How to use video capture device in Streamlabs (2022)

If people are not getting sound and are on ps3, ps4, or ps5 you have to push the sound through your TV. If you push it to your headset, it will not send it to the capture card. This is a flaw with Sony design and you have to use either an Astros headset that has the mixed amp or a chat link cable.

@cutecrafter8100 same thing as the Sony side. The audio will go through the hdmi which will pick up in the stream, but if you want to hear it you either need to listen off the TV or get a headset that works like the astro headset with the mixed amp

I looked into a chat link cable - how would this work with my wireless headset? I have a Rig headset that has a USB connecter and a dongle to connect to the headset. I plugged my headset into my PC so that I can use the mic and I managed to get the audio from my game into my headset, but there is a 1 second delay between what's on my screen and what is coming through my headphones. Would you know how to fix this? 1 second doesn't seem like much but in FPS games it can be the difference between living and dying, I've found.

If you’re getting stuck on a black screen, try not naming the Video capture device and leave it as “webcam” instead of adding a new source and naming it (that’s what worked for me at least)

@Fuzion-_ it needs to go to the TV so you can play off your TV. If you play to a monitor then you need a two monitor setup or plug it to a TV vs a monitor so you can access obs on your pc.

Hey man, hope you can help: I’m trying to stream PS3 gameplay to my friends on Discord. I saw some of your comments on other threads saying it’s more complicated on PlayStation. I’m using a NearStream capture card, and the video works fine but without audio. If I add audio as another source and select my capture card for this again, I can hear the audio, only issue is I can only select one as an output projector. This is weird since it looks like the audio is being passed to the capture card and to StreamLabs, just not through the one channel, so when I stream the Projector on Discord, there’s only video. Any ideas?

Hey there. Thanks for reaching out. I honestly am not sure how to fix that. Playstation has this stupid hdcp setting and then when you push the audio it's either all audio to headset or just voice chat to headset while the game audio goes to the capture card. If you see the channel for your capture card audio moving without the projector then it's working. So what you can try to do is go to the sound mixer setting in streamlabs and under monitor set it to play through your speakers. Then test the stream capture in discord. If that doesn't work, go to discord and in the voice and audio make it be the same speakers your stream is coming out from.

@@CreoVox yeah I saw you were saying that before, that’s why I was surprised it was getting the capture audio at all since it was coming through my TV. I’ve found a strange workaround in the meantime in case anyone is trying to stream to Discord also: I set my INPUT device on Discord as the capture card and removed all forms of noise suppression. This means you get the video through the stream and the audio in place of the microphone (worth noting I’m capturing on a separate PC with another Discord account so don’t need the mic in). Only downside is that people who join the call will hear the game audio whether they click on the stream or not, but they can just mute my alt if they do not wish to hear it. The sooner Sony allows Discord to implement screen sharing into their PS5 app too the better! 😂 Appreciate you getting back to me man. The solution is less than elegant but better than nothing!

Hello, im still having some trouble with this simple setup. I’ve troubleshooted everything except new chords and new equipment. Everything else works except the capturing of the screen play audio and my entire lobbies i play with. If it makes sense the elgato only capture my audio and i can’t figure it out!!! Please help!!!

1. Make sure the elgato software isn't running in the background. 2. If you are on a Mac then that might be the issue. 3. Make sure you use video capture device as your scene source and select the capture card. 4. Try obs studio or streamlabs. Make sure both are on the latest version. 5. Close obs or streamlabs and open the elgato software to see if it works in that software. If it doesn't then your capture card is setup wrong. If it does work then it's an issue with obs or streamlabs.

Depends on many factors. 1. Hdmi wire not hooked up right 2. Using the wrong device as a capture card 3. The source is muted 4. The channel in the audio mixer is unchecked Now if you see the source audio moving in the audio mixer then it's working. You aren't meant to hear it off obs, but if your stream hears it on the website where you stream then you are fine.

So idk anything about vr. If it's hooked up to your pc you should be able to add it as a video source. Your cam will be a video capture device as well so you might have to create 2 video capture sources on the scene. Make sure the Webcam source is above the game source in your source list. It treats it like layers.

OK that's good. Have you tried other devices like a Webcam? If so did that work? Also do you see two different elgato capturing software options? If so sometimes you need to select the one you originally don't want then when it shows picture you go back and select the one you do want. I have also had to do the following to fix it in the past. - Uninstall and reinstall streamlabs - unplug the power from the elgato capture device for 30 seconds and plug back in. - unplug and plug back in the hdmi cables on the capture card. - in streamlabs settings I'd delete the cache and restart. THAT IS A LAST RESORT! - I'd also test it in obs studio. If it worked there then it is a streamlabs issue which I recommend putting in a support ticket. Hope this helps

That's strange. Did you have an older elgato capture card before? If so you might want to delete all elgato game capture software, then reinstall just the one for the HD60 X. I use obs studio and it only shows my HD60 S. Same for my streamlabs.

