I think a student should begin right away in learning the rudiments or the wrist/hand motions of vibrato. Don’t make it some mysterious and advanced technique for the gifted. It’s not that difficult to develop a basic vibrato which can be improved upon as time goes by.
@TheOnlineViolinTutor
@TheOnlineViolinTutor 5 жыл бұрын
@@Jleed989 A beginner should not attempt vibrato for at least a year as the basics need to settle in. I do not agree with teachers not teaching it until many years after they start as I agree with you, that it is something they should learn closer to the beginning, so that by the time they can play more intermediate and upwards music, the vibrato will have developed nicely. However, attempting it before at least a year can be damaging to the basics as they must be learned and settle in first - which only time can do, as you cant accelerate time.

Your not the only one but at minimum you need those basics or it's going to hold you back. I'm there along with you but if we waste our trip me doing stuff we are not ready for we are missing out on all the good practice we could be getting instead. I'm focused on doing my scales and and I'm going to put vibrato on hold till I'm more ready. In the mean time I'm going to look at what she suggested. I don't agree with the year thing tho cause it's all dependent on how much you practice. If you practice for 30 min everyday for a year and another does 2 or 3 hours or more every day obviously the other person will be ready quicker.

Thank you so much for your tutorials! I played the violin for 6 years from elementary to high school and "cheated" on my vibrato by performing with "finger" vibrato which my teachers never corrected. I am now 26 and have since come back to the violin and am having to completely re-train my hands' muscle memory. While it is painful and mind numbing to relearn my technique, your videos are making it much simpler than it would have been! Long story short= Practice, practice, practice the CORRECT technique and save yourself a lot of wasted time! Thank you for your enthusiasm and instruction!

Thanks. This is my fourth year of playing (albeit inconsistently). I started at about 47. I’ve been attempting to practice vibrato on and off for the last two years but always give up. I have decided to persist and crack it this year. So far, I’ve been trying consistently for about a fortnight and I’m happy to say that it doesn’t sounds completely awful anymore. So thanks Alison. You’re right. I will keep plugging away every day. I am determined. 2020 - My year of vibrato!

Very good advice, nice updated video. I'll put my two bobs worth in as it may help some people... As an adult beginner, I also struggled for a long time. I started with wrist vibrato, but would get violin shake, and wrist moving erratically, first joints of fingers hardly moving, etc. Then progress stagnated. If you are the same, I suggest trying arm vibrato, & persevere with it for six months. Initially it feels harder, takes more energy, harder to keep your thumb in same place, & plenty of violin shake. Whats it does is forces the first joints of all fingers to move, the wrist to move slightly, the thumb to be kept in same place, & all arm/hand joints will be learning to have a smooth movement. But, when you return to wrist vibrato, it will be much easier. You must be patient & stick with it, sometimes you have to attack a problem from a different angle. For some, vibrato comes alot easier, others like me, have to try a different approach. Also, as a bonus, you'll have two vibrato techniques which you can use depending on the sound you want. :) Anyway, that's my experience.

I've been playing the violin for 7 years, been trying to properly vibrato for about 4-5 years. To anyone thinking it's hard, it is hard. D: My problem is that I tense my whole arm when I vibrato when it's supposed to be nice and loose. My orchestra teacher, who isn't a violinist, tries to help me but it's easier to vibrato on a cello (the instrument she plays) vs a violin/viola. ^^; My private violin teacher is now helping me work up to my vibrato skills and told me to start looking through KZbin videos and online tutorials outside of practice to get a feel for what vibrato is supposed to be. So far, the way you explain is MUCH better than my orchestra teacher! Now let's see if I can get my vibrato to not be so tense.

This is the way I started learning vibrato but recently I was watching others teach it with their thumb on the side and rolling the finger forward and back (rather than sided to side). I was beginning to think maybe I should relearn it. Thanks for the reassurance that I am on the right track!

