Three hours talking about an amp and all it is capable of doing. Maybe it's too much amp for you? Maybe single volume, gain and tone knobs are better for you? 😆I've played for 40 years and I am appreciative of anyone who will put in the time to cover the ins and outs and capabilities of a modeling amp like this.

Amazing good indepth video about this amp. I have a MKII Artist. The ability of this amp to mimic about any amp and sound is real. When you consider this with the Boss pedals it offers makes this a bargain not just for new players, but any player. By the way, you can also connect it to any other amp in stereo, you don't need another Katana. I probably would have been happy with the 50w, but based on me loving combos with knobs on the front I went full in. No regrets. This amp also takes any pedal very well. I'm waiting for the next generation of it and well purchase it immediately. Thanks for letting everyone know how addaptive this amp is. =)

One thing I would like to point out, if nobody has yet. When you’re talking about the presets sounding very thin, one of the things you have to keep in mind is you did scoop out the majority of the meds. Guitars are a mid range driven instrument so scooping that much of the mid range out definitely thins out the tone. Totally understand if that’s the sound that you’re going for, like that 80s hair metal sound, dime bag, Darrell sound. That works perfectly for that, but the flipside is that it makes your tone sound thin.certainly not criticizing. Just wanted to point that out. The more you will make the tone sound fuller.

Hi, I'm new to this so I have a quick question.. If I connect the KATANA to my computer, can I make the sound from the guitar only come out of my headphones without the KATANA speaker? Thank you😀
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore Жыл бұрын
It depends on how you set it up. If you have a USB audio interface you can I run a cable from the Rec/Phones out output to your USB interface. If you are recording through USB cable, you'll have to plug the headphones into the amp. It also might depend on the DAW you're using because sometimes you can have separate input/output devices and you may be able to configure the output from the computer. The problem there is the amp speaker will still be active, but you can just plug a cable into the rec/phones jack and still get sound through the computer USB. I think I made all of that sound a lot more complicated than it is.

In case you are interested: Flange Flanger The ‘ang’ is pronounced like Angela ang in English he’s actually rather strange and has a number of different possible pronunciations with the long and short, a sound and hard and soft G sound Of course there’s anger stranger. Language, Orange to name a few, but as the root of this word is flange, it is known as a flange-er . I don’t care though. You can call it Flanger as much as you want but this video was helpful for me in navigating the interface so I figured I’d offer some instruction in return

Thanks for making this video! It's inspired me to dig deeper into my 100W Mk.II. I bought it a little while ago, but I've been using a different amp that's already available where I'm reheasing, so I've never got to grips with the Katana. Now with the threat of playing some gigs looming, I reckon it's high time to dust it off again. Your detailed explanation is a real eye-opener as to just how much it's capable of!

Keep digging and check out some of my tone tutorials. Those might help you with working with individual effects and controls. Work with the Parametric EQ to really dial in a wake it up. It's a lot to take in and quite honestly, I didn't really start deep diving into it until I owned it for a couple years either. I would just load tones and make a few changes. Thanks for watching and I'm glad it helps.

What Boss really needs to do, is know the difference between FIRMWARE Updates, and SOFTWARE Updates. Firmware is what's updated in the amplifier, and that is what people need to know. It took me 45min to go through, and decipher the damn thing. I'm not yelling at you, I'm just frustrated.

I've just finished watching the first section of this video and I'm very impressed with the tutorial. The Artist offers so much, but it takes time to learn and experiment with different tones and settings. I have an Orange 100 watt Super Crush head and 2x12 cabinet as my primary rig, but I wanted to get another amp with built effects and foot switch to make it easier to load in and out. I chose the Katana MK II Artist, but it's taken a good deal of time to find out all this amp has to offer. Scott, I really appreciate that you made this video. You've saved me a great deal of time. Thank you.

*Tonight, I plugged my Katana into the computer and after nearly 3 years, discovered why I thought it was an overrated POS lol. All the brilliant features can't be accessed using the manual controls, and I bought it used so I wasn't aware.* Don't get me wrong, it's *definitely* overrated for someone that plays at my level, but it was being regarded as one of the worst amps I have ever owned until about an hour ago. Even further with that said, there are still much better options for a little less money. *You'll get more out of a good floor modeler and something like my other amp the Gamma G50 than the Boss.* More amps, more pedals, more effects, accessibility without needing a PC and a noise gate.
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore 10 ай бұрын
You're comparing the Katana to Gamma G50?
@JonDeth
@JonDeth 10 ай бұрын
@@Guitarnivore yes. I have at least 10 rigs, some high end and expensive, some budget ended, and a formal college education in electrical/electronics engineering. I don't actually need to buy gear at this point, but ATM, it's more convenient until I get my electronics lab setback up. The Boss is good, but the inability to access the digital emulation for pedals, equalizers and time/depth based effects without a PC is poor engineering. The amp run exclusively at the panel is one of the worst amps I have ever owned, and not just in function but tone and texture. With access to the entirety of functions through PC, it's in fact a good amp, but still not great let alone amazing as it's promoted. The G50 with a Valeton GP100 will do tremendously more for less money, and do it better. The G50 at the panel lets you navigate a high performance EQ, gain voicings and gets louder without hardware and speaker distortion the Katana goes into when cranked, especially for a deeply scooped tone. Something like a GP100, or even a floor emulator FX unit from 10 and 15 years ago does more, and you can access the full range of functions anywhere you go. I can access pedals, EQ, modulation, *noise gates,* boosters, wahs etc., and even have an expression pedal. Although the Boss is a great little amp, it's short comings at the factory new price tag makes it very crude, and highly overrated by intermediate and novice musicians. I bought my Katana for $180 in "like new" condition, and if I were a beginner, that would have been a great deal. I also see the heads go for a little over $300 with shipping used, and you can get a Peavey all tube head for the same price used, working and it's even from Reverb, MusiciansFriend etc. As a stand alone amp, the G50 brand new was $150 to my front door on sale with an extended warranty even covering death by musician fault, so all across the board, it's just a *much* better amp for the money.