Not sure what happened but streamlabs may have done another update that completely broke this for me. PS5 shows up as normal but if I try to swap to PS3 (since I still have the game capture HD and both are simultaneously plugged in) I used to be able to hit configure video to swap between them but that menu now just won't stay open and it just flashes for a second and disappears meaning I'm currently unable to swap the source to PS3. I used to be able to freely swap between them in the same stream but since you can't have both streamlabs and elgato open at the same time due to it saying its already in use it makes swapping in between even more of a headache just normally and impossible to do on stream, even presetting it to PS3 in the elgato itself does nothing and its still stuck on PS5 in streamlabs

just buy an HDMI switch hub. You can have up to 4 devices go into the hub and then output to just a single source. That single source will be your elgato capture card. (this will eliminate the need for 2 capture cards). When you want to go to ps3, hit the button on the switch and vice versa when you want to go to your ps5. @@CreoVox I only have the 1 capture card. I am able to have my PS5 & PS3 plugged into it simultaneously due to this model still having both an HDMI & AV input. The issue I have is that normally when I'd hit the configure video button in streamlabs that menu would pop up to allow me to switch the source in the dropdown menu but that menu currently doesn't appear anymore. Like I hit configure video, the window pops up for a split second and then disappears again and has been doing that since.

You won't hear it from your pc unless you go into the advanced audio and monitor it (not recommended). If you see the green bars moving up and down after adding it as a video capture device then it's working.

You need an ASTRO a40 headset or look into a chat link cable. Sony doesn't let you do both. I use the ASTRO a40 headset because the mix Amp let's me split the audio. Sony has been like this since ps3. Hope that helps.

Through my ASTRO A40s. Sound goes through the hdmi so your sound will come out your TV or headphones. If you are streaming pa3,ps4, or ps5 you need more equipment to hear it.

So you will need a separate mic for just the PC. This will be used for your stream to hear you. You wont use the xbox mic. Your xbox headset will be just for you to hear the game you play off say a TV or monitor and to chat on xbox, not on PC. I am not sure how you have it setup, but you shouldnt be listening to the stream from your PC. You should be listening to it from your Xbox.

Are you playing a PC game? This video is for capture cards (unless you have a PC capture card). You should be able to select the playback device on your pc sound settings (i.e., speakers). The audience will hear it once you add the proper source. So if you aren't using a capture card, and it's a PC game then you'd use display capture, window capture, or game capture. That will pull in the video / audio of the game to the stream. For your voice you need a mic going to your pc. Like a blue Yeti. Then you need to go into the streamlabs settings > audio > and select your mic/aux device (which would be like the blue Yeti in this example)

Thanks for watching and coming at me with lots of questions haha. I encourage everyone to do that. So let me try to break it down. 1. So the game audio will run through the capture card. If you are getting the Elgato capture card like HD60S for example 1 HDMI goes from the capture card to the TV, the other HDMI goes from the capture card to your console and the USB powers the capture card when plugged into your pc. 2. You will need a program like OBS Studio or Streamlabs Desktop. Streamlabs Desktop is great for beginners. You will add a video capture device source and select your capture card. Once you have that it will bring the audio into the program. (Be sure to check my playlists as I cover a lot of this) 3. You might be able to use your headset, but the audio quality is going to be poor. I recommend looking at USB Condenser mics like the Elgato Wave 3, Blue Snowball, Blue Yeti. This was you have a mic specifically for you and your stream. Audio is more important than visuals. You can also look into Elgato chat link. 4. The webcam mic you will want to mute in the stream program. The desktop audio will be fine as long as you have ear buds plugged into the aux port on your speaker so you only hear alerts and such. Once you venture outside of streaming from the console it can get complicated quickly. You also need to make sure you have a strong internet connection (wired and at least 20 upload) and a gaming pc that can handle streaming. Hopefully this helped. Hey there, I’ve added another video capture device via capture card (to stream my Nintendo Switch) and here’s my problem: my webcam and Switch strangely do not work together. My webcam was working and when I added Switch I had a black screen. I’ve removed both sources and added Switch, this time I was able to have Switch displayed on the screen but then my webcam showed me a black screen this time. (and strangely, its display led turned off at the moment I added it as a source) Is it a known problem?

So try creating two NEW video capture sources. Create one names game. Then add another video capture source but don't choose "use existing source" option. Select new and name is cam. Make sure the webcam is plugged into your pc with the proper USB port (2.0, 3.0, etc) Your sources in obs or streamlabs are also like a layer system so in your sources list if the game is above the Webcam then the Webcam won't show. So make sure the cam is above the game and resize the cam.

