we in Michigan use ice and water shield under the valey run it like how you would the metal valley and then lay the metal valley and then get another peace of ice and water or grace cut in half long ways so you have 2 peaces and lay them 5 to 6 inches from the center of the valley in order to cover nail in that area... thats the best way to do it brothers... no leaks!!! and we chalk our line 3 in from the top of the valley and 4 in on bottom
@russelltech76916 жыл бұрын
that's how we install it in Indiana as well. cover's the nails and an extra leak barrier.

Bad idea in snowy/rainy climate. Probably O.K. where dry but I highly doubt it meets mfg. specs. Water will stay in gaps on valley roofing that's place "sideways" and eventually damage/lift it especially when it freezes + get into the nails easier. Gaps need to run down hill as straight as possible just like every other shingle on the roof and you need to cut small 45 degree corner off each shingle on top in valley to release water. Glue the seam a couple inches inboard. I'm from the frozen north, though. Good video, thanks for doing it - just my opinion and I could be totally wrong.

I do my valleys the same way. Never had a problem. Only thing I do different is I don't chalk the lines on W valley. I have a four foot "yard" stick that's 2" wide and I set my starter (header) shingle to that. I just slide it up as I go. It works slick and saves me steps. You'll find that the people who criticize you are the ones who really don't know as much as they think they do. They might have a roof or two under their belts but that's about it. I tell them to come back when they have about ten-thousand or so squares behind them and then we'll talk.

When i saw this video i knew right away that an open valley will be what i'm gonna go for, doing my house roof for the first time by myself and it when all well. Being a Canadian living on east coast with hard winter weather i was a bit worried but now that i done it and saw the shingle bounding with the metal sheet from hot sunny days i have no worries now for the incoming winter....e Eric Garcia thanks a lot for this video, one of the few very well made roofing valley video on here. Yeah nails in the valley is a no go. You also don't nail through the metal you nail so only the head catches the side. This way you don't get the wrinkles you have. Also your using way to many nails it's 4 nails a single not 6 or 7. I don't get these guys that are about doing quick and having tail light warranties. Ps never had a leak on any roofs I've installed but fixed plenty from others that wouldn't come back to own their mistakes

some people will tell you to seal the shingles to the metal after you pop the line.once the son hits the shingles, they seal and stick to the metal. the only thing different here is we install ice and water under the metal,then cut a piece of ice and water in half and run it on both sides of the metal. however I've seen it both ways, and personally I've never had a problem with it. 👍

It really doesn't matter how long you have been roofing if what you are doing is incorrect. There are things that we are required to go by like building codes and manufacturer's specifications. Also when you were nailing fast it looked as though you were nailing high (above the nail line in the single-ply). Every bundle of shingles has instructions to the specifications for installation and if you don't follow those specifications then later when the homeowner has a problem with the roof and the shingle manufacturer's rep comes out and inspects the roof, they will deny it because of faulty installation.

great work where i live we get a lot of rain and snow, so i use ice and water shield under the w valley as well as over the w valley, (not over it completely but just to where your shingles are. One 1 thing i dont personally like, is it looked like you are using 3-tab shingles for starter, i know a lot of roofers that do, but i much prefer an actual starter strip, although using the 3-tab doesnt affect the standard warranty of shingles, it will not pass for a gaf golden pledge or system plus warranty.
@Garciasroofing9 жыл бұрын
+John Rawlins you are right ! I run out of starters ...I ordered 2 bundles and I was short 2 pieces at the valley area...LOL I don't like to use 3 tabs shingles as starters because the starter bundle gives me more lineal feet than the bundle of 3 tabs. I also start working out of the valley and just run it back. Much faster and you only have one cut. I start working out of the valley on both sides that way it's only to do the valley cut, clip the corner, and run it back to the eve. I go up 3 or 4 courses before cutting the ends. I just find it's faster when you have 1 person taking care of the valleys while the other guy is finishing the runs up the roof

