Thanks Eric! I'm glad I could shed some light on the process. Funny you mention the lift... I'm really looking into a MaxJax setup or a Atlas BP9000. MaxJax would fit as-is. BP9000 would require me to notch the ceiling a few inches to fit the posts. My garage ceilings are slightly lower than 9'.

When I did my walnut blast of my intakes I used the small spatula style picks from Harbor Freight to scrap with. The build up was gummy and scarping first is quicker than just blasting until it is all clean. Also there are small ports on the top of the intake ports that go up to the valves or valve cover. I had walnut media in my valve cover that I had to blow and rinsed out. There are tubes in the top of the valve cover that appear to route to the PCV. No one ever says anything about them but they need to be covered some way.
@jake_spence5 жыл бұрын
Good to know about those little ports. I didn't think any walnut shell media would go up into there, but it's definitely possible. I also used a scraping tool to loosen up the carbon before blasting. Works great.

This video confirms that the catch can on this car did not prevent build up...am I wrong in assuming aftermarket catch cans are installed to keep the intake valves clean?
@jake_spence5 жыл бұрын
Not pointless, because it does catch oil. But it is not a 100% prevention method. The BMS catch can that is installed in the car is for the high side (boost) PCV system. It will catch vapors when you are in boost, but does not function when just driving normally around town. You can install another catch can on the low side to capture vapors during both vacuum and boost. This would be much better at keeping the valves clean. BMS offers the second catch can setup, that way you can run dual catch cans. I plan to do this in the future.
@TheFrenchPug5 жыл бұрын
I have one installed and it fills up way more than that every 10k miles. I installed mine after my first intake blast at 60k. At 130k miles now and idle is still perfect. But, I do want to investigate.
@bulkhogan55 жыл бұрын
@@jake_spence This is correct. If you look inside of ports 3 and 4, there are two runners that also vent crank gas back into the intake ports. For the future, that black electrical box under the throttle body is easy to get out with a few 90 degree picks, contrary to popular opinion.
@lynxstarautomotive2084 жыл бұрын
They are designed to catch your hard earned money. They are useless, and only clutter up your engine bay, and introduce new potential failure points. Turbo engines will always have oil in the intake tracts. It is the nature of the design. I’ve been working on these cars for over 15 years. Never seen a catch can do anything useful. Folks just feel good when they open up that little can and see it full of oil. It’s a placebo effect. Just unplug a charge pipe, and drain that! Same effect, because I assure you, that oil is still making it inside the engine. But hey it’s not my money, so to each their own.
@ogfromutube96494 жыл бұрын
Not necessarily true. My charge pipes,intercooler, and intake manifold/valves are squeaky clean with mishimoto baffled can amd snow performance wmi. But i have port injection. Utilized stock pcv box with larger 1/2 tubing to catch can then routed back to fresh air pipe. Fresh air pipe has a ptc heated element to keep any leftovers vapors liquified.

I have an e50 tuned 2016 Ford F150 2.7 Ecoboost (15-17 dont have the additional port injectors like 2018 up) that I bought new in 2016 and now has 193,xxx miles. I ran an endoscope down and looked at my valves, they looked pretty bad. Going to do the walnut method, not looking forward to it as it will be far more difficult because you can't get to them standing on the ground and the ports are way down in the center of the engine. But with the mods I have it's obvious that the 9 second 40-100 is not quite what it should be and the carbon covered intake valves plus the likely clogged 193,xxx mile cats are likely choking it down. I will also be installing my new CVF CATTED DOWNPIPE. Looking forward to the results. Thanks for the video, well done.

Any idea how strong of a compressor I need to buy, I’m getting one this weekend at harbor freight, the blaster kit at harbor freight says min air requirement 3.5 cfm @ 50 psi but I’m a total newbie to compressors, i read from the other comments that others had issues at higher psi etc etc I’m working on it this weekend hopefully I can get some responses from experienced people in the n54 community like yourself. The instructions in the blaster say “adjust the air compressors output regulator so that the air output is enough to properly power the tool, but the output will not exceed the tools maximum air pressure of 120psi at any time. Adjust the pressure gradually, while checking the air output gauge to set to the right pressure range.” But what is the “right pressure range”?? Under general instructions it says 50-120 psi which is a pretty big difference. Which leads me to my original question how powerful of a compressor do I really need? I’m trying not to buy a huge tank if I don’t need to since 1. It costs more and 2. It takes up more space in the garage.

I'd definitely recommend a larger compressor that has a lot of pressure. With a small tank, it'll be constantly running and refilling. With minimal pressure, you'll spend forever blasting the valves. I'd use as much pressure as you can. Good luck!

So the state of your intakes means the oil catch can is 100% pointless then?
@jake_spence5 жыл бұрын

I wonder at what point the catch can was installed.

Yeah, I was wondering about that too. It might be in my records I got with the car, but I doubt it. Either way, this catch can only catches vapors in boost. Doing regular driving, it's ineffective. You need two catch cans to prevent buildup, one on the high side and one on the low side.

Hi, what weight of walnut shell should I bring?

Love the video, you just gained a subscriber, thanks for posting it. It's definitely going to be helpful as I need to do it on my 09 135i currently at 98k. I had to replace my starter motor recently so I was able to peek at my carbon buildup. It's a little worse than your 1'er at 90k so I'm definitely excited to get this done myself. Does the air compressor have to be 175psi? I currently have a 20gal 125psi Central Pneumatic Oil-Lubed compressor and was wondering if I need to replace it for a 175psi one, although I'm hoping I wouldn't have to. Keep those awesome DIY videos coming!

Welcome aboard! The more pressure your compressor has, the more powerful the blaster kit will be. I'm sure you'll be able to do it with your current compressor, but might just take a little more effort. I hope that makes sense.

I loved watching your fix for sluggish valves, however, your EGR was the cause for the problem in the first place. I would love to see your fix for the root cause.

How would you go about fixing this the EGR?

Use some good full synthetic oil and fuel it up with premium Gas only,this will also prevent the Carbon build up. I heard that the N55 doesnt have that much problems with intake valves ?
@jake_spence5 жыл бұрын
Since it's direct injection, it will always suffer from build up. There is no gas passing through the intake valves to help clean them. But good oil and gas will always be better than crappy stuff! Yes, the N55 has a better PCV system than the N54 so there is less buildup.

Did you have any misfires? I’m getting a random misfire on cyl 5

It might be a capacitor on the DME depending on your model year. Also could be coil pack,spark plug,or leaking fuel injector(mine was a Injector)