You and my teacher are exactly the same and she taught me the wrist vibrato and I didn't know there's an arm vibrato Lol! I'm gonna combine your technique and hers. Your also right that you have to do vibrato constantly to able to do it and I've been doing it every time I play and I'm getting there. Thanks 🙃

My teacher said plan on practicing vibrato every day for at least a year. One key is not to do it for very long in the beginning because your hand will tense up than you won’t be able to do it. I am now at about month six, seems to be getting easier. Started working on arm vibrato because that is what my teacher uses. I am now leaning towards wrist vibrato.

It took me a year to get my finger muscle memory to do vibrato correctly, and continue to practice correct finger position daily. I had a violin teacher make me play with a sewing thread spool in my hand to get my fingers lifted high enough to come straight down, which helps vibrato. He had a pretty vibrato like yours Alison, so with practice, I did too!

I have literally just gotten a violin, I play several instruments, none of which would I consider myself "pro" but perhaps intermediate on all. I ha e been watching your Videos for almost a week now. I especially love your sincerity and Honesty, and what I should expect of myself. I know violin will be by far my biggest challenge yet. Thank you so much for sharing your beautiful talent, and taking my journey one slow step at a time. The biggest thing I ha e learned so far, is that this is NOT a guitar on ANY level. Haha. Wow what an instrument. The whole tuning peg verses tuning key was a huge eye opener of the challenge I just took on. The violin I chose to start with is an Aklot student violin. I did a review, which technically means nothing because I don't know what a good violin is. Would you consider reviewing this brand?

Hey Alison I've been watching your videos for a little more than a year now. I just want to say thankyou because you helped me choose what violin to buy and all these videos are really helpful. There are a lot of violin tutorials but I find that yours are the most helpful; that's why I subscribed. I've been playing for about a year now. Recently I haven't been practicing, it just seems kind of boring now. I don't really feel motivated to but I don't want to give up because all those lesson my parents payed for; it just seems like a waste. I'm not sure if I should keep on going or stop. I wanted to be good violin player like you I've told myself that. I was amazed because you're so fukin good. I don't know anymore though what im suppose to do. So I was wondering if you could give me some words of wisdom lol

Perhaps its what you are playing that is not motivating you - I usually find when students lose their 'mojo' its usually due to the music. Decide what music you like and want to play, then find some for your level. I have a lot of easy stuff on my Patreon page and you can also request for me to write out and arrange pieces into easy versions: www.patreon.com/theonlinepianotutor Not only that, but there are hundreds of pieces of sheet music available there. Take a look and any questions about it, just ask.

Well, I come from the guitar, been playing electric guitar half my life, and it took me 4 years to learn proper vibrato on the guitar... The principles seems to be the same... Although I've been playin the violin for solid 4 days, so what do I know. So please correct me if I'm wrong

Thank you! Very clear! Can I send you my hand for a few weeks to train it, then send it back? Just kidding! I’ve recently started working on vibrato with a few minutes each practice, and although seems like several months to get under control, it is actually very encouraging to know not to expect immediate control. Also I am an adult learner so maybe a little longer? Again, thank you!

Hi, Alison! I have a question. I have played guitar for many years and I'm just starting to learn to play the violin. Would you say that having prior experience on another (however different) stringed instrument would give me an advantage as far as speeding up the learning curve? I don't want to rush anything by any means. I understand and have a newfound respect the amount of time it takes to even get the fundamentals right. Any thoughts? Thank you so much for your instruction. :) You are my favorite KZbin teacher. You are *THE* online piano & violin tutor!

Yes, if you play any other instrument it will help as you will know the music/theory side of things and you can then concentrate on learning how to play the instrument itself.

I have been playing the guitar for many years and can easily do vibrato on it, now learning the violin for two years (with a twenty year break inbetween) and find vibrato on the violin to be totally different - still trying to figure it out. Thanks Alison for the video.

Hi. I'm a newb to this violin stuff. And I'm still making progress on learning how to play it nicely. Is it okay to learn vibrato now but I won't include it on my daily music practice, just for the sake of how to do it, so when the time that I'm feeling confident comes, I'll be adding vibrato to it. Sorry for my english. Have a good day!
