An actor had bowed to me at 90 degrees to show me gratitude for taking photos of his lecture on the Noh Theater for the Japan Foundation in Los Angeles. I was impressed and suprised because I had never experienced someone deeply bowing before. This was a fun video, Tomoko sensei!

I think that one is used in extreme situations when wanting to express how extreme your emotions are, whether you are being apologetic, thankful, or if you are begging someone. Then again this is just what I think im is not entirely sure so take my words with a grain of salt :D .

If you're doing the 15 degree bow, is it ok to just lower the head and curl the shoulders forward? Kind of round the upper part of your back? Or do you have to always have a straight back?

Great and informative video. I myself have learned the proper way to bow in aikido or in general in a martial arts for entering/ exiting a dojo and sensie/ partners before and after training in a martial arts class. Some day when I come to Japan as a language student or a martial art student or even an assistant English teacher I would know how to respect and fit in as a normal person in the Japanese society. Although trying to find a retainable Japanese language on Okinawa or on the main land Japan defiantly hard to find due out dated websites or no reviews about the Japanese language schools. I have heard about Go Go Nihon language schools seems to be a great and reputable school that every foreigner or people i have talked to about and went to saying its a great school and the price is some what reasonable. If you have recommendation Mrs Tomo I would like to hear them because I truly want to learn Japanese with in Japan but due to the lake of research for other Japanese language schools is a road block for me because I am living in the USA and not knowing anyone who is in Japan to give me some inside about what companies are really reputable and being open up to foreigners or other people who want to go to Japan to learn Japanese and learn about Japan history. It really doesn't have to be in a particular part of Japan I want some kind of reputable place and a reasonable priced tuition to be able to learn Japanese in Japan. Great video and keep up with great content. I will be making my first video blog/ introduction next month and I can't wait to start a video blog which so many people and yourself have made me want to do a video a blog for such a long time. Sorry for the long comment. Hopeful my point gets across and hope to see what you have to say about my some what of a question and statement in my comment about your video.

Thank you for your comment. In Japan, We studied English at least for 6 years in school . But we don't speak English well. I found people who speak English fluently have lived in foreign country, studying abroad or living for work. I never lived in foreign country. So I go to private school (Victor's school) and make friends with foreigners, and travel abroad as much as I can. but still can not speak fluently, but become understandable what they are talking. I don't know schools for Japanese so much, sorry! but I think you can use the internet, you tube, to study Japanese. First it's good to start with text books, then have a chance to speak and talk in Japanese! oh,,, not have a chance, make a chance! (^_^)

***** Thanks for your reply.Those are all good points. It is true for anyone who's learning a new language either it be a self studio, studying in that country language with in its own country, traveling or even working aboard. By the way your English have improved so much. The real big whoops that I myself and other people who are learning English and people who grown up with English is the writing which does screw up a lot of people because of the grammar stuff, chronological order, every in between and spelling. Well it is like that with every language that human beings learn which we learn the rules, grammar and writing system with in that language. Sorry for the long comment (give of gab here due to being Irish :) ). You've already know about this but English is not only spoken in the United Kingdom it is also spoken in the United States. I know everyone knows what two countries speak English which is not a brainer :). Pretty much any one who wants to learn English travel to either or both countries to learn British English in the United Kingdom or the American English in the United States, self studie or even take private lessons. Keep up with the great content with teaching the Japanese language or anything you do with you're channel. I myself will be doing my introduction to myself and what my channel will become which I think I have mention with my above comment. Also I would like to meet you or at less talk to you in real life so I can improve my Japanese language skills and actually to say I have a Japanese friend or at less to say I know a Japanese person who I learn from ermm I have two Japanese people that I have learned from you and Comical Reina. Well heres to another community college fall semester coming in August which will be a fine line of stress like no other semester because i have one online course and a 4 credit hour class. Not to mention making friends either it be threw KZbin or in real life and finding my significant other. I think it was a bad idea to say that my New Years resolution for 2014 was making new friends inside or outside of college and not to mention finding a girlfriend which both things are still work in progress. Includes going to Japan or any other countries who are looking to intergrade English as their second officially language. I have a lot to accomplish before year 2020 before I turn 30 and if the year 2020 and if I have a great paying job I will be coming to Toyko Japan for the 2020 olympics or even a language school or a language school before the year 2020. Being a 24 year old male I have a lot to do with little to no money to do so and not to mention being single who never date his whole entire life. Speaking of Japanese language books. Do you have any recommendations on getting Japanese book? That would be at less a bigger help that is if you can think of any books I should get to self study Japanese. Including if the Japanese books give the correct way of learning Japanese instead of books that are written here in the USA that gives the wrong impression of learning Japanese. I have learned so many Japanese words from your videos. I would recommend if your still doing some Japanese lessons could you talk about the Japanese alphabet or at less tell us the correct name for the alphabet for Japanese. Personal I feel like learning a new a language with inside a class room because I am a visual and audio leaner. Having something fiscal to look at and have a person who knows her or his own language also comes in handy incase if I don't know a certain order or if I miss pronoun a word and ever in between for that language. I have recently learned Mandarin Chinese with a C, which a C is better than getting a D or an E which would have effect on the 2.556 grade point average because it was a 4 credit hour class at my college even if I had another class. With Chinese I had little issues hearing what my professor was saying at less for the test taking because there are set of Pinyin alphabet that sounds like the last letter she repeated and she said it a little to fast. I think she had a retainer which made it hard to hear speak. Besides that I was in a US community college and learning Chinese or any other language kind of puts a hold onto taking your newly found language skills to the next level because that English is spoken in the US with other languages but mainly English :). If I ever was in China I would have became better at Chinese than when I first signed up and started learning Chinese the first day. I am afraid of loosing my newly founded Chinese language skills because I hardly see any Chinese people around my area. I live near Dearborn Michigan which is the second largest Middle Eastern population and other race that makes up that area such as African American, Polish (Polish people are mainly in Hamtramck MI, I am American by birth with Polish, German, Irish, Scottish and little bite of British) and few other races I can't think of. In my case it would have been a better idea to take Arabic or Spanish as a second language because of the area I live near speaks either Arabic or Spanish, the Spanish people live in Detroit MI. All in all is that knowing what countries and or areas of that countries speaks those language so you really don't loose those new language skills. I had taken like Elementary Mandarin Chinese which is the basic of learning Chinese and not the Cantonese Chinese which is whole another set of rules that Mandarin Chinese have.

