This little beauty is one i worked up for a local buyer. It got a full chemical cleaning, fresh rubber on the platen, new feed rollers, new feet, and a polishing job that risks blinding the eye in direct sunlight. Quite a looker, and a solid typer to boot! Yeehaw!

TypewriterJustice Hi there. Thanks for this helpful video. I recently acquired this same typewriter- Remington 5. One problem I’m having is that text shows up half red and half black. The switch is on black. I’ve tried adjusting the ribbon numerous times, but haven’t solved the problem. Is there an adjustment or something I need to know about? Thanks so much. Ben

There also a small post in the back on the left (looking toward the back) that has a rod that goes under the keyboard. What is this for? Also, how do I clean the roller? I just got a 5 from my uncle's estate. It won't feed paper in past the bottom of the piece that holds the paper to the spool under where the keys strike the paper. Thanks! You taught me a few things I didn't know about this typewriter.
@TypewriterJustice

@@olli_k that rod in back is a caps-lock disengage, designed to prevent damage when closing the machine up in its carrying case. Re not being able to feed paper, you most likely need to replace the rubber on the feed rollers - early Remington Portables almost always will require it.

Hi, what are your recommendations for cleaning a Remington Rand Streamliner? We recently purchased one and it is in good condition but still has some dust and debris. Thanks!
@TypewriterJustice
@TypewriterJustice 2 жыл бұрын
Howdy! for dust & debris you just need a couple cans of compressed air & some small, cheap artists brushes, but you’ll probably want some odorless mineral spirits & a few Q-tips as well. Start by blowing out the typebar pivot segment and the area under the ribbon vibrator, and then stand the machine up on its rear end to blow out the area beneath the carriage; it’s important to note i say CANNED AIR(think ‘keyboard duster’) and not AIR COMPRESSOR- most home/shop air compressors will be too strong, blowing delicate springs out of position, and also will blow condensation & moisture into places it has no business being. Moisture equals rust. Get several cans(they usually come in multi-packs) so you can rotate through them as you go, since the cans will freeze with use & drop output. You can get a bag of cheap arts & crafts brushes at Hobby Lobby or Walmart, and usually they’re perfect for reaching the innards to remove eraser shavings, pet hair, ghost turds, and all the other nastiness the canned air didn’t get. Be mindful of springs! Specifically relating to the Streamliner, you will probably want to clean the transfer rod between the ribbon spools(it has a small worm gear on each end) since it’s usually gummed up like any other Remington Portable; look for the little tunnel it passes through under each spool, and give it some love. Other common spots to hit are the teeth of the gears on the typebars themselves (visible when a key is pressed) and the pivot for the return arm. Clean that shiny paint with care! You can get good results cheaply with microfiber cloths, ‘Mothers’ brand car care products, and a bit of gentle patience :) I hope this helps! Feel free to holler - the Streamliner is one of my all time favorites

Got a Remette…found the S/N which had eluded me before this video. December 1940. It has the original ribbon spools and there is life in the ribbon. Controls are different, ribbon installed incorrectly. Surprisingly good shape, carriage doesn’t space in lower case, hoping installing ribbon correctly fixes that. Space bar works, upper case works. Ribbon drive works. It is bare bones.

@@TypewriterJustice it’s cute for sure. Corrected the ribbon install. The margin rack doesn’t have a spring, not sure if that’s correct or the spring is missing. It is sometimes not spacing lower case so have to figure that out, probably binding somewhere or the thing is on the edge of its adjustment range, just guessing. Space bar works, upper case works, type alignment looks good.
@someonespadre
@someonespadre Жыл бұрын
@@TypewriterJusticefigured it out. The space bar is sticking down because the front of the frame is bent in. If I pull it up then it works. For whatever reason upper case doesn’t care but lower case does care. Pushing a shift slightly frees it to space with the space bar partially engaged. So have to decide how I’m going to straighten it. Other than that everything works perfectly. Except pretty sure a spring is missing which holds down the margin rack. It has an extra lever not in the manual which releases the ratchet but isn’t a variable spacer as far as I can tell. It doesn’t change the ratchet setting when reengaged.
@someonespadre

Okay I got it straightened enough in my makeshift frame shop. Now it works perfectly. That’s a fun little guy, the way the typebars fly up is entertaining. Another mechanical work of art, well built by the looks of it just bare bones.

I recently acquired 2 Remington Rand Model 5's ( WW2) era and am looking for a parts source. Nothing drastic, but I could use a new platen and the small spring that resets the carriage return lever to its ready position. Also,the "shift lock" lever has come off the "shift" lever and I don't know if a nut & bolt was used or if they were riveted and if a spring should also be present.I don't want to restore them just make them work.These are for a WW2 display and I want them to retain their look and character of their age.

