Great video Mr. Happy and Little Miss Sunshine! Yes, when I was growing up in the USA we never knew when someone would just come and knock on our door unannounced! Since we never locked our door during the daytime sometimes people would just come in and yell, "Hello!?" Good information for Japan here! Thanks!

I am going to disagree with Victor a tad. Maybe for brothers/sisters we don't, but I would say typically the trend in America is when visiting, we also bring a gift. It might even be just a six pack of beer when we visit, but I would say we usually do bring something.
@BettyBird
@BettyBird 9 жыл бұрын
Dan Harayda I think it really depends on the circle the only person who brings gifts to my house is an older sister and it's because she visits so infrequently it's usually on a holiday. I never take anything anywhere either,not saying I wouldn't it's just so highly informal in the family/friends circle I'm in I've always thought it quaint watching shows seeing gifts of wine and flowers when visiting.

Might be different in the US, but here in Norway, we usually call beforehand, and check if they are home, and actually want a visit. As for gifts, only really brought when invited for a meal or a special occation, if just a social visit, not as much.... though last time i was at a friends house, i did buy him a wall clock... As for in comparison to Japan, we're still not as polite, even if we make sure to call first. On the shoes pointing towards the door, i seem to remember hearing sometime, when you take off the shoes, there's a social norm of sorts of what not to do? like... do you take both off then put on the indoor shoes? i seem to recall something about not stepping on the floor with socks?

Thank you! This video is so reassuring! So I am watching this cuz today... I went to my Japanese’s friends house and I was super awkward cuz I didn’t want to mess any thing up. I brought a box of chocolates, box of tea, and coffee...They seemed so overwhelmed with the gift I felt like maybe I over did it!? Maybe they do not have this costume in Japan?!! I felt as if I gave them gold bars or something!

Hi Tomoko, that practice of bringing stuff over sounds very similar to what my parents used to do in Chile. Maybe it's something only south pacific countries do. Is it also rude to turn down a coffee or dinner invitation in Japan?

lol I do a lot of cooking and crafting so there's usually something somewhere or some kind of chaos and it would just feel crowded if more people were added into the mix if things aren't put away haha my hubby and I like to be comfortable so our "appropriate" company attire would be actually wearing clothes lol >.

when you said Arigatō, is that due to it being a informal meeting of friends? I am finding it difficult to know when to use that verses the more formal Arigatōgozaimashita (or is it more polite?)

question about visiting: If I am new to the neighbourhood, and want to get to know the neighbour. Can I get a box of sweets and ring their bell randomly, just to say: "hi, I'm OOO I'm new to the neighbourhood, nice to meet you" or would it be a bother? And if that's not the way, then how is the proper way to meet the neighbours ? :D
