You are such a great teacher! I kind of understood this but you gave me a real "light bulb" moment. Explaining the odd man out to know the key is so helpful and then moving back 3 frets for the minor. Thanks so much for your lesson and explaining these together. Most "teaching" videos are explaining for 10 seconds and then 10 minutes watching a professional musician play something that would take me 5 years to learn LOL. Thanks Again!

Hey Lauren. My guitar teacher covered this as well. What brought this video was the fact I wanted to learn the RIFF for 'So What' by Pink. It was written in F# minor and as I saw the tab sheet, I realized with some thinking that it was just using the Penatonic scale for the riff -> and it is also wickedly fun to play. I never imagined how much Penatonic scales are used in pop music - I do now! You are the best.

I've been playing for around 20 years with no theory to lean on. This is the first time someone explained how to pick a scale that fits with the songs chords so simply!!! Find the odd chord and go back three notes, WHAT?!?! EVERYONE ELSE MAKES IT SOUND SO COMPLICATED!! Haha!!
@LaurenBateman
@LaurenBateman 2 жыл бұрын
Ha ha ha. Honestly, I played guitar for 10 years and wrote a whole album without knowing a single thing about theory. So goes to show you it doesn't have to be complicated to help people understand. Theory has helped me so much and has helped me become a better player, but I always do theory on a need to know basis. It can feel like an algebra or calculus class for many and that's not always fun. Small doses at a time is a better approach unless someone is REALLY into it.

Hi first off I would like to say great lesson! This was explained perfectly and easy to follow. I have one question though. I understand you’re supposed to find your a note then count back 3 notes to find your box to play the minor pentatonic. However why does the minor pentatonic sound good when playing it in the regular major key box as well? For example if a song is in the key of G major and you play the minor pentatonic shape on the 3rd fret where the G note is why does that still work? Thank you
@LaurenBateman
@LaurenBateman 9 ай бұрын
Well, when you think of the difference between a G major and a G minor chord, there is only a one note difference. The b3. So the Minor Pentatonic still shared notes with the major scale. Not all the notes will work perfectly but many will work well.

Also look to your circle of 5th's chart it is an amazing tool to help you understand the major keys and relations to each other such as C major count three spaces to the right and it is A,which is the relative minor of C,do this with any key letter and that will give you your relative minor for that key,and there is so much more to this tool.

Is there only one pattern for all minor keys??

Yes, this pattern is moveable depending on the key.

Seems to me something is backwards here. If one plays that shape with the index finger on the root note, let's say A for example, I believe you're playing the Am pentatonic scale in that position (or the Cmaj pentatonic as referenced by your little finger on the C note). Moving back three frets would position one's pinky now on the A note, and the same pattern would now render such an Amaj pentatonic scale. This seems to conflict with what you're teaching. Am I missing something here?

It is NOT the major pentatonic scale. Am pentatonic scale to relative major scale. So C major may be the key but A minor pentatonic is the scale.