@@CreoVox thanks a lot for your answer! I've actually done exactly what you've told me; my Switch and Webcam were two separate video capture sources, and they were side by side -- no overlapping. I've solved the problem byu checking out the resolution: Switch doesn't work with the default resolution; you need to manually set it to 1280x720. I did so and this solved my problem. Hope it helps out to those who's trying to stream their Nintendo Switch gameplay. Thanks for your answer once again!

1. Get rid of your Mac (I'm just messing lol) 2. Close streamlabs 3. Open the elgato software to see if it works. If it works in the elgato software then close that. 4. Restart your Mac 5. Open the streamlabs program 6. Try the video capture device again and see if it's in the drop down list for devices. 7. If not go to settings in streamlabs and I think on the general tab you'll see delete cache. If it's not there look through the settings for it. 8. If it still don't work then go to streamlabs website and reinstall the program and try again. Goodluck!

I have an old macbook air (I can’t just get a new laptop at the moment) my elgato hd60s shows up in the elgato streaming software “game capture hd” but when i go to add a video capture device in streamlabs there is a blank space with no name but it’s an option to use. When i click that it says the device name is blank and it’s just a black screen. Any ideas on how to get it to work? My capture card also doesn’t show up in OBS the only capture device that shows up in both is just the facetime camera on my laptop

Make sure the elgato software is closed. Then try it. If it doesn't work then try switch between different devices in the drop down. If it doesn't work still then I'm unfortunately out of ideas. I know macs have less support with obs or streamlabs

When I click "VIdeo Capture Device", I am only able to see the my mobile phone listed for "Camera", the Elgato doesn't appear on the drop-downlist. The game scene appears in the Elgato Game Capture HD software (Mac) when I attach the Elgato to the console and my PC. Nothing seems wrong with the Elgato cords, not that I can see if the game scene appears within the software itself.

@@WLtroodaTV I never used that before but it should work. The USB c has to go into your pc, then hdmi in goes from console to capture card, the hdmi out goes to from the capture card to your monitor or TV. In streamlabs you do video capture device and find it in the drop down.

That's tricky. Only way I've gotten it is by using astro a40s with the mixed Amp and setting your xbox headset settings to play through headset and speaker. This way it gets picked up in the hdmi. If it's ps4/ps5 I never got it to work but heard people using elgato chat cable link.

When I try to add a capture source, it comes up blank. I've tried using two different capture devices, restarted both apps, uninstalled ands reinstalled both apps and restarted the computer. I can't for the life of me figure out what I'm doing wrong that the game Capture device doesn't show up. I read that the game capture app can't be open, tried all of these steps with it closed as well as open. Nothing. I could really used some help because even google doesn't come up with anything :/

Game capture is pc games only. Video Capture device is for Capture cards. (Usually for console). If you are trying to Capture pc games its recommended to have dual monitor setup. If game capture doesn't work you'll want to try screen capture, window capture or display capture. Make sure the pc game is launched beforehand. If you are trying to capture console games, you cannot have the capturing software open while trying to use streamlabs or obs studio. So you'll need to close that capturing software first. Then do video capture device > select the device (example: elgato HD capture) and it should show the console game.

Could be a bad hdmi, could be your cables are setup incorrectly or your capture card device is possibly defective. The sound comes from the hdmi

Also if you are trying to show your Webcam and capture card at the same time you need to create TWO new video capture device sources. Create one and name it cam. Create another one but don't use an existing video capture device source, you have to create a new one and rename it game. Then move the cam source above your game source in your sources list. Note: if the source is on scene 1 but not scene 2 then when you go to scene 2 you won't get sound of the video capture device on scene 2 but should have sound on scene 1.

@youssef_loves_u you might need to go into streamlabs and in the settings select delete cache or I'd Uninstall / reinstall streamlabs to see if something needs to be reset

No it makes you pick to have audio go to the TV or chat to headset which cancels out the audio. You need to buy a separate mic like a blue Snowball, blue Yeti, etc if you want to record your voice.

You likely have the hdmi setup incorrectly or if the device has capture software make sure that software isn't running while obs or streamlabs is running. If the hdmi are correct make sure the device selected in the video capture device source is showing up. If you have multiple devices like a web cam and capture device you can try toggling back and forth between the two in the drop down. Last options are to deactivate and reactivate the source in obs or streamlabs (kind of like a refresh button) or restart your pc.

Your capture card software should say if it's HD or not. No real way to tell other than the quality of the video footage. KZbin will promote any video if it's getting traction. HD or not has nothing to do with it really.