it will just sort of kind of work instead of working the way it's supposed to. you wont hurt it. if yours works better by pulling it forward, it's either out of adjustment or needs new feed rollers...but if it WORKS(specifically if it works well enough for YOU) then that's the only thing to consider. Very pleasing video in every respect. While it did appear to be pretty inconsequential during the typing demo as to impact I was wondering what part of the ribbon-lift assembly did you suspect as the primary culprit. It likely would've provided me with too much temptation to investigate further, too, but I might have errantly caved and broken something difficult to replace. You're very good about explaining 'context' and you make very rationally-guided decisions, too. Your mind is perfectly suited to what you do. Mike Kirwan - Kenmore, WA

usually sticking typebars will require either cleaning at the pivot segment(curvy bit with all the slots, can be cleaned/flushed out with odorless mineral spirits or lacquer thinner), or adjustment of how the typebar fits at the type guide, which is the little metal ‘V’ that the typebars enter as they approach the page. If your typebars are sticking in the type guide, you can remedy this by first looking closely(and even judging by feel) to determine which side of the guide it is rubbing on, then gently flexing the typebar in the opposite direction until it moves freely in & out of the type guide. also, most models you can hold down the spacebar to disengage the escapement while checking the type guide.

(I tried machinesoflovinggrace & typewriterdatabase, but no luck finding this specific #.) Given what you have in your videos on a couple Rem 5's, I'm thinking either 1937 or 1940, though the # on mine is lower than the V974425 (1940) & V931716 (1937) that you clearly dated. This family of Remingtons uses a standard 1/2 inch ribbon (WITHOUT grommets or eyelets), but since the spools are smaller than normal you have to trim it down a bit. So long as you have the original metal spools for the machine, you should be fine - just wind the ribbon onto them. The spools are unique to the design, and are getting pretty darned hard to find so make sure whatever machine you buy has both of them. Best of luck!

that doohickey releases the capslock as the lid of the case closes, protecting the carriage from leveraged damage - a lot of these have loose carriage rails specifically from the case being closed on their carriages because that doohickey has a particularly weak reset spring. re the Monarch name, i’m not sure - they slapped that name around pretty liberally, if i’m not mistaken

Lovely machine (I have the Model Seven from 1936). I have to mention that the ribbon on this machine is not put on correctly (there are original manuals to this typewriter online). The ribbon should be looped around those two side posts, so the posts would not be showing (!) This corrects the tension for a better type print and also stops the occasional 'bunching up' of the ribbon that can happen when done as is shown in this presentation. Great machines really, and an otherwise very nice presentation.

@TypewriterJustice
@TypewriterJustice 5 жыл бұрын
Bill Sovitsky the rainbow shaped slide lever under the name is for the ‘touch control’ which will affect how hard the keys spring back when struck, which also indirectly affects the speed at which the typebars retract, harder keystroke = faster action. Remington uses a standard 1/2” ribbon, available on ebay or etsy, but it will need to be wound onto the existing spools, as this series of typewriter uses an unconventional style of spool not readily available these days. Also, interestingly, it looks like this machine caught just a bit of the black in with the red. Maybe that's more common than I thought it might be on those? Always bugged me but maybe I can finally just get past it and put a bicolor ribbon on there and enjoy my snazzy as all get out machine. :D

Kurisu Yamato - it's normally caused either by having a ribbon that isn't inked exactly half & half, or by the bichrome throw being off...and on a lot of machines you can only set the throw for a certain range of force at the keys, type too light or too soft & it'll print out of whack again. Then again, if you're doing serious writing on any member of the early Remington Portable family, you'd better have a high tolerance for slop & clatter, because these machines are consistently inconsistent, and personally i LOVE it! When i need precision & consistency, i reach for a Torpedo or an Olympia...when i need inspiration and fun, i grab a Remington :)

Good point - I do have right about 20 machines I can choose from to do some precision work on - like a bloody Selectric - but this? This is a machine you enjoy just for the sake of it. To hear that even your typing style can still affect the throw of the ribbon vibrator matches what I have experienced, which basically means it just plain happens and I shouldn't worry. At all. Only been a year that's been driving me crazy, haha! Thanks a ton, though - I think this conversation of the what, 4 I've had I think, with people regarding this machine (which I think you might have been involved with at one point previously, can't recall) has finally made me sure that it's just something these girls do. Can't complain really if that's the case :D Now to bichrome the HECK out of her! :D

“Now is the time for all good men…” was coined in the 19th century as was the the quick brown fox thing. I’m pretty sure they are in the public domain.

One question … where is the exclamation point?

most typewriters don’t have a dedicated key for either the ! or the number 1, because you can make the ! with an apostrophe over a period, and a lowercase L for the 1

Oh, on a side note, guess who just came into possession of their 2nd one of these? Needs a cleaning but nothing I can't handle. Still has the gold on the emblems!

Haha, if only I could. This little piggie is going to market - I'm certain someone local will give it a good home and if not? To eBay she goes. I know I can ship it fine, I learned from a professional ;)

Appending my other reply: It has some minor issues I've learned as I've cleaned it, and the emblems aren't as good as they originally looked to me (still nice) - a machine near on par with the one I got last year, but giving this one a good home is my priority.

maybe you’ve just never used a good one! Personally, i find them quite pleasant to use, very consistent and easy, When properly cleaned and adjusted, the touch on them is quite poppy and gives a very enjoyable experience (and a pretty good page of fair copy)
