How to use your existing Guild Wars 2 account on Steam

(UPDATE KZbin deleted my pin comment... Thanks KZbin...) When using this method You can't buy expansions, DLC and gems, you have to use Anet's Website for that. And if you don't wanna redownload the game again just click download on steam than pause the download than go to GW2's Steam folder and put the GW2.dat (60GB+ file) in there from your normal GW2 folder.

If you have it on steam already why would it re-download it? does it re-download the game when you purchase the upgrades from the Anet website? or is that for the base game and not the upgrades, I am using my old account on steam using this method but I realize I have to buy the upgrades from the website which isn't a big deal, but does it make you re-download the game or no?

@@drewcarry8280 did you ever figure that out? how does downloading the DLC go if I don't purchase through steam? I've had my account for way too long to just start over but want to use it through steam for the game time tracking and to keep everything in one place as much as possible.

​@@mitch6777The DLC will be downloaded through the GW2 launcher automatically. You don't have to worry about it. My full steam version never download any dlc from steam. Arenanet is the one tracking your DLC and purchases.

Ok this worked, now I can toggle my paid account or a free steam account. Ill toss you a sub and even hit the bell for 2 reasons. 1. You didnt ask me to sub before you showed your video*ill never sub to ppl who ask for a sub before I even see the video* and 2 your video was short, to the point and works. Beem having the same issue for the last 3 days, the game didn't download from their launcher. Tried several times and almost gave up. Seems it's a things these past days, seen some forum posts and neither of the tips worked. 1st i thougt it was my laptop or internet, but i was able to download other games in a pinch, so that made me think it is an issue on Anet's side.

Can I ask, why would I want to open my Arenanet account on Steam? any advantage to play the game with Steam?

The only reason I could think of is to influence the steam charts of online players - though they never would reflect the true number of players online - so it is pointless.

It's beneficial because you can open a web browser in game using the steam overlay, whenever you need to wiki something related to crafting or achievements which becomes common practice given the depth of this game. Standard Arenenet accounts have to open a browser outside the game or use an add on plugin browser which won't go away until you close it, effectively blocking your game screen while active.

@@nakofoefire steam browser will stay open when you return to game/unpause the steam overlay. /wiki browser blocks your screen on single monitor setups and needs to be closed or moved to the edge which can be inconvenient.

@@mattRlive I did something a little different because I did not want to move my GW2 folder from its original location. Using a directory symbolic link comes in handy for this task as I also use this for the Chrome temp directory to have it go to where I want it my files to be at. Using administrative privileges using the command prompt, I used this command. mklink /d is the syntax. Example which is in my case. mklink /d "D:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\Guild Wars 2" "C:\Program Files\Guild Wars 2
