How to use the BMW Drive Recorder - BMW How-To

Learn in this video how to use the optional BMW Drive Recorder to save up to 10 short video recordings of the vehicle environment in order to document for example traffic conditions or an accident.
It is available in vehicles with BMW Operating System 7 produced from July '19 with the optional equipment BMW Drive Recorder and the Surround View cameras from the optional equipment Parking Assistant Plus.
Find the BMW Drive Recorder by going to “APPS”, “Installed apps”, “Drive Recorder”. To activate the BMW Drive Recorder for the first time, you have to accept the Legal disclaimer. When selecting “Settings” you will also find a setup assistant that you can access anytime. Please check the box “Recording allowed” to enable the Drive Recorder. Select the recording length before the trigger with a maximum of 20 seconds, the same can be done for “After trigger”. At “Camera selection” you can select your preferred cameras used for recording. Select the preferred “Recording Type”. Manually means you can start the recording in the app, with the Widget on your Home Screen or by long pressing the Panorama View button. Automatically means that the recording starts automatically if the vehicle sensors detect an accident situation. In the BMW Drive Recorder app click on ‘Saved recordings’ to find your recordings with additional information on date and time and with a preview of your recorded situation. Saved videos can be played, exported and deleted. Depending on your country, exported videos also contain additional data of your recording, like position and velocity. For your own safety, the recording is only shown on the Central Information Display when the vehicle is moving slower than 5 km/h.

Its pretty good features, a lot of ppl look at waze or didn't pay attention on the road hit my cars,with this evidence can claims third party insurance straight away.But the questions is my country malaysia BMW some models dont equip with surround view camera due to price rationalized.At least they sell dashcam front and rear need to spend another money 🙂🙂🙂🙂🙂.

Super happy with this feature. I was just in a minor fender bender where I was completely stopped and someone rear-ended me (again). I have been in the position in the past where I was not at fault and the other driver came up with a bogus explanation as to why it was my fault (the most extreme case was when I was stationary for several seconds and then was rear-ended buy a big-rig going 50 mph/80kmph while I was stopped, and they claimed I stopped short ... thankfully my family and I walked away with minor injuries...). As such, I am always worried about dealing with insurance companies. Having the video and the associated metadata in this latest [minor] example leaves me confident that I can show I was not at fault. :)

So BMW drive recorder covers front and back? That is great as i think citreon connected cam only covers front although citreon can record longer clips like road trips i believe, which i understand BMW is short clips only?

@BMW: Why not set off a loud beep signal (and record) when a this system detects motion too close to bumpers/doors of the parked BMW? It would save on insurance because lots of (older/careless) drivers still use their bumper to "bump".

Is there a roadmap for this being available as a Security/Parking feature? I'd much rather buy this service using the in-built vehicle cameras/software than buy a separate dashcam that I have to setup/maintain (and looks ugly).

Unfortunately, when the parking assist is started, it doesn't record through all the cameras like it normally does :/ ... so keep in mind that you can't rely too much on the records

It’s in a wired situation when I recently got T boned the cannot get into the car to get the recording. The other driver claim he had a green light and is lying. Luckily I had another dash cam that can download the video wirelessly. Always have a backup for such a critical system!

I dont know abt iDrive 7 but for 8 it gives you the option to record manually till the storage on an external media is full, but you have to have the drive recorder app open if not it stops

Hey BMW, I have a concern regarding this feature. It's an awesome feature and I've been using it since I purchased it for my 330i. Does changing the different cameras affect the automatic recording as well. I wanted to use only the front camera for manual recording which I can easily do, but I'm afraid when I change the setting, the automatic recording might only use the front camera. Let's say someones hits me from behind or sides, will all the 4 cameras catch it or just the camera selected. Asking only for automatic function since that is more important than just recording for fun.

@@talkandplay IKR. Fun fact, someone did hit me but from the front and the cameras captured it. Sadly, the car was a total loss though. I ordered a 2022 M440i xDrive Gran Coupe in October and it will be delivered in March sometime. This is the only car in my price range that comes with that Parking Assistance package feature and is a 4 door non SUV vehicle because of the chip shortage I guess. Patiently waiting for it. But the question still remains unanswered @BMW. I'm a 2 time customer now. My first car was a 330i and the next one will be M440i. Please answer it 🙂.