Thank you for your reply, and I respect you have a purpose to learn Japanese. I'm just thinking if I can do something in 2020 olympics..... but just thinking . My age, My daughter, My dog, we live in Nagoya .... (--;) I recommend the biginners read the children books, but You are advanced, so, how about Japanese movie script? or a novel which is written by はやみねかおる (青い鳥文庫). Japanese junior high school students read the book. Teachers recommend I read English books for junior high or high school students.

***** Thanks for which movies and books I should try :). I have taken elementary Mandarin Chinese language, I know some characters from Chinese does carry into Japanese which will be a great journey and finding which one they are. I do have a purpose of coming to Japan either for the 2020 olympics and I have over stated about going to Japan to be an assistant English teacher which might happen still but I am still struggling in the community college level and not to mention the coast of a university is fare great expanse than a community college. There were two movies I have watched before one was called Spirited Away (English dubbed) and the second movie I can't remember the name of it because I watched back in 2007/ 2008 when we still had satellite television. I thin introductions are a bite easier than trying to translate Japanese or in my case it was Chinese was the hardest thing I did in the Mandarin Chinese language besides the major test that we had to take. Your always welcome for my replies :). I live in Redford MI which is like sandwich between Dearborn MI, Livonia MI and Detroit MI (If i haven't mention the Dearborn or Detroit before). Sorry for my previous comment with the 119 line with no paragraphs, I guess I have a gift of gab due to being half Irish. I can't wait until I see Japan in the year 2020 which I would be in my early thirties like I have stated before. Hopeful my plans will work out for assistant English teaching in Japan or any were in the world or have a great job so I can travel to Japan for the 2020 olympics and not to mention finding my significant other. I am chewing off a lot more than I can chew off, in other words huge dreams to forfill :).

what about eyecontact during the bow? disrespectful? I remember from the movie the karate kid, before a fight in tournament they bow but while keeping eyecontact, in order to avoid a sneaky hit. Also some details on who bows first, or maybe at the same time,...

about eycontact, Karate and Judo and Kendo are special. There are their own way, I think. Generally when greeting, we look at each other during bowing(15°). But when 30°, 45〜90°, First we look, and then bow. because bowing deeply toward to ground. and the person who find somebody bows first. when we apologize or find a boss, we bow first. Thanks!

Shouldn't the boss bow back 15°C when the worker bows 60°? I always thought that you only bow 90° to the Emperor....

Hi! Frederick! Yes, we bow 90℃ to Emperor. and sometimes to Boss, too. 45℃〜90 ℃ is OK to Boss. and depends on Boss's personality. Thank you, always!

@Nifuruc
@Nifuruc 10 жыл бұрын
no it's not rude... but most japanese know that foreigners sometimes don't know the proper way to bow... so most of the time they are glad when you behave properly ^^ so... try to be polite and bow at least 15°... you'll see how big of a difference it makes...

Poor Regan getting stretched out by two wonderful ladies! Another excellent instruction, thank you! I do have two questions, though. 一: Are there any tricks to knowing you are at 15 and 30 degrees? Or is it something gained with practice? 二: As I have a bad back, what would I do in place of a bow if my back went out, or would I just have to go through with it?
@tomokotomoko
@tomokotomoko 10 жыл бұрын
1) just greetings, a little bow (ok with less than 15 degree) . 30 degree = formal situations 2) Oh, sorry for your back. You don't have to do 90 degree. ok with as much as you can. Thanks!!

Ok, at a 13y.o's reading level, I would say that, John Green's "Paper Towns" may be a bit of a challenge, not very hard, mind you, and it's a really good book, but I'd say you've heard of him, and Sarah Mussi's "Siege" is one of the best books I've read. Oh! Harry Potter too!