Thank you very much for such very comprehensive review of this amp. Initially I thought it was too long, but as soon as I follow it up, yes, it is very good. One thing that I had problem with this Boss-MKII Artist is when using the looper pedal, we must ensure that there is one button that must be switched on, otherwise the looper pedal is useless. In fact, once I was thinking to by a simpler amp such as Fender Champion 40. Thank you very much for such comprehensive work and cheers from Indonesia.

I've noticed this with my Boss RC-5 looper pedal when I use it with my xsonic airstep kat... I get no sound on the app and have to unplug the looper and turn it on and off then the amp works again... any idea what's going on? I have my Send/Return set ON and in series Edit: Ok so I've only been playing for like 7/months... most of those on a practice kit amp and a few months on a THR10II. Anyway, I just realized I had the SEND/RETRUN on my Boss RC-5 looper pedal hooked up backwards? Whoops, I can only imagine that was the problem. I had it working with just the amp and looper, but I just got my airstep Kat switch (also the GAFC-EX switch) so hopefully they can all work together. I don't know if I wasted money on the GAFC-EX or there's a way to utilize it with the KAT and my Looper pedal somehow. To think I almost got the Boss RC-600... glad I realized I didn't know what I was doing and went simpler Lol

I hate my katana. After a few years the distortion has degraded and sounds like pure ass. Not a single guide has helped make it have a decent metal distortion. I regret not trying it out first before buying. I like the clean tones I can get but I play more aggressive styles and this thing just sucks. Shouldn't have to plug an amp into a PC to unlock it's best tones. A good amp just sounds good from the start to give you a good foundation.

He confusion around the issue of blinking lights and BankA / BankB selection is based around the fact that you are using the line out to get your sound for you and the video and the amp is switched to ‘ Standby’ all the way through . Any of the selected CH1 to CH4 plus the panel button itself will blink at the rapid rate because the amp is in standby mode. Normally , when selected , the CH1-4 are steady lights , and the panel light is steady for ‘ panel’ , off for bank A , and slow blink for bank B . Great video though , thanks for the effort.

I know this guide is older but I just ordered an MK2 artist and with this tutorial I am beyond excited to start tinkering with this platform. I’ve always been a “tube amp or bust” person. But as I don’t play live anymore, it was just to much amp for bedroom/home applications. I sold my Tubemeister 18 and most of my pedal board(although I sometimes feel regret for the pedals, this amp packs a LOT of pedals in the software that I think I’ll be content for awhile). Thanks for the detailed tutorial on the software. I feel that the purchase is the best bang for you buck in terms of what you get with this. My biggest question, do you feel with having the GA-FX foot switch is enough to keep your from “needing” other pedals, or do you still find you like the adjustability/having a pedal board more then using the built in FX?
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore 2 ай бұрын
Thanks! As a fellow bedroom player, I feel that the GA-FC or the XSonic Airstep is enough, unless there are other FX pedals that you particularly like. I do have another pedal board that I use with other amps, but 99% of the time the onboard FX are more than enough. Have fun with it.

Thanks for the video, it's great! I have a MK-II 50 and i was wondering if it's ok to plug from the REC/OUT to a mixer input? If it's not, do i have other possibilities to go through a mixer?
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore 7 ай бұрын
You absolutely can, but when you do that it shuts off the speaker and you'll have to monitor from the mixer. If you still want to hear through the speaker, you need a line out and the 50 doesn't have that. I use Rec out into a DI and then into my interface.

@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore 10 ай бұрын
The Artist head has a lot more features for outputs and can accommodate a few different ohm cabinets, whereas the Mk2 head can only do 8 ohm (or higher) cabinets. You can also connect more than one cabinet to the artist if I'm not mistaken. Otherwise, the head has all of the same features inside of Tone Studio that the Artist has. If you plan on connecting a computer to it to play with Tone Studio and play around at home, I think the MK2 head is more than sufficient. Check out the back of the artist head on Sweetwater and the extra specs and then decide if you really need all that. Thanks.

