How to Wash Cloth Diapers | My Simple Natural Cloth Diaper Cleaning Routine

I'm sharing my nine plus years experience on how to wash cloth diapers in an all natural way. It's a relatively straightforward process and not as gross as you might think! I also share my simple DIY cloth diaper detergent recipe.

I have over nine years experience of cloth diapering under my belt, so I may not wash the in the official way, but I know what works for me.
And, let me tell you guys, its NOT complicated.
I must point out that I am the furthest thing from a germaphobe, and not easily grossed out. My cloth diaper cleaning routine is, therefore, pretty laid back. My son is rash free, and comfortable, so I would say its an a-ok approach!

How to Wash Cloth Diapers
Remove Solids- If the diaper is soiled, hold it by one end and swish it around in a clean toilet to remove solids. If the baby is exclusively breastfed, you can skip this step.
Remove the inserts If you are using pocket diapers- This is another one of the many reasons I prefer the diaper cover setup. So much less gross! You just throw it in, no need to separate.
Store the inserts and covers until washing- I like to use a stainless steel trash can with a removable insert and a lid for this. It can hold a high quantity, is easy to clean and contains the smell.
Run the diapers through a cold cycle- I prefer to wash my cloth diapers twice to eliminate stains and odor. For the cold cycle, I use a small amount of liquid homemade detergent, or a free and clear option.
Wash the diapers on hot- After using a cold cycle to remove stains, I run the washer one more time on hot to give the diapers a deep clean. I usually add a little dry detergent at this point. The key is to always use a very small amount of detergent. If you use too much , it will build up on the diapers and you will have to strip them. (See below.)
Dry the diapers- I am a super lazy cloth diaper-er and just throw them all straight in the dryer. To extend the life of the diapers, line drying is best. With that being said, my current diaper stash is on the third kid and still going strong.
Strip the diapers, if necessary- If they are still stinky when you're done washing them, and they seem less absorbent, its time to strip! See my explanation on the how to below.
Store the diapers- Due to my non-type A laid-backness, I do not fold my diapers. They go straight from the dryer and into my cloth diapering basket, all in a heap. Its so easy, my kids can put them away. I used to fold them nicely, but that was just one more thing that had to go the more kids I had. Turns out its totally unnecessary. Its the same reason I don't fold the baby's clothes either. I just throw them straight in the drawer.

Interesting to say the least, I am a great grandmother of five with another on the way . I want to teach my grand daughter who is about to have the youngest of our family clan about cloth diapers. How ever I did not own a washer when my first or even my second child was born so had to use a scrub board to get them clean -and yes i used drift baby soap . after scrubbing the tar out of them( so to speak ) , I hung them on a clothes line in the sun ( could not afford a drier ) . the sun bleach them nicely even in winter . Though I did bring them in the house frozen lol , and then laid them on a wooden rack to finish drying . And I did fold them up nice and neat while the babies were sleeping after I washed the dishes by hand ( yes I was a stay at home mother ) Guess you ladies life is a lot easier now with the washer , driers ,dish washer ect.. guess we did do it the hard way -though it did build up our arm muscles and made our back stronger. Yes dear ,I am way old school . Even had glass milk jugs back in my day. :)

Thanks for this video! Cloth diapering really doesn't have to be complicated at all. I have a similar routine when I'm cloth diapering. I also leave the clean diapers in the basket and use them from there. I have enough laundry to fold, lol! In the past I had a lot of problems with leaking and stinking specifically with pocket diapers and microfiber. I was too lazy to lay them out in the sun and used bleach too frequently instead. My natural fibers (especially bamboo) broke down too quickly. This time I'm going to use a lot more sun! It's been a few years for me, and I'm having another this fall, so I'm watching these videos as a reminder.

I'm a grandma now but in the 70s and 80s I still used cloth diapers even as the 80s began the hard sell on disposables. Disposables were WAY too expensive back then to use everyday. You saved them for special occasions when you were out of town visiting grandma and didn't want to haul around soiled diapers all day. You are spot on for the technique. I presoaked in the pail with water and borax or a small amount of detergent, poured the whole pail water and all in the top loader, ran the spin cycle to drain everything then did a two wash cycle wash like you do. The only time I used disposable diapers was with my last baby and only if we were going to be out of the house literally all day visiting people and stores where carrying around a ziplock style vinyl bag with soiled diapers in my fresh clean diaper bag would be a stinky drudge on an already challenging day. Or occasionally if we were at all day family get togethers. same reason. where to store soiled diapers without grossing everybody out.

