How to Use the Metro in Paris: Follow me around the city as I explain exactly how to use the Paris metro system - how to identify a metro station, how to buy Paris metro tickets, how to read the Paris Metro Map, navigate the Paris metro stations and get to where you need to go!
Using The Paris Metro is a great way to discover Paris. When you visit Paris is a good idea to learn how to use the metro (subway). With its 301 stations, the Paris Metro is one of the most extensive underground transportation systems in the world.

There are over 300 stations being serviced by 16 Metro lines, so exploring the city underground is super easy!
Most lines run from 5.30am to 12.30am Monday - Friday, with weekends keeping lines running until 2.15am. Departure times of the first and last trains differ with each station during these times. But if in doubt, there is a chart on the wall of every station (either at the station entrance or on the platform) listing the departure times for both the first and last trains leaving that particular station.
Insider Tip: the RER trains look similar to the Metro, but it is actually a different train system. If you decide to travel further into France from Paris, then this would likely be via the RER trains meaning your Paris metro tickets won't do. But if staying inside Paris only, it’s the Metro you want. The Metro stations will either have a large M over the entrance, or be called Metro or Métropolitain.
When it comes to the Metro, the lines are all colour-coded and numbered, keeping things nice and simple. Each line travels in two separate directions, which is indicated by the start and end stations on each line. For instance, when looking from left to right on the Metro map, line 1 starts in La Défense and ends in Château de Vincennes.
There are also some stations that serve more than one line, whereas some stations serve just one Metro line only. On the map, it’s super easy to spot those stations operating on more than one line, as they show a white circle or oval shape across all of the lines running through that station.
Still wondering how to get around in Paris? Using the Paris Metro system need not be stressful - Citymapper Paris and Paris Metro are two great apps to have in your pocket.

One important thing you forgot to mention is that you need to keep your used metro ticket all the way until you get out and don’t get it mixed up with your other ones. My fiancé and I threw ours away after we used it because we didn’t know we needed to keep them and some super mean security lady charged us each 50 euros.

Starting in April 2019 there will be a new contactless card, the Navigo Easy. It costs 2€ and replaces paper tickets. You will add the fares to the card. You can still purchase a carnet of 10 "tickets" and add it to the card at the discount price. You will also be able to add RER tickets for trips outside of zone 1 such as for the airports. Essentially, it will work like the cards in other modern metro systems such as the Oyster card in London. The paper tickets will start to be phased out in 2021.

My cousin and I had some fun on the Paris metro back in July this year. Was lots of fun traversing all over Paris by train. The only other thing I found is the ticket machines can be temperamental and to wait a couple of seconds before putting your tickets in the machine. I got locked out despite having valid tickets a couple of times and had to jump the counters.

Correction : A pack of 10 is cheaper than... 8 tickets. If you won't have to ever use more than 7, it is a waste of money. Yes you can keep the remaining ones for a later venue in Paris but be aware that the Paris region is planning to get them out of the system soon.

Good apps, but personally I prefer : - Vianavigo (free) for the Itineraries, very ergonomic as you can easily tell him to avoid a certain line or station, register your walking or biking speed (as he also sugest bike paths and even car sharing) - Paris-ci la sortie du metro (not free but around 1€) : give you the precise door to get on to be in front your exit or connection corridor. Believe me, at some crowded stations like Gare du Nord, be in the good third of the train (a third of 5 wagons is ?..) is not enough, you need to be right in front of the exit to be out before been stopped by the crowd.

Why the heck is that so complicated?? Why don’t they creat an app for online purchases?? The world needs to learn from Germany, how to make life easier. In Germany there is a DB Navigator with that you can look for Connections( Train, Tram, Subway, etc). Beside that each city has their own app, with them you can buy online ticket and also look for connections.

Using metro is convenient but you don't see the town. Are the busses and trams also as good?
@yohannmilan3965
@yohannmilan3965 5 жыл бұрын
Buses in paris are good but not on week days when trafic jams block them The bus network is deserving all the corners of paris just as metro but they are obviously slower and have less frequency. Also, buses are exactly the same price as metro. Trams in Paris are only around paris (T3a and T3b) and in the suburbs, no tram inside the city core. The big plus of buses is that you can see the whole city from your seat : lines 69 between bastille and champ de mars, 72 between hotel de ville and pont de bir hakeim, 20 between gare de lyon and opera or 86 between nation and saint germain des prés are very interesting lines to visit the city.

@yohannmilan3965
@yohannmilan3965 5 жыл бұрын
Line 6 above ground parts are far more interesting than line 2 one. Line 2 above ground section is in a popular and not really safe district for tourists and there’s not so much things to see whereas line 6 above ground parts are really interesting, specially the two bridges over seine river. For felix : between passy and bir hakeim on line 6 you have a magnificent view of the effeil tower and the seine river from the metro. The above ground parts of line 6 are located between those stations : from Passy to pasteur, from saint jacques to bercy. The line 2 one is between anvers and colonel fabien. Line 5 also have one between saint marcel and quai de la rappee (including a bridge over the river)

I spent half a day researching a book -- about the Metro system. I read at least a hundred reviews on TripAdvisor and this is what everyone said: the French Metro system is filled with pickpockets, very clever, practiced pickpockets. Another big risk: The agency that runs the Metro is highly corrupt and target tourists with ticket scams, not just once in a while, everyday. It is in regarding "stamping" your Metro ticket - you MUST stamp it for a date, or write in a date, even if locals do not do it. If a Metro agency catches without it, (and they'll watch for tourists to screw up) its a 35 Euro fine. Also, do not throw your ticket away until you are AWAY from the Metro station - do NOT do what the locals do and throw the ticket in the trash in the lobby of the Metro. They watch for tourists to do it and then will corner you and charge you 35 - 50 Euros per person in your group.They will call the police if you don't pay and have a credit card reader on hand. Be very, very careful on the Paris Metro. It is not of the quality other Metro systems, even NYC, are. At least one person below on this video commentary mentions experiences this. See Andrea Ryan's story down below - she says that's exactly what happened to her: "My fiancé and I threw ours away after we used it because we didn’t know we needed to keep them and some super mean security lady charged us each 50 euros." You'd think people would want to know about this...so they can prepare. But no, let's just keep it on the hush hush so we can pretend Paris is a version of Marianne, flawless and beautiful.

Hero Trusler This is very true and happened to me. it ruined our day. Who would have thought that you need to keep a used ticket? We each got charged 50 euros and our credit cards didn't work in the machine so we had to give them all of our cash (luckily we had 100 euros). My boyfriend was going to propose to me that day but the mood was too spoiled. It was really frustrating. All tourists need to know about this and I haven't seen anybody mention it.
