I just got Grampa's Remington De Luxe Model 5 out of the case. He bought it new and used it type out his sermons, I decided to use it for thank you cards--such a cool look! Someone had been here since him (probably Gramma) so the ribbon wasn't rolling. I tried to use the manuel that came with it but wow! was that ever Greek to me. This video was just what I needed! Thank you! Your explanation was clear and I'm in business now! The machine is in great condition! I'd love to send a pic but I don't see an option for that here, anyway you've seen plenty I'm sure. If I get stuck again, I will be back. I appreciate your assistance! P.S. "Portable"?!!! I'd love to show Grampa my iPad!!!

Charles, thanks for this video. I was having almost as much trouble with my new to me Remington Portable N0 1 as I am having with my Corona 4. I had no idea what those little c cups were for outside the ribbon spindles. Now I know. Still unresolved -- what about those spring loaded spindles -- there is some sort of foot that can be extended to clamp the ribbon spool down onto the platter. I guess it's optional...mine's also missing the right knob on the ribbon control rod so I guess I have no auto reverse in that direction. Hopefully, after this info, I can get my machine ribbon to spool...

Thanks, Charles, for this video. Here it is 2022 and you have helped me with my 1925 Remington. I ended up with a LOT more ink on my fingers than you did. Do you recommend that this machine stay mounted to its base when in use?

i’m happy to help! :) re the baseplate, i DO recommend they stay attached for use - it eliminates the possibility of losing the screws or baseplate, and also protects the internal mechanisms of the machine. If the machine is going to be living in one spot for regular, daily use then sure, take it off - but if it’s a ‘Sunday driver’ then it’s a good rule of thumb to leave it intact. Either way, new rubber feet will make life a lot better for both you AND your Remi, so consider picking up a set!

I have just received replacement ribbon spools from ebay for my Remington De Luxe model, only to find that they don't fit, as spool holes on replacements are too small. The spools on your video look the same diameter/type as mine, so I'm wondering if you could tell me what the specific name of these replacement ribbons are and/or where I could order them from? Lisa

if you have the original metal spools for your machine, any standard half-inch/13mm ink ribbon will work; just wind the ribbon over to your existing spools by hand. if you don’t have the metal spools, you will need to look for a set of them on ebay!

it's possible, but somewhat tricky. A lot of the time it can be a matter of simply striking the key too hard; try to hit the keys as lightly as possible while still getting a good print, and see if that makes a difference. If it really drives you crazy, take a trip the repairman! There is a wealth of information to be had at your local repair shop...and there is a list of repair shops at site.xavier.edu/polt/typewriters/tw-repair.html

+Seth Eldridge sorry for the slow reply -- yes, I service the Portable 1, 2, 3, 5, and Streamliner. The most common problem with these models is degraded rubber on the feed rollers(which I can remedy), followed closely by troubles with the ribbon transport & reversal mechanisms(which i can remedy). Oruginal spools are often harder to find than the typewriters...keep your spools, wind new ribbon them

Cassidy Rossman - assuming when you say 'belt' you mean the ribbon, you can just cut it down to fit. Most ribbons available these days come with 15 or 16 yards wound onto them, and these little Remington spools simply won't hold that much...and if you have too much ribbon on the spool, it won't wind up properly. Cut off what you don't need, and you'll be fine! Your spools should either have a metal clip or a tiny spike to attach the ribbon to the center post; once your ribbon is trimmed & reattached, just wind it up as usual.

TypewriterJustice I know that the Remington Model 5 Deluxe uses a universal ribbon, but when I buy a new ribbon, I have to cut the plastic that the ribbon is wound onto and I don't have the original spools. What should I do?

sorry for slow response - just saw your question. Hopefully you have tracked down some original spools by now, but if not...well, you need to. There aren't any plastic ones i know of that will really work right on a Remington Portable series machine, and the the metal ones are a bit hard to find. eBay, typewriter shops, and the FB Antique Typewriter Collectors group will be your best bets. Those spools are almost more rare than the machines themselves :) Good luck!

‘piece of junk design’ is a pretty harsh judgement! speaking from the perspective of someone who has used & serviced almost every model of manual typewriter made after 1920, i must disagree - the RemPort family of machines were designed with economy, efficiency, and durability in mind and they absolutely hit their intended target. it’s compact, tough as a tank, consistent, and gracefully simple. they’re definitely not high-output machines (like a standard or a more robust portable would be) but for ease of carry, durability, and ease of use on-the-go it’s a design family that has stood the test of time with flying colors, unlike many others of the same era. true that’s just my opinion, but i have definitely done my homework ;)
