Instead of washing out the roller between coats, I put mine in a ziplock bag and seal out any air. This keeps the roller or foam brush from drying without having to introduce water which can cloud the varnish. This method works for same day or next day varnish jobs.

Hello there! What would you recommend to varnish an oil painting? I have an old (beautiful) painting, and I was hoping to revive it a little bit; I thought the varnish would make the colors a little more shiny. Maybe a spray varnish, since the canvas is already framed, which will make it a little harder to roll the roller to the corners/edges? Thank you so much!!

If you use a rolling tray, it’ll probably cause the furnished to bubble up a lot. Don’t do that! Poor directly on the canvas also, you should do a test canvas first to make sure it works to make sure you’ve got the technique down.

great video! I need to photograph some canvases - but they are mixed media. I live in Scotland so can't always get outside to photograph them because of the weather. My problem is the black in the one of them reflects light no matter what I do. I am bouncing light off umbrellas to soften it, but it still isn't right. I thought about applying a matt varnish to it, to take off the sheen - how much vibrancy would a matt take out of the painting? Would you recommend that, or maybe go with a Satin instead?
@KrystleColeArtАй бұрын
Matte varnish will take a little vibrancy out of it, I would suggest working on fixing your lighting rather than varnishing your painting to fix the shine when you’re trying to photograph for prints. Any way that you can try to make those lights more diffuse? You said that photographing outside isn’t an option, but is there a day that you could photograph outside? Because this will really be your best way to not have shine. That’s what I do. It’s best to photograph either on a very grey day where there’s not much sunshine, or photograph while in the shade.

Thank you! I use the exact same materials you have, but the foam roller covered the whole painting in bubbly varnish (teenietiny bubbles, but thousand of them) and I had to apply more coats of paint to save it... But now I am so sacred to varnish my paintings. Do you have a tipp for me? Thanks so much in advance!
@starmazaheri74483 жыл бұрын
I saw in a video that with a brush we should not go up and down the surface too much as it will create bubbles, but as you mention, seems even with a foam it does same. The video recommended to just go from up to down or use a spray varnish: kzbin.info/www/bejne/oWO3epd-r9eAnM0
@NiazDokrat2 жыл бұрын
I think that may happen if you press too hard with the foam roller. I havent tried it as yet though but if seen that happen while painting with a roller
@KrystleColeArt Жыл бұрын
If you see bubbles after you have rolled it on, gently roll over your entire canvas one more time. But you must do all of this very quickly. If you wait too long it will mess it up. If you gently roll over everything one last time, it will flatten out the bubbles. You might also try using a little less varnish and putting it on more gently with the roller.

I varnish all of my canvas print prior to mounting to stretcher bars. It's not 100% necessary though, but it does make it so that the canvas doesn't get scuffed up when you stretch it onto stretch your bars. Unless you're just framing them (if you're framing them with glass over the front like in a traditional picture frame and you do not need to varnish).

How do I avoid air bubbles with roller? I find that it leaves tiny air bubbles. I know that this can be remedied with a light swishing of a heat gun but I live in my van and don’t have a source for high wattage tools.
@KrystleColeArt6 ай бұрын
I've never use a heat gun on any of my paintings, wouldn't suggest it. But as for air bubbles with the roller, I don't usually ever have them. I roll it on gently, it is self-leveling. So I've never had any bubbles end up in there when dry. But always test out varnishing before you varnish something you care about a lot just to make sure it's going to work out. So do a test canvas first, see if it dries out bubbles. If there are bubbles, it might be your application technique. You could be using too much varnish, rubbing the roller too hard against the canvas. Test, and try again.

I just use a folding table I got on Amazon. Sometimes people put down some paper or plastic sheeting so you don't get paint or varnish on the table. I don't because I have a table that I paint on, so I'm not really really worried about that. But you can always lay something down on top of a table.

Hi, is there any reason you don't use a wider roller?
@KrystleColeArt2 жыл бұрын
I feel like the smaller roller gives me more control to get the varnish applied evenly
