Don't use the vbit to set 0's on x and y. Use a regular bit for x and y then install your v bit and probe just Z

I’m glad I ran into this video i was very confused on why I even needed the prob, so usually just eyeball the corner and haven’t had any issues
@nightcarverdesigns3 жыл бұрын
Yes. I eyeballed for years and the only issue is sometimes my Z would be too deep or not deep enough. So I have gotten in the practice since making the video to just probe with the Z and it’s been awesome. But it’s not needed and just really freaking nice to get that same carve if your doing multiple pieces.
@JF323042 жыл бұрын
Yeah if you just eye ball it and have been doing it for years your fine. That's how I do it as well, as my start isn't the corner.

@@JF32304 right. Either way is good but I do love to Z probe now. Do you start in the center?

Great vid! can't wait to get my onefinity. Bill Baggins said it best with using a regular bit for x and y then switch back to the v for Z. This sign is going to look awesome!

I gotta say I agree with that for sure, which leads me to why I never used my probe before this. I pretty much always use a V-bit and never straight bits. Making KZbin vids is gonna teach me so much cause awesome people will help fill in my knowledge gaps.

@@nightcarverdesigns on that note use screen recording when you are showing anything on a screen. Production wise it will look better. So any work on your pc and just do a voice over. There are cases where you can’t and you need to film say the tablet on the machine.

Nice video. I like that you caught the error when probing Z and kept it in the video. This is part of the learning process. When probing XYZ, it is not recommended when using a V bit as the diameter is not constant. You can see from your video that the XY zero was off on the last cut. Great work and thanks for sharing.
@nightcarverdesigns3 жыл бұрын
Thanks, yeah I totally noticed it when editing the video that it was off. I fixed it when powercarving the piece by removing the extra space on the top. I have to say after trying all the techniques that I will be using the probe to do my Z only as I always use V-Bits. And thanks for the note about leaving the error, I messed up and it seems like it was an error many would make it I didn’t show it.

Recommend you put stops on your spoilboard -- or even straight lines -- along the X and Y axes. That way you can place each of your pieces in the same location on the spoilboard. Once you've located your X,Y,Z zero for the first board, you don't have to probe any of the remaining boards unless you change bits (or lose power) or there's a significant difference in thickness. Curious what speed you were running your router? it sounded really slow.
@nightcarverdesigns2 жыл бұрын
Thanks so much. The actual router itself? It’s at one
@richardfarwell67592 жыл бұрын
@@nightcarverdesigns Not familiar with the Makita, but I'll guess it has a top speed of around 24000rpm. So if speeds are, say, 1 thru 6, one is probably about 10000rpm and 6 is 24000rpm. If you're typically using 1/4" end mills and 90deg V-bits, you should run around "4" or 18000rpm. Large surfacing bits (1-1/2" or 2") could slow down to "2" or 12000rpm. If you find that faster speeds are burning your wood, then try speeding up your inches per minute (ipm) of the X,Y,Z travel. With all this said, if you're getting satisfactory cuts, then pay me no mind.
@nightcarverdesigns2 жыл бұрын
@@richardfarwell6759 hahaha I love your ending. Thank you. I truly appreciate the tips. I’ve been carving for awhile now and haven’t run into any burning. I typical run it slower because of all the tiny lines I carve and in the past I used to get blow out on spots. I mean could be that I primarily use pine.

I like how you eyeballed the X and Y. I didn't know you could do that and I've been probing XYZ for each project and broken a few bits doing so and it takes a long time. I think I will just probe for Z and eyeball the X and Y.
