3D Camera tracking is one of the most important elements needed for a good composite and Fusion has a really stinking good 3d camera tracker. In this in depth Fusion tutorial we go over everything you need to know to get totally rock solid tracks for your next VFX masterpiece.

Hi, great tutorial. Just one thing I'm struggeling with. Let's say I want to add some snow footage as an overlay to the 3d tracked footage. I want it to follow the movement of the camera. How do I turn this snow footage into 3d layer like I can do in after effects ?

I believe you skipped over one important aspect, which is the correlation between focal length and crop factor. So there's a 12-35 mm M43 lens wich corresponds to 24-70 full frame. Taking into account the camera presets, do you have to type in the 12mm or 24mm? Or putting it the other way around: Who is supposed to do the math, you or the machine?
@nikolasdove
@nikolasdove 2 жыл бұрын
I know this comment is old but I think I have an answer: Lenses and camera bodies / sensor sizes are two very different physical objects. So the focal length of a lens you buy for your camera isn't going to change depending on the camera body you buy. Imputing the image sensor size after the focal length will then do the math as to how much the camera is utilizing said focal length based on the image sensor size that is available to take in the final image. That's why it's cropped sensor, because it is reduced to it's standard size. A lens is a lens no matter what, but different cameras have different sized canvases on the inside to take in what is coming through. Focal length mm does math with an image sensors mm size. That's just my theory, I can't explain it more than that, but this makes the most sense to me and I've seen these kind of camera settings in 3D programs outside of Fusion so, in short, the machine does the math based on a camera and light physics algorithm.

This was a great one! I would assume these procedures hold if you are looking to comp in a 3d model or stock footage like explosions or flames? With 3d model and a 3d camera solve, that would allow the model to appear correctly from various angles, correct? Thanks!

Thanks for the tutorial. I have shot some footage on a green screen with a moving camera. I need to have a motion track for the background so it matches the movement in the actual footage I have filmed. I have tried to use the Camera Tracker in fusion for the main clip I filmed, so I could then take the data and pop it on the background which then would match the same movement. Is this possible, and if so how do I do it? I have tried to copy and paste the nodes from Fusion, this did not work, and I tried to copy the first clip and past attributes, that did not work either.

Yeah, cool. Unfortunately this tracker guy is not available in the free version 🙈. I am just hassling between purchasing DR Studio or a BMPCC4K 😍, which comes with a DR Studio license. The only problem I have with the BMPCC4K is the form factor. I am hardcore Ronin-S user and BMPCC4K can - caused by wide form factor - not balanced on the Ronin-S without hardware hack 😝 (and I really don't like such things).

We tried to replace something on the car. But the camera movement AND the moving object was too complicated for me...any ideas how to in Fusion?

The camera tracker has 2 outputs (the grey squares) make sure you are connecting the 3d output to the merge 3d and not the 2d output. Hovering over the output will tell you which one it is. The lens distortion in this tutorial is optional. You don't have to use it.

I would like to see a guide on that in AE. This guide is an advanced tutorial for a complex scene. Most steps can be left out, if you want a basic result in a simple scene. There are also other ways to do simpler tracking, with "a few clicks". Fusion can do more complex scenes than AE can and has been used in many blockbuster movies. But it's not as easy to use as AE, for the same reasons. It has been the go-to tool for complex composition, along with Nuke and alike software.