Hello Im wondering if i can get light into my case, when im adding a source, I cant get past the point after giving it a name, the window freezes and the program follows, i have verified with the Capture card software alone and The image does reach my PC as Input via the capture card default software, we have tried uninstalling and re-installing Streamlabs Desktop but nothing changes, we have rolled back versions of Nvidia software and Streamlabs and still no fix. If anybody can help please and thank you.

Video capture is for stuff like Webcam or capture cards. Game capture is for pc games. You want to look at screen capture, window capture or display capture. I have videos on my channel for all of them

so Playstation is weird. you either get all sound going to the tv which will push it to the capture card, but then you wont get sound going into your headphone. If you push it to your headphones then you dont get sound going to your capture card. The fix I found for me is to use my astro a40s mixed amp, but that isnt a cheap fix for most people. A chat link cable might help, but im not sure.

If you are using video capture that is usually a capture card. So it should be on your TV or monitor. If you use a single monitor setup and play on the same monitor you stream with then you need 2 monitors.

@@CreoVox don't worry, it's fixed now! So I found out with the Elgato capture card, it's short circuit itself when I change the display for the PS5 through my desktop monitor HDMI to the Elgato itself Sorry, the Elgato practically did a self-safety reset so it wouldn't endgame itself

Audio will go through the hdmi. So if it's going to a TV or monitor that has speakers it should play sound that way. Or are you trying to do something else?

check your cabling. Make sure you have the connections going the right way from capture card to tv/monitor and to console. Also if the capture card came with a recording software close streamlabs completely and try opening the game up in the recording software (i.e. The Elgato HD Capture software). If it doesnt show up in the recording software then it wont show up in the streaming software.

That comes through the hdmi. If you are streaming playstation 3, 4, or 5 then you can't have a headset hooked up to the system as it will either push all audio to the headset or you can push just chat to your headset.

Depends what capture card you are using and how you have it set up. If you see it moving in your audio mixer then it's working. You aren't meant to hear it when in the encoder.

i started streaming straight off the ps5 for testing and whatnot everything worked, overlays, face cam, i just need to find a way for the overlay to show for mobile users instead of only desktops, are you able to help with that by any chance ?

haha that would be more difficult considering I have A TON of wiring for my setup. Also video capture device is used for multiple different things. Simple USB webcams, the Elgato Camlinks, Capture Cards (both external and internal cards), etc. So each setup is going to be different depending on the need of the user. If you are using an external capture card like the Elgato HD60S they give you instructions on how to install it. If you arent getting picture from the elgato software then it might not be setup correctly. If you are getting picture on the elgato software, but not on the streamlabs or obs studio software then it could be something else with the streaming program.

@Luc1d_WT you might just need to close streamlabs and reopen it. Maybe restart your pc? I wouldn't be surprised if streamlabs was having issues haha. If you boot up obs right now and it works fine, then it's definitely something with streamlabs software.

If its an elgato capture card, or a capture card with its own dedicated recording software youll want to open that software and make the changes in there and then go into streamlabs and see if the changes reflected there. Sometimes streamlabs will glitch or have it minimized in the taskbar.

Depends on many factors. 1. Hdmi wire not hooked up right 2. Using the wrong device as a capture card 3. The source is muted 4. The channel in the audio mixer is unchecked Now if you see the source audio moving in the audio mixer then it's working. You aren't meant to hear it off obs, but if your stream hears it on the website where you stream then you are fine.

@@CreoVox basically I just bought a lot of equipment for streaming so I jus got the Acer nitro 5, hd60s capture card, canon m200, and all the cables needed to connect them. Well everytime I go on OBS or Elgato’s streaming program I have a black screen. Well first I thought it was my tv so I switched to a monitor, then obs would work wen I am trying to display my laptop screen but not the screen off my ps5. I went into mg settings made the obs was updated, then ran it as administrator, then made sure HDCP was turned off. Made sure I plugged everything right nd still confused. I ever tried it on another laptop nd couldn’t get it

If you just launch the elgato software do you get picture? If not then the wires are setup incorrectly on the capture card. If you do get pictures on the elgato software close the software via task manager and open obs studio. Then do the video capture device and select the elgato hd60. Don't touch any of the settings just leave it as it is. Sometimes you have to toggle between another device in that drop down and then go back to the elgato hd60. Note: you can't have the elgato software open or running in the background at the same time as obs with video capture device running to try to capture your video card.

you will need to make sure your audio devices in the audio mixer arent peaking into the red. If they are then you need to lower the slider for the specific audio source in the audio mixer area on streamlabs.

If it's ps5 you need to switch it from play sound through headset to just chat through headset. (This is a big problem with streaming ps4/ps5 and requires you to get other equipment just to get sound to your headset). If it's xbox or Nintendo then it could be cable issue. Another thing it could be is a defective device or you have the capture card audio in the streamlabs audio mixer section muted or too low.
