The compass reminded me of testing the alternator in diesel-engine boat. Place a flat blade screwdriver at the alternator's back bearing. If you can feel the magnetic pull, the alternator is functioning.

So how about if you have a 12 strand wire and only 1 is intact and the others are cut, will it show the resistance ? And if so, you would assume it is corrosion ? Thanks let me know.

So you used a know good ground to prove the resistince was in the pos side?

My understanding is that the red lead should always be connected to the positive wire and the black to the neg. Why is that?

spelunkerd loading the negative side could cause blown fuse at best.

The bonus footage tests aren't very good. Just because the needle moves doesn't mean that the current is sufficient, or it may have too much current flow. As for the charging system test, it may show when the current changes directions and shows alternator charging, but it doesn't show whether or not the charging is sufficient or the voltage is correct. There are also charging strategies where the alternator is shut off at times, (i.e. the car is at idle, WOT, etc.). You adamantly oppose ohm testing (which I agree with), but the bonus tests are just magnetic versions of ohm testing (metaphor, not literal). They tell you something, sometimes, but it may not be correct. There are better tests. Actually, the multi-meter will do in most cases.
