People say it is a scam because it's virtual money, and holds no real value. Which is true. The value of Bitcoin is also very unstable, as everyday it can move =- $100. Personally, I would invest a little bit of money in Bitcoin. But I will just see it as something lots of people will invest in, just for the money - then at the end when a bunch of people withdrawl, the value will plummet. Or the bubble will burst. I don't think that companies or businesses will ever use Bitcoin for real, due to it being so unstable.

Telebubbies A lack of value isn’t in anyway indicative of a scam. The US dollar (and even gold) has no real value. Instead, value is derived from the process which create Bitcoin(digital mining through computing power), gold(physical mining), and the US dollar (borrowing/lending).

I ran a few algorithms in a program I wrote to make a (pretty rough but well thought out) prediction of the future of bitcoin's market value. What I got was Bitcoin reaching a low of around $4900-5000 by the end of October, Bitcoin jumping from a low of $7000 to a new high of slightly over $9000 between Jan and Feb and reaching $10,000 on March 1st, 2018. Keep in mind, this prediction is based purely on statistics and does not hold any guarantees in the real world.

I am not an expert economist, but this Metcalf's Law explanation confuses me. How could it be possible to determine the number of users? The number of addresses does not reflect the number of users. Exchanges like Coinbase hold hundreds of thousands of private keys. Attempting to identify the number of users seems impossible to me and the margin for error has to be enormous.

Also important to note that after a disaster, gold isn't much use either. After the hurricane in Puerto Rico - people were getting terrible prices for their gold. Generators, gas, food, and water were worth much more. So if you're preparing for a disaster, buying actual usable goods make more sense - but if you're preparing for a hard devaluation of the dollar, Bitcoin has a much stronger argument against gold. Easier to store, protect, and transfer, more easily divisible and much harder to confiscate than gold. Can buy in extremely small quantities and don't have to worry about buying fake or debased Bitcoin. Banks and governments can freeze your assets and prevent you from accessing your gold, not the case with Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies. Not to say that gold is bad, it's history as sound money shouldn't be overlooked, but cryptos should be taken seriously.

We use to talk about Metcalfe's Law back in 2013 on Bitcointalk as a means to predict the future value Bitcoin. The whole hypothesis fell apart during 2014 and it was thrown out. BETI (Bitcoin Exponential Trend Index) seems to be a much system and has much more predictive power. Using it, we expect Bitcoin to reach around $10k by the end of 2017, around $20k in early 2018, then a huge crash. Should recover within a year after that and start a new bubble. Over $100k before 2020. Read Chaos by James Gleick for an understanding of the chaotic growth pattern.
