The sudden pop sound when the needle goes into the air bladder is great. The noise that the air makes when it's rushing out of the air bladder is amazing.

I have always wondered the following: 1. What causes the swim bladder to malfunction like this to begin with? 2. If you vent the fish, then release it, how do you know that after the venting hole heals that the same exact thing will happen again and the fish will end up floating again?

According to one of the gulf coast states Fish & Wildlife agency, venting causes no Ling term damage. They have caught previously documented vented fish the following year. Healthy and bigger. Their instructional videos are here on YT somewhere. Just saw them last night.

bit of a random one but can i do this with my oscar fish who's stuck at the top of my tank because he has an inflated swim bladder?

As a last resort yes. Smaller gauge needle and the right amount of clove oil in the water of an isolated tank to knock them out. Clove oil works like an anesthetic. The right amount will immobilize a fish and allow you to do the surgery but too much will outright kill. You should do your research but yes it’s possible
