Looking good! A tip on the thread avalanche. When you get to building the taper, make sure the thread is "relaxed". Let the bobbin hang and spin it counter clockwise- the object is to take the twist out of the thread and get the fibers parallel. As we wrap the thread on the hook, each time we make a turn it also makes a full twist in the thread so you have to repeat the untwisting as you go. This also makes the thread lay much smoother. I would also recommend checking out using dubbing for the body of the jig. Just remember to counter wrap with fine (22-28 gauge) brass wire to make it durable- a hundred fish jig is my goal. Then cut the stuff off and re-tie for another hundred fish on the same hook. On the scissors- I bought a pair of DOVO Flamma scissors years ago at a cutlery shop that were in the sewing section. Very fine, straight tips. I've used them on size 20 nymphs up to salt water sizes with excellent results. Take a look in the sewing section. Buy a good pair of scissors and take care of them and your tying will be much more enjoyable. Except for the fish- they probably don't like being invited to the dinner table! Three more tips to help your hook up and make unhooking easier and less damaging to the fish or the unlucky fisherman. Get a pair of short, round jaw, needle nosed pliers and pinch the barbs down just so the point of the barb touches the shank. Then open the bend of the hook slightly (my thanks to Richard Gene the Fishing Machine for that one). Also sharpen the hook as needed. Needle sharp. These combined will increase your hookups and landing. It will be much easier and faster to unhook all those shorts. And when you get one in your finger it really pays off! Good fishin' y'all!

When I tie like that I think of the taper as stairs. If I make the stairs to steep the thread falls down.
