Simracing is difficult. Learning how to drive fast takes time, dedication and persistence. Assetto Corsa Competizione is one of the best simulations with highly sensitive aerodynamics that want to be respected. Telemetry, such as motec helps with analyzing car behavior and finding major issues in the car setup or driving style. Special sim racing hardware also helps with becoming better, but certainly is not the solution to your problems. Load cell pedals offer better feel. Stronger but most importantly more detailed force feedback of e.g. direct drive wheels offer more immersive sensations. Though I know and I've seen throughout the years, people with entry level hardware perform on top level.

At last! Someone actually explains to us plebs how to set up suspension with MoTeC. I never knew the ideal curve or how to adjust it. I still need to learn about spring rates and anti roll bars. Thanks Nils! MoTeC could be such a useful tool for helping people go faster but there is very little about how to use it. It’s like you have to be in on the joke.

Great video once again Nils! I think there is a small little mistake when you were talking about the bump stops and their range. If the front bump stop range is high, the car pitches forward during braking or goes super low at the front during compression on top of the hill. But this generates more and more downforce at the front because front splitter is more near to the ground. The worst thing that can happen is that the airflow towards the rear diffusor stalls and you get very abrupt oversteer moment. Talking in rake angle, if you lower the bump stop range at the front and not changing the rear you will get even more negative rake. In your example the negative rake gets less because you set the rear bump stop range lower so the rear suspension can't travel that much anymore and you get less negative rake angle :-) the change in the rear seems like to outweight the change in the front :-) Maybe you meant that in the video, but understood the opposite at first when following your explanation :-) Greetings, Dom

@@SimracingPopometer all good mate. I was just wondering, pausing the video, going backwards, watching it again and then made my head around how it is in reality, but took me at least 10min to figure it out 🤣 so hats off to you, that you explain everything in like a Livestream situation 👌🏼 One question, did you figure out where the ride height in ACC in measured? Is it in the middle of the car and then the lowest point of the vehicle (front splitter, diffusor) ? Or is it measured at the suspension?

Hey Goelz. You mentioned airflow at the diffuser stalling. What does this have to do with the stuff you were talking about? When does the airflow stall? And why does it cause oversteer? I see a lot of value in the damper histogram and suspension obviously. Ride height or rather rake changes in certain situations during a lap, to look for balance issues. Evolution of pressures and temperatures throughout a stint. And then its really driver input and tire slip, just to see what you do wrong yourself rather than the car being wrong

So you say at 08:50 that the "rebound bar" is too high in the middle so you want to increase rebound - but a high rebound bar at the middle means most of movement is happening near 0 mm/sec range. Increasing damping would only make this "rebound bar" higher

at 7 min, that is not true. harder springs create higher damper velocities. its a misconception people think harder springs will generate more grip. its the other way around. so if ur histograms are to flat u have to decrease the spring rate. or more high speed damping. most important thing is, to keep them symmetrically. they should be normalized distributed (gaus'sche bell curve) to statistically have the most grip. which doesnt mean if they look pretty u have a ton of grip. for example daytona or lemans create good looking damper histos because most of the time u drive in a straight line where the dampers arnt moving very much. anyway. good content, good video. keep it up.

Awesome video! I just started learning Motec, and following the video, I used the same Bin Values. What I instantly noticed, working on the Bentley in Suzuka, is that the top values were way higher, around 17%, I couldn't get it below 16% no matter how soft I went . I got a very good setup from someone, in that, top values are 20% front and 14% rear. I just can't get my head around this, seeing you tried to go to 12% in the example. Maybes setting are off in my view?

dont be too focused on getting all these values exactly as I was saying here. there's way more room in this and also the shape doesnt have to be perfect. All it does is giving you a rough estimation and it should be treated like that. There are no huge gains in this, just fine tuning

But ive set the bumbstoprate und wheel rate to the max und the bumpstoprange to the lowest, just like you told us. Also I realy cant figure out when I have to raise which one to get what result. It doesnt really get that clear in the video I find. Anyways good video mate, keep it up
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 4 жыл бұрын
Hey! It just is A LOT more complex than this.The audi is a different car with different engine placement, with different dampers and different gaps between the individual clicks. We don't know how hard the "0" setting on the damper is on the Audi compared to the Mercedes. The relationship between changes on the rear and the front is important, too. If you raise the rear rebound damping, the bump related bars on the front will also be affected. Clicks on the dampers are not necessarily linear. You will have to really work out how that car responds to which changes. It is not trivial sadly and not easy to figure out. There are not much videos because there is hardly any generalization possible. If you want to get it right, you will need to go deep, there's no easy way out. We have a few guides posted on my discord. Additionally 12% is not the holy grail, it does not work on all tracks, it is a rough reference what to aim for.

