It's a good thing you mention that the thumb is out of the way of the blade. People, even me !, use to forget sometime to NEVER put a part of your body in the way of any kind of blade.

nice explanation but i woul boil a kettle of water put the water in a pan and soak the blank for ten minutes as this will make the wood a lot easier to carve. this is if you are going to only use dry wood. the usual practice for spoon carving is ti get a fresh cut section of tree as a log and spliti it down to make a bank. as the fresh wood is saturated with water it is ten times easier to carve and shape.
@kevinzorn2638
@kevinzorn2638 2 жыл бұрын
Yea, that's an interesting suggestion with the boiling water method. I usually carve dry wood because that's just what I find in my location - reclaimed wood or off-cuts from other pieces

Hello! I have the more 162 with Sharp Edge on both sides. And i always use pucjcuts, never the pullcuts. Im right handed.. it feels more natural to push for me. So i have been thinking om buying singelbladed 164 so i can get my finger at the spine for Harder cuts. But i see that i will have to buy the lefthanded to get the blade on the «right» side for me. Is this wrong? Should you always use the pullcuts? Any advantadges im missing?

Can i make with a softwood or needs to be a hardwood to make the spoon stronger?
@kevinzorn2638
@kevinzorn2638 Жыл бұрын
You can use a soft wood if you plan on using the spoon for dry goods like scooping rice, salt, oatmeal. You’ll probably be fine using it for other things too you’d just have be careful with it, no putting it in the dishwasher

Young man. A hook knife is a thing. You're not wrong. Google Ceasars canoe, and you'll see where your knife comes from. The blade should be straight, not warped out.

Although your guide is helpful, any edge tool technique depends on three things, 1. A thorough understanding of the wood you will be working, 2. A properly sharpened tool, 3. Read watch and learn from others that have mastered there use. Many people use edge tools in different ways successfully. Once you have the basic understanding you will find a way that suits you.

This knife is the worst invention of mankind.. no matter what, it doesn't cut for me. It gets the wood all rugedy and leaves like rivers in it so the surface will be inconsistent and I have to cut it all off. No matter what I try it doesn't carve. It's very bad. It didn't even came sharpened and I have no idea how you sharpen a carved snail blade
@kevinzorn2638
@kevinzorn2638 4 жыл бұрын
I have seen this happen - there are some videos of people using this knife and the cuts it makes for them can definitely be described as "rugged". I would say to check the blade to see if it is sharp, try using a different type of wood, some hardwoods are much too hard to learn with especially if they're dry. Sharpening this knife takes practice and there are videos online on how to do this. If it comes to it you can try a gouge instead of a hook knife.