Is it your opinion that installing a metal W-Valley is superior to standard overlapping of the shingles?
@1971SuperLead8 жыл бұрын
I think it depends on where you live. I live in the high desert of California with a 3 in 12 roof, and I think a metal valley is a bad idea for me because the weather here changes by 30 degrees everyday. Since metal has a different expansion rate than shingles, it causes a lot of friction and therefore...wear. The metal also gets searing hot in the sunshine, causing the shingles nearby to overheat, and then warp and deteriorate. I really mulled over the idea of using metal or not, and ended up just going with a closed cut valley with an inverted 36" wide rolled roofing for a membrane running verticle all the way up the valley, underneath the shingles. I had a lot of synthetic paper under the valley as well. This was my first roofing job ever. I did all the work by myself. We've had a lot of rain with wind over the last couple months and the roof worked flawlessly. I did the closed cut valley in my own special way. Since I had a lot of time on my hands I cut the upper shingles so that the upper top corner butted up against the lower edge of the lower layer of shingles. Doing this was time consuming, but it made the second layer of shingles lay twice as flat inside the valley, giving a lot more protection from dirt, wind and wind driven rain. It will also keep those shingles cooler as they are laying flat and being cooled by the attic air. I really need to make a video showing this, but it's easy to understand once you see how the shingles meet in the valley. It's just a really bad idea to have gaps under the shingles where wind, dirt and water can sneak under and cause all kinds of problems, especially on a low slope roof in a high wind area.

Shingles need to be installed in a north/south orientation.....always. Running a shingle parallel to a valley is a shortcut used to benefit the shingler, not the homeowner. This is especially true with laminate shingles with tapered top tabs. The tabs are at a 90 degree angle to the water flow minimum, which could direct water away from the valley rather than towards it. Roofing vs shingling 101.
@woodpeckerroofing932 жыл бұрын
This is a sharks tooth pattern in a metal valley for shingle application how can you get better? State Certified Journeyman Roofer/waterproofer & contractor approved. What he did wrong was work into the valley instead of out he cut twice books (pattern) on the rake edge and his tie into the sharks tooth valley. I almost always used this style valley especially with gravey 4/12 pitch, it runs out perfectly with points on the line. This valley is in manufacturers specs, if you were a certified installer you would know that. On steep you cut into valley like he did, because pitch affects pattern. Nail guns work both ways if you use your brain don't have to be lefty to run lefty, just practice video maker. Stay thursty!

hey eric i've roofed for 3 years now, and i'm in a city where boards are common. We shingle them with laminates but sometimes the nails go through the nail line (thick part)and misses a board, so i have to nail an inch on top of the shingles nail line to bite a board. Now i believe its no big deal, and the person who trained me would just do it like that but my new boss makes us carry a tar gun around so we have to tar under the shingles that don't get hit in the nail line, which i think is over kill. Its got me paranoid that thats how its supposed to be done, which is so time wasteful and useless in my opinion, and this is the type of crew that wants every detail pretty and nice, mean while noones ever stepping one foot on the roof again.
@Garciasroofing8 жыл бұрын
I don't think it makes any difference if you apply roof cement or not , because the 2 shingles together hold that nail in place , you supposed to rise of lower your nailing patter to hit the board. Probably your boss has his own ideas , but the code requires to hit the board , also if you have a crooked nail, you supposed to hit it with the hammer to prevent damaged to the shingle on top with it's sharp head. you only supposed to apply roof cement when the nail is between the join of 2 shingles and water will run on top of that nail, or install a piece of starter under the water line. some roofers don't care , but again every roofer works different , in my case , I try to stick to the building codes strictly because I have to pass inspection on 90% of my jobs. the other thing is , if something goes wrong I'm liable for the next 5 years on a shingles roof , 10 years on a tile roof and so on . When you work for a company ...you don't have be responsible for the labor warranty, at the end your day , you get paid and go home . It all depends how you work out the deal , probably your boss had water leaks in the past and don't want them anymore .