We have a front load washer and I put the dirties in a wet bag. When it's time to wash I unzip the top of the wet bag and put it in the washer. The first cold wash removes the nappies from the bag so you don't need to touch them 😊

I always soaked the soiled diapers (and used the same toilet technique for poop) in a diaper pail and poured the whole thing in the washer and ran it through a spin cycle to drain. I used the pre folded diapers, pins and plastic pants. I loved using cloth diapers so much. My girls never had a problem with diaper rash.

Love this video. I use a stainless steel garbage can too. I actually keep it in my garage and still use a large wet bag inside. I don’t have to clean the plastic insert. I also use a small ‘travel’ wet bag during the day that I keep in the bathroom. When it’s full I put it in the garage with the rest of them. No diaper smell in my house. Disposable diapers (when needed) go in a container on my deck outside. Friends and family with kids in diapers know to throw the diapers outside on the deck. I use tide free and clear! Definitely want to dry your dry detergent. Thanks for sharing. Ps. LOVE your top!!! It looks very good on you.

When my son was little..he had an accident in his pants and tried to clean them himself..which I did the same way you do with holding the pants in your hand and flushing. The thing with homemade laundry soap is that bar soap is not designed for modern washing machines. It's great for handwashing though! Soap causes build up (like soap scum in your shower) especially on multilayers of fabric. It can also build up in your washing machine and cause it to break. I use to make my own laundry soap before I had kids and I believe it is what caused my brand new whirlpool washer to die. It was only 5 years old. I have noticed that people have more issues with homemade laundry soap if they have hard water as well. Hard water can be tricky because of all the minerals that can redeposit in fabrics which also causes a build up that can trap bacteria when washing human waste which leads to dingy colored clothes, smells, and things just not coming clean. You don't want to do too many extra rinses if you have hard water as well because it will just keep redepositing minerals unless you add a water softener. With a good detergent you won't have this issue and there would be no need to "strip". There are detergents out now that are more eco/green/natural that also work really well with cloth diapers. As for zinc oxide, as long as it's not a glob being used for a diaper rash while still in cloth, using a zinc oxide cream is fine. It may cause some staining, but it shouldn't cause build up. It's the petroleum in most diaper creams that cause build up on diapers (like desitin). It's great that you have been using your soap without any issues, I just wanted to add this info just in case others have issues and can't figure out why. It sounds like you don't have hard water. I don't either and never noticed problems with homemade laundry soap until my washer died. I also wanted to add that just because products are advertised for babies (like Dreft) it doesn't mean they have less chemicals. Its typically the same detergent as other mainstream stuff just with a different fragrance to smell more baby like. It's also more expensive because of advertisement.

Hello there! I am a soon to be first time mom and have been looking into cloth diapering. I have been watching your minamilist video and the part one to this and thank you for them! They have been so helpful especially on DIY. I do have a question on how do you handle cloth diapering when out in public. Specifically the process of changing your baby? Where do you store the cloths since you have to wait until you get home to wash? Is their a specific smell proof bag you put them in? If so details on what you use please. And lastly about the bar soap of dr. Castillo, do you order that online? And about the other 2 ingredients you use for the dry detergent you home make is that online too? Good memories! I used cloth diapers with both of mine because they couldn’t wear disposables. My Mama taught me how to fold them with another folded diaper to catch the heavier flows, then the little plastic pants on top...and oh yes, the diaper pins! I rinsed the soiled diapers just like you! Then I put them in a lidded pail with some cold water and a small amount of borax, also my Mama’s way. Then about every other day I did a load. Like you said nursing babies are easy, easy, easy and almost odorless but when that solid food is introduced...🤢 I would pour off the water drop the diapers into hot water wash with Ivory Snow detergent. (Do they still make that?) Then I hung them outside on the clothes line. They smelled so good when I brought them in. (We didn’t have a dryer then.) My Mama told me that the diapers absorbed vitamins from the sun that was good for the baby. I don’t know if that was scientifically valid or not but that’s how I did it. I miss those days, it sounds crazy I know. 😜 I’m glad that moms now have those reusable diapers with these hand sewn inserts...how fantastic! 👶🏼🥰🙌🏻

I really want to make the powder detergent now! I’ve read way too many articles on the internet about how terrible it is to use homemade detergent (I’ve never heard anything about powder, it was always about using homemade liquid detergent)... Also, I’m so so so glad to hear somebody only washing their diapers every 4 days... I’ve always read it can’t go longer than 2-3 days, and my water bill has gone up around $15 because of how often I have to do laundry now 😣 I am SO thrilled that it’s finally warm and sunny in the Midwest so I can finally line-dry my diapers! ☀️ thank you for the advice. Hello! I recently made my own laundry detergent for the first time, following the recipe from you book. I made a powder and liquid detergent. i am having an issue with the clothes smelling kinda moldy and like they haven't been washed even after washing and drying them. Could there be something I'm doing wrong? Do I need to do a powder and liquid detergent for ALL our laundry? I love the idea of the amount of money this could save, but really want our clothes to smell like the nice lavender I added to the detergent instead of mothballs lol :)

