This video applies for any of the early moveable-typebar style of Remington Portables...if your machine has a crazy rainbow shaped slot for a lever on the right side, then this is the droid yer looking for!

This saved me! I was stumped on how to retract the knob. That tiny lever WAS hiding! Thank you!!!

That was all very helpful. Thought I was facing a complicated repair to get the carriage to move and the fix the mechanism so that the paper could be fed in. Thanks to this vid, no repairs at all. Mine is an Envoy Type 1, born in Dec 1940. Because the case has a lot of lifted vinyl, lived in a basement for decades, had tears and missing bits, everyone else passed on the machine. The machine is cosmetically about an 8/10, with a case that’s a 4/10. It’s wiped off, been sprayed with water/vinegar, dried and wiped again and is now ready for glue, roller and a coat of wax. I’ll leave any missing bits alone so the wood shows through. I really like these small typewriters, having been put off of the big brothers when in university. Too big, too heavy, hard to store. Give me a little one any day. The carriage seems a bit stiff due to lack of use. Should I be giving it a light oil to lubricate. My options are Engine Oil, 3M Oil, Singer Sewing Machine Oil or Brass/Woodwind Valve Oil, or White Grease. Any advice?

thanks so much for your enlightening videos. I have a Remington 3 ( I think ) in red like this one, and there are so many levers I didnt know how to use until I saw this. very helpful; many thanks.

I found one of these in the wild (in a cool green shade) and thought I had damaged it in some way - that lock mechanism is crazy, but once it clicked with me (no pun intended) I couldn't help but love the charm of it. Certainly want that machine, but as is always the case, the price is MIA.... funny how that is going at many local antique shops. Maybe one day I'll ask but I'm a lazy man with too many machines as is, hah.

Love that model. I have a black Compact Portable. Unfortunately, the 'ribbon advance' mechanism has stopped working so the ribbon doesn't move right to left, only left to right. I have to wind it back onto the left reel by hand. Still, they are great machines. Enjoyed the video.

Very pretty!! I like that red paint.I just got a Splendid 33, Olympia 2 days ago.Works great.Only the ink might be dryed a bit.Not sure where to find a new ribbon in Brussels, Belgium.So, is it a special typewriter ink they use?And is putting a few drops of pen ink on the ribbon safe?I love my typewriter, so I want to be extra careful.

I have a gorgeous 1930 Remington Portable 3 in red. Most everything works well now that it's cleaned up except for the carriage return lever and the tab button. The carriage return lever does not snap back; I have to push it back to use it again. Is there a spring that can be replaced? And the tab button only advances one space. Can that be adjusted? I've searched online and not found answers to these issues. Any advice is appreciated!

there is indeed a spring which should be on the return lever, but you’re gonna want to know what you’re doing before you tear into the guts to fix your tab/self-starter. my advice? get ANOTHER one and use it as a ‘looker’ machine while you fix the first one. drop me an email, typewriterjustice@gmail.com

Hi, I have a strange issue where the keys only strike when I move the typewriter to a tilted angle. When the typewriter is flat on the table the keys stop about halfway to the platen. Is there some locking system that I can reset?Thanks for the video, spot on for how to do the basics.
@TypewriterJustice6 жыл бұрын
Adrian -sounds like you're having an issue w the end-of-line-lock, which is designed to keep you from continually typing in the same spot once the right margin has been reached. It most likely just needs cleaning, and shouldn't be a serious issue to resolve. Email me typewriterjustice@gmail.com and I'll send you some pictures of what needs to be done.

TypewriterJustice thanks for the reply! That fixed it.

Charlie, is there a trick in taking the shell off. I want to do a thorough cleaning of the innards. I have a model 2.
@TypewriterJustice5 жыл бұрын
no trick, just careful observation & documentation of what you disassemble. put screws back into the holes they came out of as you go, and take multiple pictures of everything from multiple angles. do NOT remove the carriage!!

I am in India and I am currently owning a Remington portable typewriter(but it has 1 key) that I inherited from my great grandfather. How can I contact you to get the same properly restored. Would like to inform you that it currently works and I ofteh use it until few years back.
@TypewriterJustice3 жыл бұрын
hello! the best way to get it restored will be to find a local typewriter repair shop which is willing to do the work; there are quite a few good repair shops in India, check the list at site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html

Hey I recently got one and everything is working except when I type, the carriage doesn't move to the next spot. Also the space button does not work. Idk what model I have but it doesn't have the lever on the right side that raises the metal keys into typing position. Do you know what might be wrong?

Sasha Daich - not yet, but it's in the works! For now i just sell on eBay...but I always do videos for whatever I'm selling, so keep an eye on my channel. My next up is a burgundy Royal model P, with a Torpedo 18, SC Silent, Underwood 3-bank, and several others on the way soon.
