced Search is generally the first place I go. Never look at a pattern and say I can’t do that. When we all began our knitting journey we learned new stitches by choosing a pattern that we would like to own. Then when we came to a new stitch either the designer of the pattern will offer a tutorial or you can find almost every stitch you’ll ever need on you tube videos. Also on every pattern page on Ravelry there is a box on the right hand side of the page that says About this pattern and it will have ratings from other knitters about how difficult the pattern is. When I was a beginner of course I wouldn’t try a pattern that was listed with a extremely difficult rating. You’ll know what you can do. Each time you choose your next pattern look for one with a different stitch pattern and pretty soon you’ll have most all of them in your back pocket. Happy knitting. ❤️

You can absolutely knit a sweater. In fact, if you’ve been a viewer of mine for any length of time, you know that I’m in your corner in that regard. The point here is that if you’re just starting out, allowing yourself some projects that come off the needles more quickly will help build your motivational momentum. If you’ve made even one pair of socks, you’re ready for a sweater. Also, don’t take advice like this as a prescription. It’s not. It’s just advice. If it fits, use it. If it doesn’t and you know that you’re ready to move beyond the advice, do it. It’s your world. We just live in it. ❤️

I love using Ravelry. I've gotten to the point where I'm keeping my records up to date when it comes to my stash collection, including what I use for projects. I also add information about my projects and rate everything so the database takes my vote into account. There needs to be a video showing people how to list their stash correctly using the yarn database. I'm also someone who gets a lot of pleasure going down the rabbit hole looking for patterns that don't show up in these lists. These are the patterns that have not got added tags and no projects with ratings yet to be able to come up in the selections. I love finding patterns that deserve some attention and putting up a first project with ratings and seeing it start being seen. There are so many patterns. While making a lot of selections, particularly using popular and free options, is great for the beginner, I also encourage people to simply enjoy scrolling through pages with simple selections like "knitting" "crochet" "free" just to look at pictures and get a feel for what they are drawn to and how to use the advanced search option. New people often need to know the "Advanced Search" option does not mean it is going to require advanced technical skills. That it simply provides the lists, for options a crafter can choose to tick off to make finding specific things easier. During the last year I have become aware there are people boycotting Ravelry for some reason, though no one has yet made it clear to me why. I'm not sure why anyone would do this as Ravelry is a tool, not a person, and thus like any tool the outcome depends on how people use it. I think it is a very useful tool and not to be dismissed simply because someone has a burr in their fur over something, but I've been curious to know what that burr is. Also, I couldn't help but notice you have 684 unread messages on your Ravelry page. This tells me it is not the best way to get in contact with you as either 1. You don't read your Raverly messages, or 2. You get so many messages most messages would only be another that gets lost in the masses.

for newbies, even if you enter "socks" (as you first did), all of the filters appear on the left and you can choose your filters from there (without having to go back to the Patterns page and clicking on the Advanced Search link, but they possibly might appear in a different order) My favourite feature is the "People who like this pattern also like..." link on a pattern page (sometimes doesn't show if the pattern has recently been added) right at the bottom of the right column I've found that searching in patterns will often bring up patterns that seem unrelated (sometimes the term is in the designer's name, I haven't checked but it might also be in a tag pr attribute used; possibly also sock-weight yarn). aaand...nice to see a pattern from the new issue of Knitty there (Megadahlia, I'm looking at you, lol)

If/when I finish a project and complete my info for said project online (as you saw, what other people did with that project) - is that info easy to fill out? How does it get cross referenced/tagged? Not sure if this is worth noting in an upcoming video or if it's self-explanatory (I haven't checked yet because I don't have a finished project).