Question to the Rake Angle: So can you say the optimum Aero "Grip" is, when the rake angle tends to 0? If it is on the straight/highspeed corner at 3 so you can say it didnt reach the optimum rake angle of 0 where the aero performance should be the best? If it is negative, you can say the aero tends to understeer and above zero to oversteer?
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer Жыл бұрын
no, it works different. rake ( =difference between front and rear ride height) generally adds downforce to the front. for some cars it also adds more downforce to the rear. for some cars rear ride height in general gains downforce on the rear, for some it loses downforce. the overall effect on balance and total downforce then differs per car, so you will have cars that prefer low and cars that prefer high rake

I know that this is a very old video and a lot of things might be different now, but there's something that i literally do not understand about the dumper histogram...how am i supposed to achieve "x" result if by simply changing the bin width all the values change? Let's say for example that i want to reach the 12% with the bin in the middle, using a width of 5 the histogram might show that i reached the 8%, but using a width of 10 it might show that i already reached 14%...so what value should i actually consider to be the right one? 😅

Hey Nils, hey everybody, I am a little confused actually, the core is already known and you explained it quite brilliantly but I still fail to understand how to setup MOTEC exactly, the graph you shown was setting up the "slow bump and rebound" under 100 mm/s but on MOTEC you set it up at a much lower value, so what should we use exactly ? Is the goal only to get the same shape, not to reach 12% exactly ? I'm asking this because I've read a ton of articles and seen a lot of video and almost nobody deals with those parameters, if we change values the shape changes and the results as well, so....here is my problem.

Would you always use softer rebound to bump??? Or visa versa or would you recommend running equal bump/rebound. On console we don’t have the luxury of data analysis tools.

Thnx for the perfect explanation, I learned a lot! But should your grey scale range for the slow bump not be 50 left and right adjusted=100 ? ( on your scale is 40 both=80!) On the perfect white Pic that you posted as a perfect curve is 50 both =100. That mean that you never would reach the 6-7 percent left and right near the grey field with the fast bumps. You have only 4-5 pertcent there on your graph on your 40 L-R range.

Hey, in all books i read so far about these topics it's explained actually exactly the other way around. If the bars are too high in some area, decrease the clicks/damping. If its too low, increase the damping/clicks. see: www.springer.com/de/book/9783658155476 pages 262 and 263 see also: drive.google.com/file/d/1Y4v_C4lnP3UDziZaUpBG3Asz8aGPQ1V_/view page 101-104 of this manual

Thanks for bringing this up! I think you are right. I had a flaw in my perception of the histogram. Indeed increasing the damping on either side will lead to more (in number) slower damper movements which would result in the bars closer to the middle becoming higher. I was mixing up the amount of samples with their speed to some degree. Let me use this for a 2nd video on this to try and make the graph look even better.

Hi Nils, I try to follow your recommendations for an useable setup for 991II GT3 R / Brands Hatch. Also with a complete crazy adjustment (lowest springrate and 17/0/17/0 on the rear dampers) I´m not able to bring the dampers above 9% wit a terrible curve along the rebound/bump. Also several adjustemnts with spoilers and bumpstop were not helpful... Any idea what can be wrong?
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 4 жыл бұрын
Your engine is in the back :) It just is A LOT more complex than this.The Porsche is a different car with different engine placement, with different dampers and different gaps between the individual clicks. We don't know how hard the "0" setting on the damper is on the Porsche compared to the Mercedes.

Thank you kindly for the very informative video. One question what bin width and max settings should I use in histogram properties to achieve a similar curve? I find if I make the Bin width small like say 1 then I get a spike at a lower percentage and when I put it 10 I get a spike at 20%. Are we suppose to keep it around 12% as optimal graph showed? Or am I missing something here? Thanks again Nils for your efforts
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 3 жыл бұрын
the histogram is at best an indication. it varies per track how the histogram will look with the exact same settings, which also means, you cant always reach the same percentages for example. you're looking for a rough bell curve. the shape is not affected by the bin width in the sense that the key information wont change. you just have to think what the histrogram actually does. it simply collects all measurements of damper speeds and puts them into boxes. a box is 10 or 20 or whatever number you want wide.
@Sports314
@Sports314 Жыл бұрын
I know this is old video, but does bump rate, bump range, annd preload differential impact the bell curve. Right now I have wheel rate maxed on front and rear. Front is good, but Rear tires are very flat on what should be a bell curve.

Kannst du mir da bitte helfen? Danke😊
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 4 жыл бұрын

I got a question there is a point I always stumble upon: the histogram and ideal damper curve. With the Honda EVO I cant get the rear slighly near what you show us. Is the Data the Honda delivers buged? Its a very wide but flat curve, nothing I do can change that, the front axle is pronounced and looks very much like the things you show. The rear is kind of different. I made the springs max stiff. I did them super soft, i eleminated all dampersetting, I put all on max I did crazy stuff in between, the histogram doesnt change that much. would be very apreciated to get some inside.
@SimracingPopometer
@SimracingPopometer 3 жыл бұрын
with the engine in the back there's a lot more mass that's moving around in the rear axle and that usually comes with the rear also moving more and longer until things settle. hence the also get less "no movement" data in the histogram and eventually it looks flatter
