How to Walk Two Dogs at Once

Walking two dogs at once can be hard, but once you get the hang of it things will become much easier. If you are trying to walk two big dogs at once it can be more challenging but it isn't impossible.
If your dogs don’t walk well together and you have to walk them individually it will end up taking you a long time to properly walk, train and exercise your dogs each day. If you want to know some of the tips and tricks we show our clients, make sure to watch the whole video.

We highly recommend walking each of your dogs on the same side. Our typical order goes from biggest on the inside to smallest on the outside. Once these positions are determined, no switching positions is allowed. There are a few benefits of walking your dogs on the same side. The first reason is that it keeps your hands free for keys, shaking hands, or even your phone. The other reason is it allows you to have more control when it comes to passing dogs, people, and other wildlife.
How to hold the leash can be tricky. We want to make sure we are giving each dog individual tugs when needed. As you can see with our hand placement here, we have one leash held in our hands, while the other is being grabbed by a few of our fingers. Do whatever makes you comfortable, but we want to make sure that each dog is being heeled independently of the other.
We love to work on right and left hand turns to gain our dog's focus. Right and left hand turns have a ton of benefits, but mainly they are used to make sure our dogs are heeling and are paying attention to us. When we do these turns, it is important that they are not swapping places.
From here you can work in obedience on your walks. The idea here is that they listen the first time, stay in the heel position, and overall are doing this somewhat synchronized. When the walk is going well and you want them to sniff and go to the bathroom, you can use the free command and let them be dogs!

What is your opinion about walking two dogs but tethered to one leash? Or is better to stay separated. Thanks.

I prefer the two leashes because it allows you to control each dog independently. If your dogs walk great and don't need much guidance the one leash/splitter method can work though.

The puppy is always trying to ‘play’ with the other & dominant the walk. Do you think I should wait and till he’s out of the puppy stage before walking together? I appreciate your videos and help. Hey! As long as they are friendly with each other I think you are fine to start trying this whenever. It might be a little hard at first, but it’s worth it to be able to walk both at once!!!