Hi, I'm new to your channel but love it already. I'm hoping to get back into cloth nappying again for my 2 girls, but use prefolds instead of flats. Ok, I'll be honest, I'll probably try just folding the flats to the shape of a prefold and sit it in the cover instead of buying all new stuff, but I'm assuming it will work much the same. We have severe drought and water restrictions here in Aus and shouldn't even flush when we use the toilet for wees, so flushing a few times to get the poop out is not really ideal. Any other ideas of how to do it without using so much water? And also, after you've got the poo off, do you wring them out or just put them in the nappy pail completely wet? Is the pail enclosed, or do you do the open dry pail? And lastly, how often would you try to get them washed, every day, every 2nd day? I will have 2 in nappies but always feel so discouraged by the crazy wash routines that everyone says I have to use Thank you :)

The castiel & dr bronners soap can cause repelling and build up especially if you have hard water -- especially on pocket and all in one style diapers. The best recipe ive found for cloth is equal parts oxyclean, super washing soda & borax. (Very similar to rockin green) 2 TBSP per load. Interested with the new baby if youd do an updated routine/favorite diaper review.

What do you do if you're out and about and need to change their diaper? Also do you have any insight if you have to send kids to daycare or to a sitter? I love the idea of cloth diapers but am wondering how manageable it is for someone who is not a stay at home mom. Would love any thoughts you have on this!

I use cloth menstrual pads and my laundry detergent is a mix of equal parts borax and washing soda. I soak them for so long and they always come out super clean! Sometimes i dont even have to scrub with my laundry bar!

This is so encouraging that the routine can be so easy. I will say I am having troubles with stains even though I am also doing just a cold water cycle first. Any thoughts on this? I don’t want to use a stain remover but don’t want yellow stains on every insert. Thanks for any advice!

Laying diapers out in the sun can really help, you can also saturate the stain with lemon juice and let it sit in the sun. Wash afterwards and dry.

I’ve always heard not to use homemade detergent but that’s great that it works for you! I tried a bunch of natural detergents but tide was the only thing that worked for us (which I hate!) but our washer isn’t very good so I think that’s why. But I never had to strip at all. Can we just talk about how amazing your laundry room is?!?!?!?! It’s so dreamy!!!! One day I’m going to have a laundry room like that!!!!

Farmhouse on Boone I've heard this also about homemade detergent for diapers or anything else you wash so I stopped using mine. Body oils and yuck seem to build up and we did notice over time our clothes didn't seem very clean. :-/ I'm glad it seems to work for you though! I’ve also heard to not use homemade. I’ve tried natural detergents and they didn’t work. Had to end up using tide. I think the type of water being hard water etc has a lot to do with it.

The big deal with homemade detergent is this new "fad" or trend in CD is to use a diy detergent of just oxyclean, borax and wash soda. It is all over CD sites and groups. None are really soaps but all boosters and stain fighters therefore you dont actually have clean diapers. Ew! The internet is so hard to navigate and there is SO much information that it is often more confusing than helpful

From my experience, Desitin is petroleum based. Bordeauxs butt paste has always worked well with my diapers and never left a film on my diapers. I'll definitely try your rash cream though, did it cost more or less than the butt paste?

The difference that makes her laundry soap work with diapers is she uses dr. Bronners. A lot of the recipes use things like fels naptha. Dr bronners is fantastic though. It’s not like other soaps. This isn’t a detergent though. It is a soap. Different chemical composition. Also you would need soft water. You could also sub them wet when you need a little more disinfection. I love cloth diapers! I use a flat/wool system and they are so simple.

We have found that plain old corn starch powder does a great job on most diaper rashes.

So I live in a place that gets cold in the winter. The sun hasn’t shined in a while. How would you strip without sun light? We moved into a house where there was hard water and lots of laundry softener used in my machines and washed my diapers there a few times and gave up because my son was wetting through everything consistently. When I started cloth diapering I did the pockets and all in twos with the microfiber inserts and it was a nightmare. I finally simplified (2 kids later) to natural fibers inside a cover and its my favorite method. So much simpler! How many diapers do you have and where do you store the basket that they live in?

It depends on the size of the load, but about a tablespoon should do it. use about half the amount you would for normal clothes. :)