Great video dude. I've got a question unrelated to the katana specifically but I noticed this in your video as well. When you switch between effects, mostly on the distortions, there's always a background hiss that is very anoying to me. Can you explain the origin of that?
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore 2 ай бұрын
With any high gain setting, you're going to get a slight hissing sound like that without some kind a noise suppressor because of the boost in the signal. I probably didn't have the noise suppressor on when I was demoing the boosts. However, it also could have been noise from my pickups picking up frequencies from my computer monitors.

Great video and thank you very much for it !!! I/we could really use a *"step by step hook up"* process for the 100w 2x12 Mk.ll amp. How to cable, the order of the stomp boxes, and where and how to plug them in properly. Basically start with just the amp, and hook up the GF-AC foot switch , various stomp boxes(drive, distortion, compressor,etc.) looper. Maybe with and without an expression pedal if it changes the hook-up order. Anyway, there's all kinds of videos that kind of go over it. But nothing that is precise and specific. No problem with the GF-AC hook-up, but adding everything else isn't working properly ??? Lap top took a dump, no access to the tone library etc. It's gonna be a while for a new computer. Frustrated !!!! 🤦 Thanks again for all of your time and effort with this video !!! 👍🏼

@@longshankdrills8799 I've got the following video that explains the FX loop pretty well. As far as the expression pedal plugged into the GA=-FC, it should be plug and play. What kind of cable are you using between the GA-FC and the expression pedal? It needs to be a TRS cable (stereo) and not your regular mono instrument cable. kzbin.info/www/bejne/roGQaJ5jj6qDrbs

Sorry If i messed something up. Can I listen to the Katana on my PC via USB wihout getting sound from the speaker? Or do I need to use the headphone/rec output with a sound interface to make it work? Right now I'am with working with 2 headphones. On from my PC and one from the Katana.
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately it monitors from the speaker when using USB. I personally use and interface and the rec/phones out with a DI box between to level it out. You can probably just plug a dummy plug in the record out to shut down the speaker. I don't think that shuts off the USB sound.

Really appreciate the video. Just got a 50 MK II. But think uou got little confused around 22:00. You say bank B is the bottom 4 on the left column on tone studio while talking about booster and mod etc. Those channels on the left appear to be presets you can adjust and save your own sounds in, whereas the red green yellow bank A etc are linked only to the Effects section?
@Guitarnivore
@Guitarnivore 4 ай бұрын
I think you are confused about what I was explaining. I was explaining the factory default effects linked to each of those factory channels. Sure you can edit and save them. But if you are using and editing from the panels, those will be the default FX for each of those channels, unless you change them using tone studio.

How do these things really sound on stage with the band? Do they cut through nicely like a sick Marshall or is this something that more for home-use? Its so damn hard to tell from KZbin videos obviously but then the out-of-the-box sound is pretty weak when you play it at Guitar Center. You've got to get some patches to compare the thing to a tube amp so it seems, which is cool...but like the Fender Tone Master sounds dope like a Fender tube amp right out of the box. These are a different beast but I just want to know straight up...if you were rocking in a band, is this really going to sound awesome after a few patches?? for reference here is the Andertons running these blind. Obviously the Artist isn't bad...but it sure as heck isn't fooling anyone. So is this just because they didn't go and fix the sound with patches or is it just "not there" yet to compete with a valve amp? kzbin.info/www/bejne/eF6vkqqtn9t2nrs&lc=Ugxzi-lDKJQfSR1zOit4AaABAg.9Ichrw_J5GV9sA1M8YaRdR

I agree that the factory tones leave quite a bit to be desired, but there are plenty of guys that use them on stage. You can dial in some very heavy tones to make it sound very Marshall or Fender tube sounding. The Parametric EQ can really open it up. I would suggest the 100 watt or higher though. The speaker in the 50 sounds very thin.

I bought this amp and tried the tone studio with the eq even had a physical eq in my fx loop. The patches i got honestly didnt sound that good. If you select an overdrive pedal in the amp and have the same pedal physically and hook it up for instance like a blues driver, the amp will always sound better than your pedal. I feel like this is done on purpose to make you use the tone studio. Needless to say I spent more time doing exactly what your doing in this video than actually playing my guitar. I was able to set it up to sounds good but still very digital sounding! I returned it and bought the Orange Super Crush 100 for $130 dollars more and holy cow for a non tube amp it rips and dont regret it for a second!

Absolutely! All three of them are great and you can certainly gig with any one of the three. If the 100 2x12 is anything like the cabinet and head, it doesn't sound very good at low volume and shines best when it's cranked. The Artist and the 1x12 sound great at lower or high volume.

Great tutorial, but the word flanger is pronounced with a short 'a' as in 'angie', not like 'angle'. It refers to the way it was first produced, by someone accidentally touching the "flange" of the tape reel while it was recording. This created a modulation effect. This was how it was actually done for years before it was produced electronically.
