HOW TO | Use Roku player with Universal Remote

UPDATE: In the video I only tried one code (2014) and it worked well for me, but there are three codes that could work with ROKU: 2014, 4395, 0903. Try the other two if 2014 does not work. In addition, this remote only works on the Roku devices that use IR (infrared) technology for their remote controls. Some Roku models use "WiFi Direct" and IR for their remotes. Unfortunately, some Roku devices only support WiFi Direct remote technology and this IR remote will not work on those. Therefore, this remote does not work on the following Roku models: 3400, 3420, 3500, 3600, 3800, 3810.
I recently bought a Roku 2 from eBay and it didn't come with a remote control. I read the reviews for the aftermarket Roku remotes and there were many unhappy customers. So I bought a Universal Remote to see if it could work with my Roku. This remote should work with all Roku players that use IR (infared) technology, you can verify if yours uses IR here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roku

Idk if your going to see this, but I have this exact remote in the silver color and nothing will work. I tried every code I tried using the codes with tv, cable,dvd, and aux and it’s just not working. I followed the steps too : I held set up until the power button was red then I pressed either tv, cable, dvd, or aux, and then put it in the code(s). And then I wait for it to turn on and nothing. I bought this exact same remote from the link you provided. I was unable to get it to connect to my roku stick (model 3800x). I tried the automatic code method, the manual code method inputing 2014 4395 and 0903. I then tried the option where you point the remote at your device, then press 1 see how many times it blinks (repeat with 2 3 and 4) and the code that I was given was 0903 which is indeed one of the roku codes. I tried to input it manually again and nothing. Very frustrated.... =(

Sorry to hear about your issue. I looked up some info on your Roku model here: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roku I found that your Roku model does not support IR (infrared) technology, which is the technology that this remote control uses to communicate. Your Roku only uses WiFi Direct. I wonder if maybe your remote will function with an app on your phone. I'm setting a bunch of things up right now as well, and a couple of times have run into articles pointing out that the stick versions of Roku aren't really supported by universal remotes, but that the other style of players is. Then again, this morning I replaced a 30-year-old CRT TV with about a 12-year-old flat screen and tried to use about an 8-year-old Roku stick on it. It groans when loading a channel - and some like Shudder, Tubi, etc., it just can't support any more, but it can still play the big ones like YT, Netflix, Hulu, Prime and Vudu. And, of course, rather than buy a new replacement, I'm ordering a 4-year-old Roku model off of eBay. I don't have 4K TVs so I don't really need a 4K streamer. Most of us can't actually see in 4K anyway, so I don't feel much of a loss there. 🤣

@@cobbler88 Congrats on your upgrades! The untrained eye can't distinguish 4k from 1080p. There's not even a lot of 4k content out there just yet. For example, even the 2021 Nintendo switch only supports 1080p. I upgrade slower than when I was younger because I don't have the money now that I have kids 😆

@@ChavezDIY Eventually, the tech will leave things obsolete regardless of what you have. My internet wi-fi hotspot comes from my phone, and the demands placed by 4K streaming require more out of a signal. A lot of those technologies throttle themselves down when they see what they have to work with, but since I'm not using anything capable of showing anything in 4K, I'd rather spend $17 now. I can always spend $30-$40 a few years down the line. Now to see if my 30-year-old Sega plays as well with the new TV as the old CRT one. I think I bought both the same day when i was in the Army.

The codes that I shared for this video are only for ROKU standalone devices. The TCL TV with Roku installed will require the TCL TV code. Did you look up the TCL TV code in the manual and try that?

It's hard to say what's the problem, but try a different code. In the video description I listed another code you can try. Program the remote with the other code and see if that works.

I found a way with a Samsung smart TV remote (the small controller), it did the job for me, hope it helps someone else. Press the Home button on your TV remote to access the Home Screen. Using the directional pad on the remote, navigate to Source. When the selector is placed over Source, the Source menu will appear. Press UP on the directional pad to access Universal Remote, and then select Universal Remote on the Source screen. Next, select Start and make sure the device you want to connect is turned on. When your desired device displays, select it. Follow the on-screen instructions to complete the setup and register the device. The instructions may vary, depending on the device type selected.

There are different model versions of the Roku express. Look up your specific model on this table en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roku If your Roku supports "IR" in the remote column, then it should work with this remote. If your Roku uses "WiFi direct", you can download a Roku remote app in the apple or android app store and use that as your remote.

You don't have to use the DVD button, you can use any of the other buttons (tv, cable, or aux). I used the DVD button because I wanted to reserve the "TV" button for controlling the TV functions. But you do need to have the same universal remote that I used in the video for it to work. There is a link to it in the description of the video. This will not work with other universal remotes.

Which Roku device do you have? Are you using the same remote in the video? In the video description mention that it doesn't work with some devices that don't use IR technology. This code also does not work for the ROKU TVs, that would be a different code.

You don't need wifi to pair the remote to the ROKU. This remote doesn't work with all ROKU devices, I mention this in the video description. If you are referring to whether the ROKU device needs WiFi to operate, I think certain models have ethernet ports in addition to WiFi.

I don't remember if volume/mute/power work. This video is several years old and I no longer have these devices. Maybe someone else can shed some light on that.
